GAME SUMMARY

Heroes of Annihilated Empires

Rating: 3.5 (121 votes cast)

With Heroes of Annihilated Empires, GSC Game World leaves for a while Real-Time Strategy historical games to offer us an incredible medieval fantastic universe. This is the most ambitious project since their first hit, Cossacks European Wars.

With HOAE (Heroes of Annihilated Empires), GSC doesn’t only conceive the game, they create a true imaginary universe. A universe that became a place for 4 exceptional races ready to jump into a war more violent than ever before on these lands. Leading one of those races, you will have to bring your powerful armies to the victory. Prepare yourself  to brave many dangers, resolve numerous quests and make strategic decisions to win gigantic battles during this huge saga.

The mix of real-time strategy and role-playing games will enable the player to become a hero in the middle of an epic adventure. He will have to make his tactical decisions relying either on his army’s strengths (Strategy) or on his hero’s power (Role Playing Game). In some quests, it will often be possible to focus on increasing the main character’s competencies rather than the size of his army. In HOAE, the question is not about units’ management but about taking command of real armies made up of thousands of men that will take part in violent battles full of fury and magic.

By using their own engine well known for its management of thousands of units and mixing 2D and 3D elements, HOAE’s team has brilliantly combined the distinct gameplays of Role Playing and Real-Time Strategy games in a Heroic Fantasy universe, mixing the genres as well as the technologies to offer a brand new epic experience.

  • The first chapter of the Heroes Of Annihilated Empires trilogy, half way between the RTS and the RPG worlds, by Cossacks’ developers.
  • Become the hero of one of the 4 « Heroic Fantasy » races and take control of your armies, your empire and your thousands of men!
  • Possibility to develop your hero and to gain new competencies and artefacts.
  • Confront thousands of units on various types of battlefields corresponding to the 4 nations.
  • All races are unique and have their own assets and flaws. Each one has its own units, technological development tree, spells and buildings.
  • Powerful tactical features strenghtened by many strategic, military and magical possibilities.
Large-scale battles with up to 64.000 units on the battlefield.
  • 12 heroes, 100 different units, 70 buildings, 50 magical spells to choose from.
  • Using the 3D and 2D technologies offers an epic game experience and unique graphics.
  • « Random maps » and « pseudo-historical battles » features playable in solo or in multiplayer modes.
  • Multiplayer mode until 7 by LAN or on Internet.

A surprisingly enjoyable and problem-free game with close to AOE3 RTS action and a manageable RPG element via your hero. I am more a wargamer than RTS or RPG fan, but recommend it at full price of $10. I was almost embarrassed to pay $2.50 on sale for a quality game like this, but GSC World owed me for the Cossacks titles that never worked on my machine :}

You can Google a fan site or two and get some skirmish maps, as it only comes with four, I think, but there is a random generator, too. You really get a lot for your money, and for a 2006 release, it looks good to me. Have fun!

Heroes of Annihilated Empires review

The Heroes of Annihilated Empires (HOAE) is a visually interesting RTS game having RPG elements in it. The main campaign has about 15 levels and I have played till Chapter 4 already. The voice acting of the main lead, Elhant (pronounced like Ellen with a "t" at the end) is quite impressive and strong. Elhant is an elf defending his country of elves from the undead who are rising up from their graves in droves.

I loved the campaign cutscenes in HOAE - they are rendered like a comic book stories and the art (and ink used) is very vivid and beautiful. As for the game itself, the gameplay kind of reminds me of Cossacks. I have thus far found myself wandering around collecting troops, but in Chapter 3, I finally started building a base with "farmer" and "soldier" types. There are 5 resources (population, food, wood, iron crystals) and quite a varied number of buildings to build.

The game can be quite hectic and literally a click-fest when the enemies wade along in the hundreds. You will find yourself being defeated if you don't plan carefully (even though it is easy mode). Truly a challenging and enjoyable game.

Note: According to the Russian forums (and brought over to the English forums), the game has a built-in editor that is assessed by clicking CTRL+"A", where on the title page - A is the first letter of the word Annihilated. And, if you look around on the net, you will find cheat codes to give your treasure, see maps, etc.

Heroes of Annihilated Empires review

Heroes of Annihilated Empires,i found this game quite by accident! I am so glad i did because its really good fun.

If you are into spellforce kinda games this is for you.You take the role of Elhant in a mixture of real-time strategy and role-playing game gameplay. You can level up your hero, get new spells and find tons of loot throughout the game world.

Have to say there are quite alot of spells to choose from to help you in your battle against the undead.

The game can be frustrating at times, especially when you have just started to build up your village and you are attacked from four sides by hordes of the undead.(you may need a few goes at certain missions).I found this to be a good challenge and a way to change strategy from time to time.

For the price of this game its worth a shot!
