Legend of Grimrock

Rating: 4.3 (112 votes cast)

Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart but a modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exiling them to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to their captors, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations long perished now. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.

The game brings back the oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords could be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?

  • Explore a vast network of ancient tunnels, discover secrets and find a way to survive in the perilous dungeons of Mount Grimrock.
  • Cast spells with runes, craft potions with herbs and fight murderous monsters with a wide variety of weaponry.
  • Create a party of four characters and customize them with different races, classes, skills and traits.
  • Pure blooded dungeon crawling game with grid-based movement and thousands of squares riddled with hidden switches, pressure plates, sliding walls, floating crystals, forgotten altars, trapdoors and more.

Legend of Grimrock review

A new take on old school RPGs. This title reminds me a lot of the Shin Megami Tensei games, but with real time combat. Definitely get this one if you have any love for the old school dungeon crawling RPG genre, or perhaps just RPGs in general. Definitely worth looking into at least.

Reminiscent of Eye of the Beholder but much more challenging and dynamic. The story is simple but it's not about a complex tale of love and the duality of man... It's about staying alive to solve the next puzzle! The combat is fun and challenging but can sometimes be reduced to a complicated dance with the enemy. I'm enjoying the gameplay, but be forewarned - there is a lot more going on than the videos would suggest. Spell casting in itself is a skill that needs practice. If you enjoy a good dungeon crawl, get it on sale and you won't be disappointed.

With good graphics, smart puzzles and a ton of secrets to discover Legend of Grimrock pretty much hits the mark. Sure, it may not be for everyone, storytelling is weak and to call it old-fashioned would be an understatement. But if you ever cared about classics like Dungeon Master, this one is for you. Not only a love letter to Old School Dungeon Crawlers, but also fine game in its own right.

I'd give a solid 4/5, had some really good times with it.

Disappointed...

I was so disappointed with the Race choices at the beginning that I could barely play it. The options were too obscure and lacking even a touch of the usual fantasy stuff that RPGers like and are used to. Bad call whoever greenlighted that one and I pretty much regret purchasing it.

At first I thought it sucked

Well I got "Legend Of Grimrock" since it was a rpg and rpg being my favourite genre of game. I started playing it and I was like "WTF is going on?". I didn't know what was going on, how to attack and the tutorial wasn't that clear.

Looking at the screenshot, I thought it to be turn based. But sadly it wasn't so. One had to click on the hands( right click) to attack, which can be frustrating if your fingers are slow. And I had no idea that the mage could cast spell in the beginning. Frustrated I couldn't kill a lowly slime I gave up within 5 mins and never came back to it.

Then after a month I was really bored and had nothing to do. So I fired up "Legend Of Grimrock" again and thought to myself, "Lets give it 30 min this time.". And I ended up playing more than 4 hours. I had gotten used to the mechanics and finally realised the mage could cast spell from the very beginning.

My party started getting items and got stronger. Plus the puzzles were nice and the secret rewards were satisfying. I know I could have "goggled" up the walk through at the very beginning I first started the game. But I find it no fun if I learned it from those. I like to learn a game by myself by making mistakes and "Legend Of Grimrock" was no exception.

"Legend Of Grimrock" might put off people who are new to this genre, but give it time and get to know the game mechanics better. You will start to enjoy it. Although I would have prefer if the combat mechanics was more fluid( as someone also had mentioned it earlier). That being said, "Legend Of Grimrock" is a good game to own.

This is a great game especially if you are into old school RPGs. I have played it for about 30 hours by now and enjoyed every bit of it. One of the greatest additions to the game is dungeon editor becouse it's easy to use so you can create new dungeons for other to play on steam workshop also you can play dungeons made by other people after you finish main story so there is always new and fun content to play.

This game is truly a resurrection of ancient time RPG games like Lands of Lore, but with better graphics. However, it needs you to get used to complex map/teleporters puzzles again, the sort that you don't encounter in modern games very often. The monsters are very challenging, yet can be beaten. The atmosphere is dark and believable, as the story, short, let you get in the game very quickly.

Dungeon game much like the old type Dungeon games (eye of beholder)

Graphics are very good, doesn't need a demanding computer to play. Also after playing over 10 8 hours on the game, I'm still yet to complete.

You get a choice of having 4 in your party.

Each have different builds/stats.

Lot's of secrets in the game and also a great equipment range.

Good stuff here.

8/10

This is a game that surprised me a lot. It is like an old school RPG, but takes advantage of new times with improve graphics. I don´t know what it has, but you always want to go one more step into the dungeon. A nice game.

I bought this game becuase I used to play Dungeon Master two decades ago. I remembered Dungeon Master as very good game, actually one of the best games, and Legend of Grimrock seemed to be just like DM.

I must say that I wasn't disapointed. All those memories came back to me. This game is really much similar to what it used to be. 4 Person trying to fight their way out of the tunnel with melee, ranged weapons and magics.

Legend of Grimrock has done it's updates to old legend. The graphics are way much better, spell and skill system is somewhat different to what it used to be. But more importantly the Dungeon are new, monsters are new, small puzzles are new. The feeling is same, and some times it just scares me out to see whats behind next corner.

I bought this game because I like party-based RPGs with a first-person view, like the Might & Magic series.

Having said that, the game does deliver that part-based/first-person view I like, however, I feel that the combat controls (where you click on your character's hand to attack) are not the best way to go for real-time combat, more so when you are a caster and you cannot set a quick spell. That makes the combat results very dependent on the clicking speed/reaction time, I expect that from an action/fighting game not necessarily for a RPG, so for people like myself who does not have very good eye/hand coordination, the combat mechanics are a bit of a pain.

The exploring and puzzle solving is the best part for me, I have found myself getting closer and closer to the screen, like I was unconsciously trying to go with my "party". It can get a little claustrophobic at times with no open spaces and such, but if you're trapped in a network of mountain tunnels it is only logical.

The story did not grab my attention, I feel it's almost secondary to the game, a justification for the gameplay, but as I have not finished the game I cannot be sure how the storyline develops (even if it eventually does).

So far, I'm enjoying the game but I'm knocking one star for the combat mechanics. I might revise my rating when I finish the game and I can fully evaluate the game story-wise.

I would have given the game a preliminary 5 stars, if the game at least had an optional turn-based combat, then the combat mechanics wouldn't irk me so.
