GAME SUMMARY

Nuclear Dawn

Rating: 4.2 (179 votes cast)

Nuclear Dawn is the first game to offer a full FPS and RTS experience, within a single gameplay model, without crippling or diluting either side of the game.

Play as a soldier in a war-torn post-apocalyptic landscape, modelled on modern cities, and take the fight to your enemies as armoured, assault or stealth infantry, using various weapons, and twelve distinct load-outs to accomplish your objectives. The first person shooter action in Nuclear Dawn is hard, fast and unforgiving, with weapons that rely on skill and tactics more than on twitch reflexes and map memorization.

Then, take Nuclear Dawn above the action, and play as the commander. Organize your fellow players in squads, and assign them to tactical objectives. Plan the resource routes for your army, and production of your structures for forward deployment. Exploit the terrain and resource point locations to block your enemies’ tactical advance, and crush their plans in an iron fist. Research and implement new technology to give your soldiers the edge on the battlefield, and set up forward bases to lead the assault on your enemies, with a full complement of defensive and offensive structures to choose from and upgrade, to build your perfect fortress.

  • Two distinct factions: the Empire and the Consortium
  • Four playable classes, each with three sub-class loadouts, plus the commander role
  • Over a dozen weapons across the various classes, and factions
  • Each faction has a completely separate base-building paradigm, with different workflows and tech trees
  • Upgrade weapons, buildings and classes with powerful Golden Age blueprints
  • Build Doomsday weapons with pre-war technology that will give you the deadliest edge in battle
  • Travel across the largest, most detailed maps built in Source multiplayer to date.

Nuclear Dawn review

Great game that actually requires a proper team play to have a good match.

Problems can occur obviously if commander on either team is below the par of the other, so game goes into completely onesided steamroll, but the game it self is very skill based.

This game is nothing close to your standard run-of-the-mill shooter, due to the reason of importance of team playing, listening to orders from commander & having a good commander, while trying to counter enemy movements.

Playerbase isn't too large, but most of the time (at least during sales) you should find a few servers to play on.

I Had immense fun playing this game, and I'd rate it very highly on my all time top games, but beware, since the game is getting older by the minute, its already small playerbase is diminishing.

Other then that I cannot do anything else then recommend this game.

Great game, shame the player count never got bigger.

Shooter part is great and being a commander can be fun if you take your time learning what to do. Bad commander can ruin the game for everyone and a team not following orders will ruin the game for commander. When everybody works as a team the game really comes together and is a great experience for all involved. Sadly, odds for that to happen aren't so high.

Give the game a chance and play as part of the team!

You know, it's not a bad game, but it's also not a AAA shooter like BF3 or CoD are. The last time I played there were not much players online and if I found a running server it was nearly empty. gameplay is also pretty slow for a FPS Shooter

Nuke on your face!

This game is great, The first person shooter part of it, as far as I have seen, has run beautify! Never had any problems with it. BUT BE WARNED: The commander tutorial, imo, needs to be more in depth. I suggest playing the tutorial, than grouping up with a few friends to learn how to play.

A really great alternative to the Battlefield series.

Warning though: Play this only if you have some friends. Alone it might get boring really fast, due to the important teamworks there's involved in this great strategic first person shooter.

The playerbase is not that big, but its steady, with the "same old faces".

Pretty nice game... for organized players

By JohnSilence posted 20th July 2012

Nuclear Dawn promised a lot from its earliest days in development limbo - Rob Briscoe, the genius behind the Dear Esther remake and some of the finest Mirror's Edge levels, even designed a couple of maps for it. I read all of this great work was washed away at some point, when the original modders left and the game's premise (the FPS-RTS mix) was scooped up by Iceberg Interactive. I don't know for sure how far that's true; but what's there is pretty nice in terms of atmosphere, personality and level design. There's combat at all ranges, interesting map quirks, and the environments don't feel generic.

The big problem you'll encounter on public servers is a sometimes catastrophic sense of imbalance. It's easy for a game to go the way of one of the teams early on, and from that point onwards unfolds a long, unnecessary war of attrition, with the losing commander unable to supply his team with the necessary resources to get out of the spawn they're cornered in, while the other team sets up a network of turrets and other equipment that's basically unassailable. Boring! Like a game of Battlefield 3 with 500% tickets.

I find it an attractive proposition for organized players; the strategic layer adds a unique twist that is a treat when team plans work. I don't know how it compares to Savage or Iron Grip: Warlord, the other two games I know of that mix RTS and FPS - I haven't played them. As it stands, full-price I wouldn't rate Nuclear Dawn more than 3 stars, but it is often on sale; and I believe discovering its inventive formula and hanging out in its unique environments are enough reason to warrant a purchase for a few euros/pounds.

It's an ok game, which gets good when you play it with friends. The idea is certainly cool, but its execution lacks a bit. It leaves a very heavy source mod feel, instead of being an actual standalone game. The weapons have no impact, the controls feel a bit unresponsive and the autobalance is a mess. Graphics-wise ok, but not great. The factions are a bit unbalanced, since one can only transmit power via direct lines while the other just needs to put their transmitters within radius of each other.

Like I said, ok game, but it gets really fun with friends.

Feel RTS/FPS at the same time..

Nuclear Dawn is a very interesting team based game with futuristic elements

graphics are good but still could get more polished

game approach is easy to take on but in order to enjoy this game to its fullest you need teamwork and, especially, a capable commander

servers are not too populated which is a pity as this game has great potential

Nuclear Dawn is one of the best team-based first-person shooter because You NEED to work with your teammates to defeat the opposing team!

If you don't feel like spending in some time for the learning process, and if you are not a team player, then this game is not your cup of tea.

This game represent a great effort from an indie developer, the graphics are good enough, the gameplay is ok, the con is that is a MP only game and is not that popular right now but you will find enough people to play with, if you want to support a good indie dev, get this game.

Great game with the right people.

Having a noob commander can be a headache but don't let that stop you from leveling up and unlocking 8 or more abilities. Plenty of servers and players with an emphasis on team-play. An experience not to be missed by source and FPS/RTS fans alike.

To define it as a genre would be an RTS-FPS-tower defense game. Both of the teams has a commander who builds turrets and shizz all over the map, and tries to help his team advance to the enemy base, while rest of his team goes around first person shooting.

Fast Action

By kaw19atlas posted 2nd February 2012

Nuclear Dawn is a refreshing break from the mindless shooter style perpetuated by Call of Duty or the likes, but still offers tons of adrenalin fueled action. It has a mix of cerebral decision making with a emphasis on skilled shooting and fighting which creates a really stellar experience.

My advice is to stay clear of this if your an rts fan but if you like mindless FPS then its good for a week or two

While I am not a huge fan of FPS, I fell in love with Nuclear Dawn for two main reasons: the powerful class system and the strategic emphasis. The whole game is dependent upon the success of the commander--infantry needs to be supported with structures to facilitate expansion and therefore success. While this can be frustrating when your team is losing and your commander is a fool, the experience is unrivaled. The class system is also very satisfying, accommodating all styles of play. Foot soldiers can coexist with building-wreckers and stealth assassins. The RTS aspect is also quite solid, though a bit too fast-paced for my tastes.

Finally some got the idea of combining a 1st person shooter with a RTS right. Great visials, and the gameplay is tons of fun. The only single player available is the training missions though, I hate to see the demise of single player campaigns. This is a Steam play game, so you will need to have a Steam account to play, using your key to activate it on steam. The download auto launches Steam to install.

Incredibly Satisfying Shooter

By jdrez posted 19th December 2011

This team-centric shooter is a must-have for anyone who enjoys games like the Battlefield series. This game is entirely infantry FPS with a RTS slant (think Savage, but better). Teamwork is necessary for a win in this game.

When I first saw the title, I thought "What? Another post-apocalyptic brainless shooter?" But when I researched it online, it became clear that this was something a bit more. Think of Team Fortress without all the things that makes it complicated. This one feels more real due to the atmosphere and even the worst gun can kill in a few well-placed bullets. What is more, there is a commander who plays a RTS game while you play FPS! He/she'll give you orders, build turrets for defenses, supply points for heal and ammo, and spawn points. the commander even researches some kits that can be used in game. I am extremely happy that I bought this for the best price ever on Gamersgate. Even you do use Steam to play it, I got it cheaper on GG. Thank you Gamersgate. Hey you! Go and buy this game, it's awesome.

Really spectacular game! RTS and FPS combined in single game? That's pretty amazing. The company made a really good job. I suggest everyone with interest in FPS and/or RTS to play this game. They will not regret it.

Love child of BF2142 & Natural Selection

By greydmiyu posted 19th October 2011

Take BF2142's infantry only mode, merge it with the human-side mechanics of Natural Selection and you have the perfect description of Nuclear Dawn. A good commander and teamwork, including a decent mix of classes, matter. Facing a foe who has all three and missing any one is a sure recipe for failure. Many people blame the commander but, really, an awesome commander with a group of people who can't settle on a decent mix of classes will still lose to a mediocre commander with a team that's meshing well.

The gunplay is a bit wobbly for a source engine game. The grenade mechanics & rocket are very choppy compared to something like TF2 or MNC. It's serviceable, just not very tight.

The game overall works. There are a few annoying things that the devs should clear up in time. The exceptional usefulness of EMP grenades, getting stuck in buildings, no squad-based comms and the pistol beating almost every other weapon at range outside sniper rifles.
