Miasma: Citizens of Free Thought review

this was a funny game for me. i was really starting to get into it, and then it ended. it didnt finish, it just ended. is there going to be a chapter 2 coming out? some sense of closure to the story? actually and build up at all? for me it was more like an intro to a game, at least to the storyline.

but for what there was of it, i enjoyed both the possibly interesting storyline, and the gameplay as well. found the use of action points whilst being useful, it was at times annoying as it did slow down the game, and i found myself sticking most of the level ups into speed. but for the few hours i did play it i enjoyed what it was.

hoping there is more to come out later.

I bought this game because the screenshots showed what looks like some sort of character development... a RPG touch ŕ la Jagged Allience.

Do not buy it on this premise. You would be disappointed.

The units are more like chess pieces offering even less customisation then back in Incubation.

Their abilities or weapons do not change.

This does not HAVE to be bad.

This game is a purely tactical challenge. No RPG aspect, no inventory micromanagement.

That is what the game does surprisingly well. You won't get by with exploiting the system or "camping" the best weapons. It's your mind against the game.

Quite impressive for an independent game. Though it does not have the level of detail and complexity as you would find from big commercial titles, it gets the important things right, making it a pleasant and entertaining game.

It does an excellent job creating a cold, futuristic feel throughout the game, which I like a lot. The combat system is simple but enjoyable. The plot twist right before the final mission is pretty interesting.

A lot of places in the game are screaming "amateur", but that's expected for an independent title. It does not have a manual, not even a readme. The camera control can be awkward at times. There's no real closure at the end of the game (probably because the developers are thinking about making an episode 2).

BTW: If you experience crashes at the depot mission, try downloading the game again or get the patch from the forum of its official website.

In a nutshell, this is a tactical maneuver game with some (cliched and not exactly inspired) dystopian story thrown behind it.

As a budget title, it's actually not that bad, graphics being the most impressive part of it; and simple-yet-working tactical maneuver mechanics being the second one.

Don't expect too much (it's hardly an Incubation-level material nor it tries to be) and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
