Tropico 4

Rating: 4.5 (397 votes cast)

The world is changing and Tropico is moving with the times - geographical powers rise and fall and the world market is dominated by new players with new demands and offers - and you, as El Presidente, face a whole new set of challenges. If you are to triumph over your naysayers you will need to gain as much support from your people as possible. Your decisions will shape the future of your nation, and more importantly, the size of your off-shore bank account.

Tropico 4 expands on the gameplay of the previous game with new political additions ∼ including more superpowers to negotiate with, along with the ability to elect ministers into power to help get your more controversial policies passed. But remember to keep your friends close and your enemies closer as everyone has an agenda! Your political mettle will be thoroughly tested, as new natural disasters will have the populace clamoring for you and your cabinet to help them recover from some of the worst Mother Nature can dish out.

Tropico 4 also brings a new level of social interaction with the addition of Facebook and Twitter integration. Post comments on Twitter direct from the game and have updates go out when you complete missions or unlock new achievements. You can even take screenshots of your burgeoning island and post your dream creation on your Tropico 4 Facebook page and compare your interactive Dictator Ranking on the online leaderboards.

Key Features:

  • New campaign consisting of 20 missions on 10 new maps.
  • 20 new buildings including Stock Exchange, Shopping mall, Aqua Park and a Mausoleum to El Presidente.
  • Six new interactive disasters including volcanoes, droughts and tornadoes.
  • Council of Ministers – selected citizens to mimisterial posts in the government to help push through your more controversial decisions.
  • National Agenda – receive objectives from Tropican factions, foreign geopolitical powers or opportunities relating to current island events such as ongoing disasters.
  • Facebook and Twitter integration.
  • Screenshot gallery – take screenshots of your tropical paradise and share on your Facebook page.

Once you release population limits via a hack the game is very good.

Exactly the same as Tropico 3, minus the bugs and added a few minor changes.

Population happiness is much easier in this version then previous versions, making the military much less important.

As it was said before. The game is not bad, but is something like a Tropico 3.5 capped on graphics and at interface. Somethings even annoying like no more many buildings build at sequence and no more links to people at Almanac pages. The appearence is uglyer than T 3, but the economic model appears to be better, at least no more cronic deficit. Just for collectors or people do not have the T 3 (and with the thanksgiving the game is just $8, so it worths)

This game is not only a fun simulation, it's also hilariously clever. The campaign mode is surprisingly entertaining and will provide dozens of hours of entertainment on your journey from 3rd world country to world super power. Some of the maps are recycled unfortunately, but there are always new and unique ways to make your income which gives this game plenty of replay value. Leonard says this is definitely a buy!

One thing that Tropico 4 has, that many games are missing, is an effective and fun tutorial. So if you're new to the genre, don't fear a major learning curve -- though gameplay improves with thoughtful strategy. I'm not generally a Sim player and more into the likes of grand/historical strategy -- and some economic strategy games like Anno 1404 -- and still the game keeps me entertained.

I play Tropico 4 when I don't want to have to think too hard but yet do more than mindless button mashing. The humor, natural disasters and thoughtful challenges are also a delight and keep the game from being stale.

I give it 5 stars as I can't find anything to really ding the game on and it shines in its own right across the board (aesthetically, technical and gameplay) as far as quality. And today, with games releasing for $59 and up, the price is welcome and really delivers the entertainment for much less... especially when on sale.

Tropico 3 fans should be thrilled as well -- to have an improved version, offering many more hours of entertainment while retaining much of its predecessor's attributes.

Tropico 4 -

Tropico 4 is a very good game, but not too far apart from Tropico 3. The changes made from 3 two 4 seem little at first but make significant differences. Few changes as for example the ministry with the ministers you have to employ. The missions various fractions or countries offer you mix up the routine of dictatoring.

If you already own Tropico 3 - get Tropico 4 at a discount

If you don't have Tropico 3 - get Tropico 4

It is the best of the Tropico series. Great graphics, funny and fun. I'd reccomend it to anyone. It's a great moe from 1 to this edition. I'd encourage anyone to play it who likes the series or who likes the combination of humor and strategy.

This is an awesome Sim / strategy Title. It is all that tropico 4 was and a bit more. Basically it plays the exact same. I mean exact. The added things are more cartoony advisers and additional factions to befriend or piss off. I liked it just a bit more than 3. If you're contemplating getting this title. Its worth it.

Never change a winning team, that's Tropico's motto. There is simply nothing new except for a building here and there. Still a great game, but if you already own part 1 or 3, don't bother buying it.

Tropico 3 with a multitude of minor improvements

By tony595 posted 2nd April 2012

As many others have said if you liked Tropico 3 you will like this. There are many interface improvements such as the building menu being divided into categories. There are also a lot of new building improvements that increase your options.

The random missions that pop up everywhere help to keep you busy and provide another source of income for your city as well as your swiss bank account.

A minor aesthetic improvement that I really appreciated was that roads outside of the center of your city aren't paved anymore.

Great Game

I love this game! You won't stop playing it, it's the best of the series. It's very similar to Tropico 3, it didn't change much, it's the same idea but with better graphics. If you are a fun buy it and if you aren't buy it to! :D

El présidente is back to roll cigarillos !

Even if the game is very similar to the previous opus, the changes are welcome especially for the UI which is clearer and the additions of factions missions giving more interest to the game. If you are new to Tropico, this one is definitely the one to begin with !

An entertaining and humerous look at "god-games." The story line is quite involved and you get a fair bit out of it before you ever want to go hunting for sand-box opportunities. The only critique I've seen is from Tropico 3 players not thinking that much was updated in 4. I, having not played the game until 4, don't have this complaint and can see the reason for the rabid fan-base around this game.

Excellent, well-made game.

I personally love the entire Tropico series, call me biased, but Tropico 4 is a fantastic addition. While it almost seems to be an expansion, it comes with a clever and continuous campaign and many features that I think everyone wanted in Tropico 3. Possibly the best city builder I know of.

Seems sad that this is even necessary, but I love that the developers released the original game with almost no bugs, and solved any perceived 'bugs' (I didn't notice a single one) in a matter of days. It's almost hard to come by a developer that not only releases a high-quality, entertaining game, but also backs it up, but Kalypso delivers!

It's not difficult to play and win, but it's not difficult to overlook something and spiral yourself out of power. Everything that went into it makes it extraordinarily entertaining and a vital addition to any city-builder's library.

This is Tropico 3 on STEROIDS!

There are so many fixes, additions to gameplay, increased political intrigue and the economy that it had to be a next iteration of the Tropico franchise and not just an add on.

FINALLY we are able to see visually that the docks and industries have loads, something that was sorely missed in T3, included in T1 and T2, but certainly improved and increased in T4.

The graphics engine has been optimized to run smoothly, even with a large population.

New tourist venues and businesses and additional options to the old buildings truly does make for a much greater experience than T3 (I even deleted T3 because T4 is like T3, but with nearly everything you wanted in T3.

Tropico is by far one of the best city building games going right now, though you'll never have a thriving metropolis ala SimCity, but the 1500 max population you DO have will keep you plenty busy because these Tropicans are born, grow up, go to school, high school, college, get jobs, change jobs, get old, retire and die - a complete life cycle for the entire population.

Your decisions can cause them to become criminals, rebels or soldiers...this SimCity's metropolis cannot do.

What T4 does - it does right. I really like the new DISASTER RECOVERY SYSTEM, as any destroyed buildings are flagged and all you have to do is click REBUILD - GENIUS!

If Tropico 3 was absolutely perfect for you then Tropico 4 will be the best game ever!

However, if you thought Tropico 3 had flaws that needed to be addressed, Tropico 4 will only be fun for about a day.

It's got larger islands, but a cap on population/tourists and roads/intersections that makes a Sim City type playstyle impossible. No major updates versus T3, just better looks and a few new buildings. They even forgot to add the Bunker, Cement Factory, and Plantation to the build menu so you have to set hotkeys for them to build them.

All in all, this would've got a 4 star rating as an expansion for tropico 3, but as a new game with all the same old features its hardly worth the 3 stars I gave it. 2.25 would be more fitting. The real kicker is that if you have a grievance, such as the buildings not being in the build menu, and decide to contact Kalypso through the forums, they just delete your post.

I definitely don't recommend this purchase unless Tropico 3 was your cup of tea without exception.

If you liked Tropico 3 You will love this while it does not bring much on the graphic table it does bring some interesting features such as Ministers more buildings more stories from the tropican citizens alwell as the EU china middle east missions now come up over the buildings related as a "?" and can be picked without being forced to either decline or accept em so if you like Tropico 3 you will love this not much more for me to say since i'm busy playing this ;) 5/5 !

Tropico 4 review

Tropico 4 left off from where Tropico 3 ended, the games are very similar so if you liked Tropico 3 you will defiantly like Tropico 4. Tropico 4 give you a new lay out for the HUD, for the menus construction, edicts, and so on. Also have improved graphics, some new buildings like the fire station and a parliament building where you can elect minsters. Also has new overseas Faction where you can deal with China, the EU and the Middle East. Each Faction now can give you objective to do for more money or more respect, also each faction can offer you contract to operate their buildings on your island and the pay rent to you, like the USA / USSR do with the army bases. Another new feature which I quite like is the ability now not only to export but to import to. A word of warning you should look out for your imports because I found that I got in to debt really quickly because I allowed unlimited imports. Another really cool feature for Tropico 4 is to upload pictures straight to your titter site or facebook. For this game I would rate it a 8/10 purely because for me some parts the game are the same as number 3 but the new features and improve graphics make it a worthwhile purchase. I hope you find this review help full

Let`s be honest here. Tropico 3 was a fun game and a worthy sucessor to Tropico and Paradise Island.

Now let`s also be honest here. If you liked Tropico 3 and wanted more of the same you`ll find that in Tropico 4. If you didn`t like it or just had enough of it then Tropico 4 is not for you. It is pretty much the same game and no doubt there will be a lot of crying everywhere about how it should be an expansion pack and not a new number in the series. That said Tropico 4 is solid, polished and with a number of cool new features, which might not be enough for anyone that was fed up with T3 to actually like it.

The graphics are the same, the meshes and textures haven`t changed much. There are many additions to the game though, most of them nice little tweaks and features that give this title a bit more character then T3.

In the end though it is simple, if you look at T4 and want to find a different game from T3 you`ll be disapointed. If you loved T3 and want more of the same, then T4 is for you.
