Main features:

Crusader Kings II: Legacy of Rome review

A much needed expansion for Byzantines. I really like how it fleshes out the Orthodox church and added the ahistorical but fun reconquest of the Rome. Also, it added the retinue system, which allows for non-levy troops. The dlc is highly recommended for anyone who loves playing a Byzantine character in the base game or even others who wanted the added benefit that the retinue system offers.

If you are a fan of the Byzantines then this DLC is a must-grab. The new titles and events add a tremendous amount of flavor to your playthrough, from being able to name people Caesar and Sebastokrator to random events about chariot races, Greek fire, and more. The retinue system is also a great addition, giving you another military choice besides levies and mercenaries. For non-Byzantine players, some of the general features were made available in the general patch, and so this DLC may not be necessary. However, any Byzantine enthusiast will find the $4.99 price tag well worth it.

Alright, so this expansion pack actually only introduces two significant changes: the Byzantine events and the retinues (the rest being included with the patch). That said, these two changes help you immerse yourself in the game and develop the army system respectively. The retinue system isn't perfect - some being too overpowered, others being useless - but fan-made mods such as Better Armies improve the mechanic. Still, it's not like retinues are essential for playing. Worth getting, but not the ultimate DLC some are setting it up as.

An improvement

By theodrixx posted 12th April

Legacy of Rome builds on the solid foundation that is the main game, and improves several aspects that needed attention. The faction system is more nuanced, and the player is able to improve his character beyond using semi-random events and selective breeding. Let's not forget the new ability to create standing armies for those moments when you need a few hundred guys with swords IMMEDIATELY.

Cool depth in the new mechanics, though it won't change the game experience as much as Sword of Islam or Republic do -wait, it's half their price : go for it. Building your own new Latin Empire is some epic playthrough you'll enjoy.

I love getting to play as a Byzantine ruler. The retuine addition is also cool. Getting to play as these new rulers is an awesome thing after you have palyed most of the catholic ones you want to.

New area plus cool options = great addon for the price.

Loved this DLC! I didn't play as a Greek/Byzantine character until this came out and boy am I glad. Got plenty of hours of new and rich game play out of this.

It is a solid small expansion that does not add a ton of new features that were not already in the patch. It does add enough if you want to try to rebuild Rome though.

Even if you don't play the Byzantines, this expansion is pretty interesting because of the retinue addition. Your character can now have a standing army, which really changes the gameplay dynamics. For the price, it's an excellent addition to the game.

A great expansion to another one of Paradox's masterful grand strategy games. It not only adds a fascinating new campaign, where you must restore the Byzantium Empire to it's former glory...or not! But it also adds some significant new additions to the core game such as the overhaul of the combat engine and the addition of factions to the plots and intrigue section. Everything is historically accurate too so you also learn a lot too as well as get the opportunity to rewrite history. Highly recommended.

The addition of empires to crusader kings helps to manage a large empire. Many of the empires have restrictions on the culture of the founder so make sure you know what each restriction is before attempting to found an empire.

Great DLC...adds a bit more content for Byzantium. You can re-create the Roman Empire and some fun stuff like blinding people.

great fun!

Great DLC being able to unite Christendom, and recreate the Roman Empire are great decisions as well as plenty of flavor event for the Byzantines makes for a funner time while playing the Greeks, and the addition of retinues is a must.

Crusader Kings II: Legacy of Rome review

By praetorimperator posted 24th December 2012

When Crusader Kings II first came out, the Byzantines had no flavour, they were plain. When you play them, it felt like playing one of the Catholic dynasties. This DLC adds whole new flavours and mechanics so that the next time you play the Eastern Roman Empire, you won't get bored as quickly. Also, they added new things like the retinue system which provides a better way to build an army as compared to the levy system. Another mechanic added was the faction system which made peacetimes more interesting. However, nothing is perfect. There are few problems and bugs here and there and sometimes the factions can get very infuriating. But otherwise, this is a fine DLC for a few fun games of playing the Byzantine.

If you ever plan on playing in the Byzantine Empire this is a must have it add a lot of depth and makes it feel more like playing the declining empire trying to retake lost ground.

Great DLC. Makes rebuilding the Roman empire a possibilty. Not to mention the retinue system which will make warfare easier to manage with standing armies. Beware though, the byzantines get a real kick with this.

More goodness for an already absolutely great game

By nachinus posted 10th December 2012

Everything that adds to CK2's greatness is worth buying, and this expansion achieves just that. The new features included are interesting, specially the factions system, that adds a new level to political struggles. Playing the Byzantines is a refreshing change, and a new reason to start a new game exploring new challenges in a not so commonly played region. Crusader Kings 2 is the best Paradox Game ever, and its getting even better with each expansion.

A great DLC for what it offers, which is a compelling byzantine ruleset and retinues, which really change up how the game plays from vanilla. Well worth the money

I love this add on pack. It adds some nice features and in-game situations specific for the Byzantines. It has the cool retinues which make game play more interesting. Cataphracts are nice to use against armies. New starting times and situations change up game play.

This DLC adds a great deal of depth to playing the Byzantines. With added options to mend the Schism of Christianity and reform the Roman Empire, players have clear goals that they can direct the might of Constantinople towards. If you own CK2 and are finding that the Eastern part of the map needs some tuning, Legacy of Rome is a must buy.

This dlc adds a few fixes here and there, but it does a lot to help with the Byzantine Empire. Just this dlc alone will make you want to give the Byzantines a couple of run-throughs.

A fun DLC that adds gameplay changes to Byzantine Empire rulers and non-Byzantine rulers alike. It adds more depth to Orthodox rulers and provides goals to end the schism. Flesh out your CK2 experience by picking up this reasonably priced DLC.

Another lovely addition to the CK2 gameplay. Games with Orthodox factions were not really fun in the original game as it lack features comparing to Christians factions and the enhanced Muslim factions. Now there are more reasons to play as Orthodox factions. More importantly, Byzantium is a really popular faction.

Another good DLC for Crusader Kings II.

This is focused around the Holy Roman Empire(Byzantine Empire). You can try and reunite the hole Holy Rome Empire. The DLC also adds a religious system for the orthodox christans.

Overall if you want to play an orthodox leader their is no way around this DLC.

This is a good start to fixing what's always been a rather mediocre portion of Paradox's Games - The lack of options for people who choose to play Eastern Orthodox Christians. Unfortunately, it's only that - a start. There's some general bug fixes, though, and the new faction system alone makes it worth a playthrough.

Excellent, insanely cheap for what it is. Lots of really good additions that add detail.

Certain annoying aspects of the game have been far reduced (while retinues might be slightly unrealistic, not being able to steamroll minor places as a massive empire because you can't declare war with raised levies is unrealistic too and this fixes this).

Definitely worth it. Lots of awesome new features, and don't forget... even if you don't like LOR that much and just like the 1.07 patch, then buy LOR. It's what paid for it.

Legacy of Rome is yet another bit of DLC that perhaps ought to have been a free update, but alas, times have changed: it still adds some good value to the Byzantine Empire, turning it into a treacherous political landscape. Overall, solid addition to the content, even if it is a blatant money-grab ...at least of the the CK II DLC is relatively cheap-ish sort of.

Couldn't see my self playing this game ever again without the retinue mechanic. It really adds a truly novel strategic factor to battles and army composition. Moreover, your vassals and enemies will have them too. If you have a large retinue, that is 20k or more, and they get wiped out in one battle, prepare to have your whole treasury wiped clean if you try to reinforce them as quickly as possible. Awesome addition. Well worth the 5 bucks.

At last, Byzantium given their unique status

By Lioneat555 posted 16th October 2012

Byzantium wasn't like other kingdoms, it was the remnants of the Roman Empire. Now finally Byzantium isn't treated the same as other kingdoms and given some truly accurate and brilliant unique features. So happy, Byzantines are best!

Another cheap and well made DLC offered to us by Paradox Interactive. This one give us the ability to reform the great Roman Empire as the Byzantine through a series of conquest and events. The amazing thing is that it even permit you to play multiplayer with you friends that doesn't want to buy this DLC, giving no reason not to buy it if you're as fascinated with Rome as I am. For such a low price, buy it.
