Tropico 4 Junta Military DLC review

A solid DLC for Tropico 4. The bunker can be very useful when you need a bigger army but dont want so many generals. It allows you to recruit soldiers that do not need a general to look after them. The decorations here are also top-notch if you want to make your island look like a military stronghold. DLC is compatible with Tropico 4 brought from other locations (Eg- Retail, amazon, gamestop) EXCEPT FOR STEAM

Tropico 4 Junta Military DLC review

First of all, be aware that this is *not* compatible with the Steam version of Tropico 4. Kalypso were kind enough to issue me with a Steam key once I had shown them proof of purchase, however.

The Junta DLC is as flawed as any DLC. It costs a lot of money and adds very little substance. For just under £4 you get a new building and a new mission to play. The extra building is not actually very useful, since it provides 6 soldiers without the need for generals. The trouble is, your Tropican army needs to have a good ratio of generals to soldiers or the risk of Coup is increased, so the Bunkers can actually make the campaign *harder*. Guard Posts therefore are still the best option, since in order for them to unlock you have to have enough generals.

The extra mission is very short and quite difficult. Resources are scarce on the island and you more or less just have a single plateau upon which to build all your military buildings. The trouble is, this plateau has a high "beauty" rating and building on it lowers your reputation with the Environmentalists faction substantially.

Additionally, the extra character trait is not very useful either, since there are already traits and a 'rise to power' that provide more or less the exact same bonuses.

That said, given how quickly you can chew through the campaign, it's worth getting the DLC if for that extra mission, along with some of the other DLCs. But you're gonna want to wait for a sale, because this sure as hell ain't worth £3.50.

It was actually an interesting add on. It helps to have the added military units without having to have as many generals. If you're going to buy it though, i would wait for a sale.

Tropico 4 Junta Military DLC review

A welcome addition for anyone who wanted their Tropico islands to look just that little bit more militarized. Personally, I always wanted something like this for Tropico 3 (and 4), and felt that for a game set in the Cold War, the lack military buildings and equipment was an obvious hole. Perhaps these should have been included in the main, then.

The new map is certainly interesting, if very challenging, and the new building and decorative items are fitting for the Tropico setting. For £3.50, though, it's debatable whether the pack is worth it. Really, it depends on whether expanding the army's features is something that appeals to you. If not, you can do without this pack. Personally, I think it was worth the purchase.

Tropico 4 Junta Military DLC review

Junta Military brings a few new military-themed items and a trait to Tropico 4, but mostly it's about the new building and map. The bunker is a great way of more affordably expanding your army and having a more realistic general to soldier ratio than Tropico 4 typically insists upon.

The map is where most of the value is though and it's extremely challenging, with most of your usual life lines either cut off or severely restricted. It's clearly aimed at people who have already completed the main campaign.

It's up to the usual standard, but it's only one map; and one new building. That does make its £3.50 usual £3.50 asking price seem quite steep. Sure, you can use the trait, decorative items and bunker on other maps. But ultimately this is one of those 'wait for a sale' things.
