Omerta City of Gangsters review

A very vanilla version of HBO's Boardwalk Empire, but it does have the potential to be a very good one if patches and DLC's flesh out a very bare bones game. The main flaw is the static nature of the mini crime empire you build, once you get a few buildings up and running you can forget them. The game fails to capture the constant competition of the period between rival gangs and while the story line campaign does have one act of betrayal, your gang is far to loyal to you to really be credible. Hopefully expansions will put real muscle in the game.

Omerta is a good game that could have been so much more. It is comprised by two distinctive game experiences, a simulation (similar to Tropico) of a gangster boss who is trying to raise to power, and a battle mode in which you engage in gruesome engagements with enemies in turns (depending on the characters’ initiative). Both parts of the game are engaging but they are not mind-blowing. The simulation mode is pretty shallow; it is hard to lose if you are taking your time. The battle mode can be very rewarding at times, but so much more it could have been accomplished. The best part of the game is the campaign, in which you follow a story. Sandbox is really just boring, while multiplayer is broken. If you are a fan of Gangster, you probably should think twice before getting it. If you like a very low challenge and slow pace with moderately entertaining battles, it is worth the money.

This is the most modern and probably the best gangster style sim I've ever played. I never really enjoyed Tropico but I would certainly look forward to seeing more sequels DLC etc for this game. Fantastic gamestyle and the combat is fun. Feel the games industry lacks good quality gangster games which besides GTA series needs more of the genre. It especially needs some 20s-40s era gangster games. This game represents the start of some hopefully other great gangster sims. I'd buy all of them if they are on par with this one!

First Impressions

So far I've played through the first 3 missions and it's been a lot of fun. The graphics are very evocative of the genre, the voice acting is humorous and the overall theme hits all the right notes. It bears a strong resemblance to other real-time management games like Tropico but that isn't a bad thing though the "supply chain" is a bit more simplistic.

The Liked/Feared mechanic is interesting and the turn-based combat is a lot of fun. While maybe not as deep as say the latest Jagged Alliance it certainly could have been worse. All in all this is just the sort of game I've been looking for to scratch that gangster sim itch I've been feeling for a very long time. 5 Stars!

Very nice game. I've played the demo and the game. It just got available. I was hoping for something similair as gangster2. It has the same feeling, but is diffrent. The gameplay is good. The tactical shootout is something you have to get a hang of it. I give it 4 stars.
