Saints Row 2 review

Saints Row 2 is a lot like Grand Theft Auto, it has the same style, it's an open world game occurring in a city which you can explore, do missions and activities in and a lot more crazy stuff just for fun.

Unlike GTA, Saints Row tries to be more funny, crazy and unrealistic so that we can also laugh while playing it.

Although it's a pretty bad port from a console the game is really cool.

My biggest problem is that I couldn't play it on Windows 7 32 bit because then the game runs on a x2 speed, as if you are fast forwarding and that is pretty aweful, especially while driving... I had to play it on a different PC.

Very funny game but the the optimization is poor and sometimes is not works good of fast computers. The story isn't important, the most important is fun. It's one of the best sandbox game in 2008.

Mindless fun game in gta style. Some minuses from bad keyboard control.

Would recommend using mod Gentlemen of the Row with it as it adds more content.

Its a wickedly mindless game... very funny at times with all the quirky voice-acting.

The driving in it is a little "sharp" using the keyboard as most mention... if it wasn't for this I would have given it a 5/5.

A GTA like game with many things to do.

I'm not a really fan of open world style games, but this is just awesome.

I love the developers humor <3

Saints Row 2 is comparable to GTA San Andreas, but I would prefer SR2.

Saints row 2 is simply a more fun, less realistic version of GTA, it's not the complete same, but i implores a more global scale of action. such as taking ground and getting to own territory

Saints Row 2 brings the Saints Row series to the PC and manages to both impress and leave a bad taste in one's mouth. As a game it's great, the missions are varied and the gameplay is genuinely fun and unique. The customization tools provided are great and the story is good.

But as a PC version of a game it fails. Saints Row 2 is so poorly optimized that it doesn't run well on high end PC's nor it will in the future. If you can leave the performance problems aside you will find a true gem.

Excellent replayability. Graphics that surpass GTA: SA but not as good as GTA:IV. Sound is on the weak side - some sounds are really tinny and lack variation. Coop is a blast!

Support, however, is non-existent, though there is a large community of modders and enthusiasts who have thankfully resolved many of the issues. Performance is generally good on a decent modern system (quad core, 4gb ram, Geforce GTX260/HD4870) and I experienced stuttering only on rare ocassions.

A great game that is highly recommended.

The game in terms of gameplay is wonderful. You have a lot of freedom to do whatever you like, running about the city and performing acts of 'respect' that strike your fancy. The online cooperative mode is also a blast.

What isn't so great is the game's technicalities. It has a lot of bugs, including the game running very very fast on most Win7 installations, which requires a custom made patch to fix (the company themselves refuse to do anything about it).

Put in the work to make the game function the way it should and you have an enjoyable experience ahead of you. Otherwise you're destined for an uncalled-for ragequit.

Saints Row 2 is best seen as an over-the-top version of GTA with lots of more freedom and ridiculous things to do. While GTA does take itself seriously, Saints Row 2 doesn't. While you can still be the classy maffialeader if you want to, you can also be a pimp running around in a diving suit. The world is open and it's yours to take, how you want it.

While rather buggy on the PC, this is a great game if you want to have a laugh.

Saints Row 2 review

By Highwayman91 posted 7th Nov 2011

If this game were handled with care then this would easily be a 4 star, maybe 5 (4.5 if that were possible) but the game was released by a third-party developer and was just full of bugs. Some PC's will play this fine, some will cry - this is not because of ''Epic graphix!'' but because of poor optimisation and the afore mentioned bugs. This aside, the game is great. This I can confirm from previously owning it on the Xbox 360. Tonnes of stuff to do and if you're into sandbox games a la Grand Theft Auto then this is it's slightly crazy, over the top and incontinent cousin.

Fun gun. Open world play. Tons of character creation screens. Did not have many issues with play, especially after I added the driving mod (made it so much easier to control). If you like GTA games you will like this.

Saints Row 2 review

By EfayML posted 10th Oct 2011

Can't recommend this enough. It's gleefully tasteless, an enjoyable sandbox playground game which has no wish to take itself seriously. It's been a while since I played a game like this - the last was probably Grand Theft Auto Vice City - but I found endless variety. The current version is well patched, although there are tweaks to be found at the steam forum which will tidy things up more. I would recommend a game controller for this, although I'm currently struggling on with keyboard and mouse. driving isn't essential in the game, but it doesn't play well with keyboard and mouse at all (Helicopters, on the other hand, do just fine.). I've stuck with playing it in windowed mode on my laptop, which has worked out fine on medium setting, and mine isn't the most powerful - ati integrated graphics, 4 gig ram and a dualcore. In summary fun, but do make sure you read up on all the various tweaks required at the steam forum before you start playing.

Saints Row 2 is a very fun game, but also very bugged on the PC since they stopped patching it. It doesn't run all that well, if you have windows 7 the game will run at double speed, and most of the cars can do the most insane turns by a small tap on a button. Most of this can be fixed by mods though, and the wacky car controls are actually making driving down a road a challenge, but the lack of control and the lag is just enough to ruin it. Its only fairly decent, 3 stars

Horrible port!

By Bob Marley posted 27th Aug 2011

This is a cheap Port from Console to Pc..Graphics eat a ton of processing power and deliver not much in quality. On Windows xp new appearing objects are not prefetched, which means while driving the game lags every 2 to 3 seconds.

Add to that the Fact that the car controls are tuned to analog sticks which means cars react very sensitive to even the shortest keypress, which leads to you crashing into lots of objects all the time, especially with faster cars.

The Game Design itself is greatand lots of fun with lots of batshit insane missions, but i can only recommend it to people if:

you have Windows 7 (rumored to counter prefetch issue)

+ a really good cpu/gpu (counters lack of optimization)

and install the fanmade patches for it to get rid of some issues.

you get it really cheap

all else should stick with the console version.

The game is fun, but it has many flaws and after the patch still some bugs. There are issues with controlling the different kind of vehicles and the game has high system requirements in comparison to what it looks. But if you look for some crazy arcade action that takes itself not as serious as a GTA it can be a lot of fun.

Graphically this game aint as up to date as the others that came out the same year but with fully customizable character and free world play (after the first couple of missions) then it becomes engrossing, only downside to this is car handling issues again as always like in the GTA games car handling is awful but thats the only thing that lets it down (or if your a graphic freak then that too)

This game is loads of fun, put its also a terrible console port. If you have a problem with not using your mouse in the menues and get pissed if some of the minigames are impossible with a mouse i cant recommend it, but if you just wanna have some fun with the craziest game, buy this!

So the steam redemption is the heavily censored german language version and the main game is broke without the latest steam patch if you direct download. Horrible PC port, glad i payed os little for it.

Saints Row 2 review

By ion2atom posted 18th Aug 2011

This game really delivers what GTA4 lacks. GTA4 went a completely different direction than San Andreas, even taking out the great flying mechanic they had implemented. SR2 picks up the slack, delivering a huge game packed with fun side missions, less realistic driving mechanics, and huge customization options. A great game, worth the small price.

Imagine Grand Theft Auto's freedom to destroy, and mix in a little wackiness. You can complete quests, or you can destroy random civilians in a way that will have you and everyone in the room laughing. A must have. This game is so good, I already own a retail version of it, but I bought it through Gamersgate just because the price was so low. Now I don't have to worry about losing it.

Saints Row 2, a poor console port

By Caleb367 posted 18th Aug 2011

No one seems to point out a simple yet important detail: every non-Steam version of SR2 is horribly broken, as the last patch was never released outside the Steam network. Not a fault of Gamersgate obviously. Besides, the last patch is needed for Gentlemen of the Row mod, which fixes most of the game-breaking bugs.

The key provided for Steam however does unlock the censored and unmoddable German version.

By bombalur posted 18th Aug 2011

dont redeem this key on steam as you'll get the censored germna version that is locked to the german language.

However the game in your native toungue and not censored is amazing.

BUY IT!!!!

If you want an open-world game, and are frustrated by Grand Theft Auto IV, or even if you enjoyed GTA4, Saints Row 2 is a nice, non-serious change of pace that will constantly put a grin on your face. It’s whacked out, over-the-top, and, most important, reminds you that games should be fun.

Saints Row 2 GTA but more fun!!

By EliteReece95 posted 16th Aug 2011

If you enjoyed the GTA games before they took a more serious approach you'll love this, the game allows you to customise your character to your hearts content from clothes to voice and even how they walk. The game has a fun CO-OP mode for you and a friend to enjoy. Buy this for a funny sandbox experience. A lot of fun!!

saints row 2 is similar to grand thief auto but its not a serious game. the game could

have been great if it was not for the timed missions, horrible car controls, limited

weapons invatory, and hard invatory controls.

Crazy & insane- it grabs you, shakes you and then leaves you wanting more.

The city itself is fairly large with several miles of urban city to explore. The graphics however aren't as optimized as could be and as such it may chug on some systems. Thing is- they don't even look all that great. It IS a console port of a great game. But it suffers from terrible porting. The controls seem wonky at first until you adjust.

Overall good game, I'd recommend if you're willing to stick with it

Saints Row 2 is a action game similar to Grand Theft Auto but that is a where the Similarities end. This game is a complete waste of time because of the terrible controls, terrible story and bad graphics. Buy Grand Theft Auto and not this game. 1/5 stars.

Saints Row 2 review

Saints Row 2 is a stunning game. I've already completed it having bought it on retail. Unfortunately the retail version forces you onto Steam - extremely happy to report that the Gamersgate version lets you play the game normal-style in complete freedom which is how PC games should always be played. Can't praise this game enough - it's been said it's "the game GTA IV should have been" which although I've never played GTA IV was enough, having played this already, to stop me even bothering with GTA IV.

You start off choosing your character - which is an insane affair - you get to choose the looks, right down to colour of eyes, shape of face etc. That's extensive enough, but you ALSO get to pick things like voice, style of taunt, and even the way he or she walks. I even had him dressed in women's underwear in one option screen. I subsequently decided against this in my final decision.

The controls certainly take a bit of getting used to - but once you do, they're almost second nature. I would recommend sticking with the defaults as they've thought them through rather well.

The level of freedom is immense. There are tons of well structured missions to complete, which involve doing missions against 3 rival gangs, until you've wiped them all out. There are special side missions, which count towards your progress through the game as a percentage (and what's interesting to note is that having completed every single gang mission, and had the end credits roll, I'm still not "100%" through the game) or you can just run around causing mass mayhem, which is incredibly stress relieving. You can buy up petrol stations, record shops and such. You can buy up houses for your gang. You can randomly recruit gang members if you see any wandering about the streets, or dismiss them at will (or execute them if you're savage like me). You can take control of just about any vehicle, be it land or air or water based. The 'boss' missions - i.e. the rival gang leaders can be really savage - or you could get lucky on them. Just be prepared for a serious, heart-pumping, adrenylin-filled challenge.

The graphics are beautiful - though you will need a meaty, modern system to run the game at full settings without any judder - though these days it isn't all that expensive to hit the mark (just don't buy a retail PC). There are occasionaly glitches like the soft shadows of the trees turning blocky but that really doesn't detract from the overall look.

The whole island feels alive - there are so many people wandering around, driving around. You end up down the beach and there's people sunbathing on the sand. You go over to a building site and there's people hammering away and lazing about inside. These areas aren't just put there to break up the scenery like in some games. They're actually functioning.

Minute attention to detail, hours and hours of mindless fun and destruction, and truly an adult game for adults, Saints Row 2 is epic, and I for one absolutely cannot wait for the next Saints Row game.

100% totally recommend.

Saints Row 2 is a pretty darn amazing game. Blowing things up, blowing people up, and doing it all in a spectacular fashion that rivals GTA in its aversion to normalcy. Know that you cannot use the GG key on Steam, and GG currently has not updated to the latest version. Still, this game is definitely worth getting, if not from here.

Saints Row 2 review

By Seradest posted 12th Aug 2010

+ Arcadiges, adrenalingeladenes Gameplay

+ Wunderbar direkte Steuerung

+ Gelungene Zwischensequenzen

+ Zahllose, teils absurde Nebenbeschäftigungen

+ Meistens faires Checkpoint-System

+ Guter Mehrspieler-Part

- Schwache Grafik

- Wenig Musik im Radio

- Mittelmäßige KI

- Abwechslungs arme Hauptmissionen

Aber 4 von 5 Sternen wert.
