GAME SUMMARY

Kenshi (Alpha)

Rating: 3.9 (1003 votes cast)

NOTE:  This game is a work in progress.  Regular updates will be improving the game over time, but bugs and missing features are to be expected at this early stage.  By purchasing the game now at this early stage you are supporting development and getting it for a lower price.

A free-roaming squad based RPG. Focusing on open-ended gameplay features rather than a linear story. Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a mercenary, a business owner, a doctor, a bandit... the list goes on. Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert. Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business. Train your men up from puny victims to master warriors. Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive.

  • Original take on the RTS-RPG hybrid genre. No "hero" characters with artificially stronger stats than everybody else-  Every character and NPC you meet is potentially an equal, and has a name, a life.
  • You are not the chosen one.  You're not great and powerful. You don't have more 'hitpoints' than everyone else. You are not the center of the universe, and you are not special. Unless you work for it.
  • Freeform gameplay in a seamless game world stretching over 400 square kilometers.  The game will never seek to limit you or restrict your personal play style.
  • Variation and possibilities of gameplay. Be good, be evil, be a business man, be a thief, live in a town, live in the desert, join the army, fight the army, travel alone, travel in hordes, build a fortress, raze a city.
  • Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business.
  • Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive.
  • Dynamic, ever changing world. Support or hinder whoever you wish, or keep to yourself, the world won't stop moving. This is not just a "game", you are living and surviving in a simulated world.
  • Absolutely no Level-scaling.  The world does not level up along with you, and the shops don't change their inventory to only items matching your level. At the start of the game almost everyone will be stronger than you, and survival will always be a struggle.
  • Realistic medical system that affects gameplay.  A character with a wounded leg will limp or crawl and slow the party down, wounded arms means you must use your sword one-handed or not at all.  Lose an eye and it will affect your field of vision.  Blood loss means you can pass out, and the blood will attract predators.  Exhaustion affects performance and is increased by equipment weight, weather, blood loss and thirst.  Severed limbs will need expensive robotic replacements.
  • Intelligent AI that allows for characters to reason and work towards long-term goals and desires. Squads work together and carry their wounded to safety. Characters can be setup to take care of micromanagement for you.
  • Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert.
  • Independently developed with no design influences, or alterations dictated by men in gray suits who have never played a game before in their lives.
  • Original game world. There are no fantasy-knock-off cliches. No magic.
  • Realistic physics simulation. PhysX Technology provided under license from NVIDIA Corporation. © 2002-2011 NVIDIA Corporation. All rights reserved.

Has alot of potential and if anyone has even the slightest interest in this game then they should buy it now. £8 for something that may grow into a £20 game, and you get to follow its progress and help it grow. Buy it 5/5

Cant say much about the game as it really is bare bones ALPHA atm,all these people giving it 5 stars are not been realistic the game is way way to early to have ANY honest idea about it,i gave it 3 stars because it is impossible to tell at this stage whether the game will be good or terrible.I would say the game is 12 months away from making any honest attempt at judging it.Just like sword of the stars 2 before release loads of people saying its great when they didn't really know then on release the game was a total mess and unplayable.

I hope the game is good thats why i paid for it upfront, but dont be misled atm its not a game its an idea in the making.

Kenshi (Alpha) review

Kenshi could easily be compated to the campaign map of mount & blade, but more detailed and more micromangement. Even in the current stage with a lot of feature lacking the game is interesting and could give you a couple of hours fun.

The gameplay is easy to understand and it pretty easy to master. Some thinking might be involved to see what best suits you game style. In the current version a lot is still lacking. All you can do is trade and fight.

The trading in itself is simply. You buy low and sell high. There is a stat with simply indicated how much of a procentage the price at the current location is under the normal price, so not need to note down all prices everywhere. The prices are also fixed in the current version meaning that even if you come back days later, the prices will be the same.

Fighting is also not complicated. You gain skill while using certain skills. When your character blocks, he becomes better at blocking, when he hit, he become better at fighting. There are different weapons and the same concept count for them. Using a weapon more often will make you better at it.

You can also recuit people who will lever the same way as you initial character meaning you could end up with a big army. A very interesting feature is the healing in this game. You get damages on certain body part and you can bleed and you need to fix yourself and teammates up. Not attending to your wounds might mean you have to limp back to town a slow pace.

There are going to be a lot of more interesting features. Faction will be more usefull. Already implemented and they do fight each other, but you can not join them at this point. You can build your own base, research, join trade caravans as a gaurd, join factions, etc. A game with a lot of potentiol and already a fun game at the moment.

This game really has a long way to go.

The first thing i notice is the setting, i really like post apocalyptic games like this. (Aka fallout 1-3) Many things havent been implemented yet, because the game IS in a beta stage. But it has great potential! Traveling from town to town trading and fighting bandits are the only things you can do right now, but you can hire mercenaries and slowly build this massive army that travels the wasteland obliterating any bandit parties. 5/5 for the potential, but in current state i'd give it a 3/5. If it lives up to all the promises it will be a 5/5 game. Mark my words!

Plenty of potential, a lot of which has not yet been realised.

This game is very bare-bones at the moment, but if you want to support some excellent ideas and great devs, then this is definitely worth the purchase.

Great potentional

Its still in alpha so its hard to judge it yet. But what i've seen it has great potentional the elements of crafting, building and fighting is very different from anny other game. The world is huge and you'll have to spend quite sometime if you want acomplice something. Best way to lvl up is to join other groups and best way to make money is looting.

Yes, it is an alpha, but don't fret - this is a quickly evolving game with a lot of possibilities. Even now, its premise (Samurai + Fallout) and gameplay are amazing, and the story it creates are fun to behold. This is not an easy game, mind you, but the only RPG I am aware of that makes you work for your chops.

When Call of Duty came out, it was special in that the player character was not a special ops operative, not a hero, but just one of the grunts trying to survive on the battlefield. Kenshi does the same for the RPG genre, and I am looking forward to seeing its full potential realised.

This Alpha-stage game looks promising. It's missing many features that would make this enjoyable, but I've been looking for something like this since my days playing CRPG's.

I like the fact it's very realistic and you can build your toon up from bare-bones while maintaining a reality check: you can die and you can be severely disabled. Now if only you can create your own team of toons to play. Will keep checking the official forums to see its progress.
