Jagged Alliance Back in Action is a contemporary remake of the latest title in the much-loved Jagged Alliance series of turn-based mercenary-themed strategy games. Designed from the ground up to offer a modern gaming experience, Back in Action showcases an updated isometric 3D look and interface, highly detailed character models and a variety of new gameplay features.
Back in Action takes players to the fictitious country of Arulco, where a ruthless dictator has seized power and only a small group of rebels stand to resist him. Tasked with freeing the island from the dictator’s iron grip, players will command rebel and mercenary forces while using tactical, diplomatic and economic tools to keep troops supplied and ready for the next flight, all while commanding them directly in nail-biting battles.

Back in Action’s innovative “plan & go” combat system combines real-time strategy (RTS) with turn-based elements to guarantee that the intricacies of tactical warfare are rendered in dynamic, exciting gameplay. This challenges would-be commanders to master not only strategy and tactical combat, but also to maximize their team’s capabilities through RPG-like character advancement.

  • Unrivaled mix of combat (tactics), roleplay, business and strategy
  • Innovative “Plan & Go” combat system combines RTS gameplay with turn-based elements

Jagged Alliance - Back in Action review

I liked the original, but can't stand it anymore because its interface is just too old.

This game is really good. Lots and lots of hours of fun. Good and easy interface. Good graphics. If you like tactical combat like XCom, give this a try. It is REALLY good. Not as polished as the new XCom, but with a lot more options.

If you just want to play sometimes an hour, take XCom, if you want to waste some days, weeks or months, give this a try.

Missing features that made JA2 nice to play, and replay. A pain in ass if not utilizing space bar. Militia is hard to maintain. There's no move from sector only from the map. No real mine interiors, missing some quests from original JA2, but it's okay. Expect to run out of shoes quite often, and have lack of medical supplies, repair items, and no way to repair armor I can find. Civilians can't be killed it seems lol. :D Mercs will have quite a difficult time getting anywhere at first even with longest range weapons on game. Lot's of saving, and reloads like I said utilize space bar, or die lol. :D It's a good game don't get me wrong, but I think the Original JA2 was kind of better. I'm still putting some hours in this one though. Game just doesn't seem as replay-able, or as enjoyable to me.

I played JA2 a lot, really. Great game, with strategy, tactics, humor, depth... a masterpiece.

This game is the opposite. No humor, no tactics, no strategy. In short, a dull and boring game. JA just deserved better.

A long time, no see! This is worth the price I paid for it. Great management of a merc. company, nice squad tactical theater. I love to manage my mercenaries from their boots to their helmet. The only thing bad is the enemy AI, always doing the same thing and I still wonder why the guy 20 meters away never heard the sound of my Mercs' AK-47s...

If you were a fan of the original Jagged Alliance you are sure to love this just as much. Nothing new really other than updated graphics. Still kind of hard for new players to get the hang of what their doing and like the original it does not really point you in the right way to go, but if your patient or a veteran to jagged alliance you should do fine and have a blast playing this game.

With the latest patch and the "Combat Evolved"-mod, the developers have achieved the impossible: Jagged Alliance Back in Action has become a worthy successor to the genre kingpin JA2.

Jagged Alliance : BIA has received a lot of bad press and lukewarm reviews. A lot of this has to do with releasing the game in an unfinished state (seemingly a financial necessity), and making changes to the revered formula of JA2.

The devs have continually been patching BIA since its release, and the two issues mentioned above have more or less been resolved. Most recently, line of sight has been added, and a more robust militia leveling system has been implemented. However, if you're married to the idea of turn based, and the complexities of JA2, BIA may still not be for you.

BIA is a pausable, real-time tactical combat game, with RPG and management layers. The player is given the task of liberating the island nation of Arulco from its dictatorial queen and her army. The game is stable, well balanced, looks good, and plays like a dream.

Jagged Alliance Back In Action is, in it's current state, a fine homage to the original Jagged Alliance games, while many people can't get over the fact that the game has evolved from turn based to a pause and go system, I personally prefer it.

After some patching, several basic, but sorely missed, improvements have been implemented into the game, including the sector inventory feature and fog of war. They also fixed the fact that when you change weapon, whichever weapon you pull out always has to be reloaded before you can fire it, which was a silly idea in the first place, since it negated the idea of having a sidearm at all. Why pull out a pistol once your rifle clip is empty when you only have to reload it as soon as you draw it?

Further more, they opened up a lot more freedom for modders in the newer patches, giving them a lot more to play with. I highly recommend buying this and adding the Blue Dawn mod, which gives you advanced difficulty options, rebalances all of the weapons and introduces a host of new ones as well.

Back In Action is not a perfect game, but I have had a LOT of fun playing it.

Just to give you some background on my tactical history, the first game I played of a tactical nature was Brigade E5: New Jagged Union, which I enjoyed a lot, despite it being bug ridden. I did get the Badass Mod for that, which is a general overhaul mod that adds more weapons and items and so on. After that, I decided to give JA2 a go and see what I thought about it. I do like turn based combat (I play X-Com), but I found something about it lacking and never really got into it properly. I did play it, but not for long without getting bored. After seeing that the newer game was significantly different to JA2, I decided to try this one and I've yet to be disappointed.

Its not turn-based like the original series, but the new iteration of Jagged Alliance has a charm to it. With the new update, the developers gave the gaming community most of what they asked for and the updates just keep on coming.

The action is pretty fast although the strategic elements need some more improvements, the tactical aspects are well designed and extremely functional. If you are looking for a squad based strategy game with a lot of depth, Jagged Alliance: Back in Action offers a lot of gameplay for its price.

If you come at this game like a clone of JA2 with shiny new graphics then you'll be disappointed ,if you look at it as an evolution of JA2 then it is a good game.

The plan and go system gives you way more flexibility than you ever had with JA2 ,if you charge in guns blazing you will lose your mercs ,but if you take the time to plan your attacks you get the rewards - it's a thing of beauty to see a coordinated assault - snipers take out the guards as the guys you've stealthed to the windows pop up and drop grenades into room full of bad guys :D

I really like this game. There's a real shortage of good tactical / strategic military games for PC players and this fills that gap perfectly.

I've enjoyed the Silent Storm, Men of War and X-Com games and this is is a similar vein, although not turn-based the option to stop the action and plan our your squad's moves is done really well. There are loads of weapons which can all be customized with attachments (scopes, silencers etc.). You can adopt stealth tactics or just go in all guns blazing (although if you're like me you try the stealthy approach, which will soon turn into chaos).

The game has got a few flaws, such as the annoyance of securing an area only to have the enemy move in as soon as your back is turned. However I still think it deserves 5 stars for being brave enough to be offer a more thoughtful and strategic game in an over-hyped Call of Duty dominated current games market. It's also fun to play with good combat.

Unfortunately, this game will most likely be a disappointment for diehard Jagged Alliance fans. The game has been streamlined, most likely to appeal to a wider audience. This process has stripped most of the details that made the original games special. Instead of a game continuing the legacy of previous Jagged Alliance titles, it plays like a run-of-the-mill RTS game. Sure, there's autopause and plotting of movement - but it doesn't work very well since the "pause when orders are completed" doesn't seem to work at all, the camera makes giving orders a pain, and constant micromanagement is needed since your mercenaries aren't at all intelligent about what to do if you don't direct them.

But JA wasn't just combat, was it? No, but the RPG/adventure elements are sorely lacking in this game. Granted, I don't KNOW this since I haven't completed the game - but I haven't seen any mystery, suspense or puzzles after playing the first three maps - and there's little hope for there being any later in the game either.

This is quite obviously a conscious design choice, since the game has the exact same story as JA2, and the cast is the same as well. This obviously eliminates a lot of suspense. To make matters worse, there is no fog of war - as soon as you enter a map you get to see exactly where all the enemies are. Last of all, dialogs are entirely straightforward, and there doesn't seem to be any intrigue whatsoever - just find the NPC with a blue exclamation mark, talk to them and then click the first dialog button until the dialog finishes in order to receive the next quest or whatever. Straightforward, streamlined, dull and boring.

Where to begin. I'm not a "jagged alliance fanboy". I have played the originals, I found them quite fun, but I'm not "qualified" to compare them. So bear that in mind!

Now: It is quite good fun, slow and methodical works well, and overall the "pause and go" system works fine once you get used to it. Is it better than turn based ? that's a personal choice.

As a game in its own right, its fun, and worth a look. Its a solid tactical shooter, with some nice touches.

Few points for people who are considering it :

It has -no- Fog Of War. You can see everyone on the map at all times. This is a bit odd, and possibly going to be patched/optional later on.

You cannot make your own Merc.

It activates on Steam.

I am quite disapointed with this remake. Its like the developers decided to take out as much of the options and mechanics as possible which made the original easy and fun to play. The missing sector inventory is just one of the things i am missing desperately. It is not even possible to trade from one merc to the other from the merc inventory if they are close enough. Now you have to select a special trade windoe which hides most of the merc informations and there equiped items. So to give a weapon to another merc you have to find the merc who has the weapon, select him, hit the trade button, select the second merc, transfer the weapon to his inventory, close the trade screen, select the second merc and then equip the weapon, Compared to the original this is so inconveniant. And these are just some of the things which annoy me greately, not even speaking of the butchered gameplay.

My advice: don´t waste your money on this, just play the original. It may be old, but it is way better then this attempt of a money grap.
