Ship Simulator Extremes review

This is pretty good ship simulator. Take note, when i mentioned simulation, it meant the game truly simulate the handling part of the ship. Inertia, momentum, weight physics play a major part. The graphic is good although some textures look unpolished. The sound effect is excellent as you expect from a simulation genre.

Upon firing up the game you can choose to play multiple modes including single missions, campaigns, free roam, or multiplayer. In free roam you can choose any port area or open ocean location, choose a type of ship, set the weather and just go out exploring on your own. The single mission folder, oddly enough, is empty. That’s right — there are no single missions with the game even though that is one of the choices. The three campaign selections are full of individual missions that are somewhat linked together to give a feeling of a continuous job path, but calling it a campaign is a bit of a stretch.

An excellent ship sim, by far the best yet, with a great range of vessels, environments, and missions. The real problem with this game, as mentioned by other reviewers, is its lack of optimization, and lack of multi-core support. I've got an Nvidia GT630 and a quad core i5 2450 processor. Can't even get 15fps on minimal settings. Yet can run Skyrim on all high settings, with the texture enhancers. If you don't have a supercomputer, you won't be able to run this.

Game is not optimized very well (even with latest patch) so you will need high-end PC to run it on max graphics.

The game itself is ok. It has lot's of ships to play(Tankers,LNG,fast ferry, passenger ...) and you have a great career mode!

Multiplayer is nice especially if you meet some people and sail together. Nowadays you can download lot of custom missions (created by other players) which is really a great think like in Ship Simulator 2008!!

The graphics are very good and the ships are presented well. It’s nothing amazing but it really does a good job for the simulation. The game uses Physx, but unfortunately doesn’t have a very detailed damage model. Still – for the most part it behaves as you would expect. The audio is functional but not fantastic. The radio chatter is a lovely touch but it would have been nice to have more variety and slightly clearer chatter. The same goes for sound effects, the ones that are there are very good but more variety would have been good. Since you spend a great deal of time looking around, it would be nice for the scenery both visually and in terms of audio to provide more immersion.

Ship Simulator Extremes is not for everyone. You really have to love your ships and marine lifestyle – otherwise you’ll find yourself pretty bored at the helm of a giant supertanker. There’s plenty to do and see but this really is a product aimed at enthusiasts and not at the average gamer. If you are in the market for a ship simulator, this is an extremely solid choice with plenty of elements to keep you occupied. The missions might sound a bit too much like a game to some – but they are actually very well done and pretty challenging. Don’t expect to go racing your ship arcade style to the objective and be finished – you really have to manage everything.

I would only recommend this for the more hardcore ship simulation fans.

Ship Simulator is probably one of my favorite simulator games. The graphics are amazing- especially the water. Ship Simulator Extremes is better than 2008 because the graphics are a little nicer especially inside the cabs. If you love ships or want to pretend to drive one without the fear of drowning this game is for you! The cities/docks are more realistic too then in the past. If you don't want to pay the expensive price for the new Ship Sim it would be fine if you went with an earlier version- they are all great.

The same with any simulator- there are always little bugs and not all the graphics are seamless (jaggedy) but its still realistic if you can handle them. The game runs smoothly even on my laptop (windows 7, HP DV6). Might be easier to play if you have a desktop and would highly recommend a mouse if you have a laptop- its pretty much essential.

If you like simulators this one is one to definitely check out!
