GAME SUMMARY

Dungeons

Rating: 4 (268 votes cast)

A mighty hero stalks through a dark, dank dungeon making life miserable for hordes of pitiable monsters as he steals anything and everything not bolted to the floor. Been there, done that - about a thousand times? Then it is definitely time to switch sides and show that hero just who's who in the dungeon!

Assume the role of a mighty (and mighty evil) Dungeon Lord and create your own diabolical demesnes underground. Dim-witted goblin workers tremble as they await your orders and dig corridors and rooms into the rock at your command.

Heroes will visit your dungeon in search of battle and treasure. Naturally, you could always just annihilate them with a snap of your fingers. But isn't it more entertaining and deliciously evil to watch them attain their heart's desire - and then take take it ALL away?

So throw them a few treasures and some equipment, give them a couple of fights for entertainment and cherish and look after them. And once they are finally happy enough - it's time for the "harvest". For happy heroes have more valuable soul energy for you to gleefully extract from them in your prison or torture chamber!

But even though these self-proclaimed warriors for the good are not much more than an excellent source of resources for you, you still should not underestimate them. If you've beaten up too many of their friends, the powerful and vindictive Champions will occasionally make their way to your Dungeon. Perhaps a small sum could persuade them to forget their moral and ethical principles for once?

In addition to the heroes, you should also always keep an wary eye on the underground. For the competition never sleeps, and other Dungeon Lords would like to claim your territory for themselves. As if that were not enough, another Dungeon Lord lives one level below you who, to top it all off, is also your boss and bombards you with useless tasks! Of course, it goes without saying that malicious and sneaky beings such as yourself are already hard at work trying to take his place!

Story

The game revolves around Deimos, foremost of all Dungeon Lords. He falls victim to a devious plot hatched by his vile, nasty, thoroughly vicious ex-girlfriend Calypso, and suddenly finds himself at the bottom of the hierarchy and the top of the dungeon once again.

As the story proceeds Deimos tries to regain his old place and have his well-deserved revenge on Calypso. First, however, he will have to deal with his new bosses. On the one hand , there's the Zombie King, who is about as intelligent as your average undead zombie is likely to be, and on the other there's hot-blooded Minos, who likes to solve problems using violence or, alternatively, more violence.

Key features:

  • Be insidious! Three different Boss Monsters await in order to give you a real hard time. Get rid of them to become the one and only Dungeon Lord!
  • Get ready for a fight! 10 different classes of heroes dare to enter your dungeon where 15 different monsters lurk in the dark
  • The 17 campaign missions demand your whole cunningness as evil dungeon lord. If you manage to survive them there's still the custom game waiting for you.
  • In a dungeons there's only one way: going down. 3 different levels wait to be conquered by you.
  • Prison cells and torture chambers are ready for your command and await “customers”
  • Create the dungeon of your dreams with 50 different objects
  • Wimpy goblin workers await your commands and create the dungeon after your wishes.

It misses the epicness of Dungeon Keeper games completely. It ended up being a repetitive tower like game. Good graphics and animations though, but not as much freedom in unit control.

A very interesting game in which you control minions to protect your dungeon. Very similar to Dungeon Keeper, with some element of strategy involved. Funny to play, it will certainly not break any new ground. Some of the major problems are related to graphic (pretty bad) and stability (bugs crashing to the desktop kind). Overall, I had a positive experience.

Pretty fun game. Like others have mentioned on the other reviews, it reminds you of Dungeon Keeper. You just don't have as much control as you did in Dungeon Keeper. I'm enjoying the campaign quite a bit. The game has some pretty interesting humor.

This is an interesting little game. I wouldn't call it great but I also wouldn't call it bad.

There a number things that I like about it:

You get to see a new twist on the tried and true dungeon crawler experience.

The writing and plot themselves are humorous and interesting.

Overall, it's fun to play

That said, there are also number of faults:

This game looks pretty bad.

It is sometimes quite boring and drags on, especially at times when you don't even need to monitor your dungeon.

You don't get nearly as much control of your dungeon as I would have hoped.

In general, I would try Dungeons out before you buy it. But if your willing to spend a few dollars for an interesting game then go ahead and get this one.

This game is awesome! You lure hero's into your dungeon and kill em for their soul. Super fun dungeon game, that puts you as the bad guy, yay!

While similar in theme to dungeon keeper it does not play as it. It plays more like a tower defends if it should be compared to a genre although the game is still rather unique. The most unique aspect of the game is the main resource (be sides gold) the heroes soul energy. Gathering of the soul energy require that the heroes are kept happy by doing what heroes exploring dungeons now do (killing monsters, gathering gold, disarming traps, etc.). While not the best game in the world the games is funny and interesting. I would recommend giving it a look if the above premise sounds at all entertaining

Dungeons: Reconsidered

By neurotic_shadow posted 21st May 2012

Dungeons initially received a quite cold welcome amongst gaming critics, and was largely viewed as developer Kalypso's unsuccessful attempt to imitate Bullfrog's Dungeon Keeper titles.

While drawing inspiration from Dungeon Keeper 2, Kalypso has taken the "dungeon builder/hero slayer" formula and reworked it into a very interesting and engaging concept.

The technical errors so ranted about by critics have been successfully addressed, and many new features have been added since Dungeons' initial release. Seeing as almost no reviewer updates their reviews after the game's initial release, prospective players will only read about a game that has long since been greatly improved.

So don't worry about the critics' outdated reviews - if you're a fan of Dungeon Keeper (or just like slashing heroes to ribbons) Dungeons won't disappoint you.

I thought this game would have the same appeal as Dungeon Keeper, but it falls far short. There is too many things going on from the very first levels and it doesn't give you enough time to learn what your supposed to be doing.

Dungeons is a fun successor to the Dungeon Keeper legacy. It’s similar enough to recapture the old spark, with enough of its own ideas that you won’t feel like a traitor for playing it. It’s not exactly the Dungeon Keeper 3 we wanted, but it is the only one we’re likely to get.

I'm a great fan of this game. Yes, it has some problems: only a few types of rooms, somewhat repetitive campaign missions, etc. No, it doesn't measure up to my silver-lined memories of Dungeon Keeper. I honestly don't think that's a fair comparison though. I'm pretty sure that I remember DK as being much more fun than it actually was.

For those who did play DK back in the day, this game is somewhat different. Heroes are far more important, and monsters are less so. It will take some time to get used to the new mechanics. Go into the game expecting this, and I think you'll enjoy it.

So, while I can't give the game five stars because it does have some problems, I certainly can recommend that you give this game a try. If you like building dungeons and managing monsters, I think there's a lot to be said for Dungeons.

Pleased overall

I played all the way through the campaign, so Dungeons was entertaining enough to justify the sale price I paid for it. I won't delve into the mechanics of the game because it has been discussed many times before me. I'm not a huge fan of real time strategy games (my favorites are turn based strategy ones), so this one was a nice fit. It wasn't too fast for me to keep up and the humor was just right. The only thing preventing a 5 star rating was a lack of a random map generator, no maps outside the campaign that present a challenging opponent or mission objectives, and the stability issues plaguing the campaign. The final map alone took me days to complete because it crashed a dozen or so times on me. Single player maps don't appear to have these issues so I'm suspecting problems with their scripts in the campaign. Still worth the buy if you are into a Dungeon Keeper-lite theme.

A lot of hate for this game, which I can understand being that the game has many faults, but also MANY strengths for those who can see through the flaws. I like the game, and having not played any other dungeon management type of game before, I can say that I have a lot of interest in the type. It's sort of mind-settling in a dark, sadistic type of way, which may be specific to me, but I know I'm not alone alone the lines of appreciating a lot about this game, but it's really hard to love it. Pick it up if you are patient and one of the select few gamers who can see through the bad, this title is a great addition to your collection.

Yes yes yes - everyone talks about the past - Dungeon Master this / Dungeon Master that, Majesty this / Majesty that. Both are great games, but so is this.

Yes more bells, whistles and light shows and less gameplay - but not waste of time by a long shot.

Value for money - yes

Stay away from it!

Normally I wouldn't bash a game publicly, but this game is just horrible. It's a micromanaging hell made out of horrible, dated graphics, horrible controls and laughable voice acting.

The gameplay itself is tedious, repetitive, and just not fun. You build the same 20 decorations for your dungeon, lure heroes into your dungeon, and when they are satisfied, you kill them yourself. Yourself that is a slow moving sluggish, badly animated avatar that you have to move to every hero. By yourself. Again and again and again.

Just get the original Dungeon Keeper for your dungeon keeping needs, or try Majesty 2. But don't waste your money on that game.

Interesting dungeon lords throw back. I am not sure why they don't have a random map generator. Replayablity is very limited. Once you are done the campaign there is just some timed/challange maps. There is no free play VS AI maps (outside of the campaign).

Like many have mentioned; this is NOT Dungeon Keeper 3. Actually it takes a totally different approach. Instead of being evil, you are instead more of a Hotel Manager and want to please your "customers" (heroes). From which you get soul energy from, which you then use to grow stronger and build more.

It's very easy, and does not offer much for experienced strategy gamers. You can get buy with the same method throughout the whole game. A shame really.

If you are looking for a building game that offers more strategy I would suggest Evil Genius, or even the old Dungeon Keeper games.

But if you are looking for a game to just kill-time with, enjoy building stuff, and want a game that does not offer much challenge, then this game is for you!

By Kneecap posted 22nd February 2011

Dungeons is not quite the "Dungeon Keeper 3", which is a bit of a shame, but it's still a good game. Humor is there, graphics look good and the light setting is "cheery".

In this game you are a dungeon master, you decide where to put different rooms and where to dig corridors. After a while, treasure seeking heroes come to your lair of evil things and try to loot your gold. Which is a good thing, since you want them to take your money. After they have filled their pockets with loot and satisfied their need of violence, then you strike. Catch them and put them in your prison. There they "produce" soul power for you to use.

So, this is a good game, but it is not Dungeon Keeper 3. But it stands on it's own legs, and is quite fun to play. I recommend this game.

I bought this game quite cautiously as I wasn't sure quite what I should expect. It's quite an addicting game, and overall, many factors make it a hugely fun game.

Graphics (7/10)

The graphics are pretty good for this type of game, and ontop of that, you can flick between third and aerial view which is pretty awesome!

Music (9/10)

The music has a great 'ring' to it and each map has it's own unique music. The music at the menu is pretty great and I think this altogether helps to give the game the creepy edge.

Re-playability (7/10)

Although fun for a few hours, after a while of being in the same dungeon - it seems to get tedious quite quickly. You can also play in sanbox which is good, however, again it gets quite boring after a while.

Gameplay (9/10)

The gameplay is great, and there are many different things you have to save 'souls' for. For example - improving your Dungeon Lords' stats, gaining new abilities and spells, funkifying your dungeon, and just generally adding things that will make those heroes go crazy!

Overall (7.5/10)

The game is pretty sound, however, it has something missing. I'm not sure what that 'something' is, but it just feels a bit empty at the moment. However, I would recommend you buy it, because I definitely do not regret buying it and keep going back to play it every once in a while!

Warning: If you are looking for new "Dungeon keeper", don't buy this game!

There are similarities, you are an evil dungeon lord who dwells in an underground, reigns over mischievous creatures BUT:

Despite the look and type (not quality) of humor are quite similar to the famous predecessor, the game mechanics it's vastly different. In Dungeons you are NOT trying to keep heroes, who are coming from designed entrances in waves, from your dungeon as far as possible, prevent them to steal you riches and kill your precious creatures. On the contrary you plan and build your dungeon to exactly let them to do this as much as possible. Are you asking why the hell an evil lord should do that? Well, because the punch line of Dungeons is that kind of gameplay, I described before, explains why the dungeons in all action-RPG looks that way (where all the gold and items are from? why all that junk is just lying in the corridor). The reason for this is SOUL Energy, thing that every ambitious Dark lord wants: with SE you upgrade your creatures, increase number of goblins (workers) and so. How do you get it? From HAPPY heroes. You harvest it from them, after you killed them, so yes, eventually you should kill these stinky "good-doers", after they satisfied their barbaric needs(actually you don't kill them in fight, you capture them, throw them into the prison where they rot to the death). The game is designed the way that you are supposed to kill heroes with your evil lord himself, because if the adventurer is murdered (what a harsh word) by your creature you get quite big penalty in obtained SE. Your lord of evil is on gameplay map himself and he is under your direct control (actually the only one in the whole game). He can cast spells, fight with his staff (or whatever it is) and making great impressions when enters a room. You have got him selected for WHOLE game, which is sometimes uncomfortable when you misclick. Because He is also your last line of defence when the heroes decide to straight forward to your Dungeon heart to destroy.....and you don't want to let them do that, really not, because if your DH is destroyed, the game is over. To make the fights with heroes easier there is a basic development system where you can spend some points (earned for achievements and objectives) in attributes (strength, agility, intelligence, constitution-guess what they are good for) and skill tree where you can unlock new abilities and spells.

There are 3 other resources than SE in the game: it is an ordinary and favourite gold, that's used for buying treasure chests (yeah, I see the irony too), that are plundered by heroes, obtaining room items for library, armory and prison, where you satisfy needs of these pesky adventurers (expect the prison of course) and purchasing pentagrams, where creatures are summoned, every type of creature has it's own pentagram, from every pentagram four minions are summoned and after they are killed they respawn (save&exit no need!) in one minute or so and as I said you CANNOT control your creatures. There is an action radius around the pentagram. The second but as well important function is that the pentagram expands your territory-you can place there your new items and extents your sight. Every built pentagram uses some points from population which is the second "resource", you can increase it by finding lairs of different monsters (if it is the first lair of certain kind, it enables that type of creature), and getting it to your territory. The final resource (not exactly) is a prestige, which serves more as an indicator of your progress in mission. It enables you place new items, have more goblins, makes your lord stronger and sometimes it's a mission objective. You increase it by prestige items called hilariously (oh really) gimmicks which cost SE.

So making it simple: there are heroes, they have got similar needs (sometimes little different, depends on their class and mood, I guess), you are trying fulfill them and in the right moment cut them down before they are fully satisfied, meanwhile not letting destroy your dungeon heart in the process. For that you get soul energy and gold (Yeah, irony strikes again). You spend it for upgrading the creatures, getting gimmicks, that increase your prestige, which enables you get better items, which more efficiently fulfill needs of the heroes, so you will get more soul energy from them and again, again, again, again.

Yeah, it could be quite repetitive, especially after several missions (when you have already seen most of game content) and that is, I honestly believe, why in that moment comes enemy dungeon lord who should have same options and same problems as you.......but I doubt it. You can kill his creatures, capture his pentagrams, destroy his dungeon heart, after all you can kill him. But the AI of the opponent wasn't too challenging, or I am strategic genius, but I am afraid that this is not the case.

One of the bigge

First, let me start by saying this is not Dungeon Keeper 3. If you come to this game expecting it to be anything like Dungeon Keeper, you will be disappointed. That said, Dungeons is still a great game.

Think of it as THEME Dungeon. You are supposed to keep an awesome dungeon full of prestigious items that will attract adventurers. Keep the adventurers happy as they go through your dungeon, then just as they are about to leave, kill them and harvest their soul energy!

This game plays very much like a tower defense game and a dungeon sim put together. The game is a twist on what we would expect from a game like this. It is both funny, and macabre at the same time. This is definitely a great game, and what's better is that the devs are an active part of the forum community.

If you liked Dungeon Keeper, tower defense games, or the Sims, you might like this game!
