Good game, crippled by DRM

By Jediloop posted 21st March

First of all - the game in itself is a good, solid platformer. It highly resembles most foux-3D platformers from 1990-ties, on which I grew up. On top of that the concept of jumping from one cargo container to another IN SPACE is something new and refreshing. The platforming is solid and fun. On top of that you have the 'F' key... a little bit of juvenile humour from time to time is nice.

But unfortunately the game has a huge disadvantage in one of the worst DRM form of any kind - always online connection to the official servers (which are prone to disconnections) is necessary. So keep this in mind when buying the game.

A little rough around the edges with some graphical issues that will hopefully be patched, but otherwise a great indie game that's full of quirky flavour. The easiest way to describe Cargo Commander is probably 'challenging platformer + graphical nethack in space'. You're looting abandoned cargo containers in randomly generated sectors. Each container is essentially a platforming level in itself, with the added challenge of shifting gravity and the cold hard vacuum of space outside the flimsy container walls. Watch out for the former, mutated Cargo Commanders that also frequently occupy the containers. Definitely a good buy from Steam.

Cargo Commander makes the player raid cargo containers that float through space by first attracting them to the space station the player resides in and then forcing said player to find a way in before a wormhole destroys the container and forces the player to find shelter inside the space station. Once inside a container, the player loots and shoots until the containers have been cleared so that the process can be repeated again. In the mean time, you'll find new weapons, enemies and you'll be able to purchase upgrades that last temporarily. Unfortunately, as a platform game, Cargo Commander just isn't any fun. It plays smoothly but has a tendency of obscuring your view, its graphics are sub-par to other, even older, platform games and although it has some charm, it did not manage to captivate me. The weapons are boring, the enemies uninspired and the containers all look the same after a short while.

It's basically a platformer mixed with roguelike in space. You're looting abandoned cargo containers in randomly generated sectors. Each container is essentially a platforming level in itself, with the added challenge of shifting gravity and the cold hard vacuum of space outside the flimsy container walls.

I bought this at a huge discount and it is a fantastic game. Very addictive and extremely easy to get engrossed in. The game has a nice rank system and competitive leaderboards that are great encouragement to keep playing. Cargo Commanders has a great feel and soundtrack which makes it easy to settle into exploring the numerous and random levels available.

The only (small) problem I have experienced with this game is that the game's way of centering the screen can sometimes get confusing and this can make it difficult to navigate the containers.

However despite this issue, this is a very worthwhile game and there is surely many hours of entertainment in it.

A satisfying time killer.

Well, what a nice Christmas surprise to see this so cheap.

Not much to add to the comments; this game is a fun little gem that'll keep you at it for quite some time. Unfortunately the challenge ultimately turns out to be a little on the shallow side, but there're still hours of fun to be had before you hit that saturation point.

And at this price - well, that's a lot of fun for pennies. Worth a punt.

This game seriously needs more exposure! Part platformer, part shooter, part roguelike... if you like those genres, you'll find really interesting ideas here. Cargo Commander is fun and engaging game, with a quality way above it's price. Hope it get bundled some day so more people will discover it and give the developers love.

The premise of Cargo Commander is straightforward: you play as an average blue-collar interstellar salvage specialist, working long hours away from your wife and child in the hopes of gathering enough valuable items in order to advance your ranking in Cargo Corp and return to your family. One of the more enjoyable aspects of the game encountered early on is the way Cargo Commander tells its story: through regular e-mails you receive from others. Each sender has their own attitude that becomes apparent once you delve into the messages. Cargo Corp’s cold and clinical disposition when listing off its expectations for you stand in stark contrast to the warm and personal tone found in the e-mails sent by your wife.

Each sector that the player enters presents the same challenge: find as many cargo crates as possible during each wave and try to bring them back to your home container. Many obstacles litter the path to successful scavenging; glowing explosive crates, the airless vacuum of space between containers, wormholes destroying the ground from under you leaving you stranded in open space, and former Cargo Corp employees turned savage semi-crystalline undead beasts bent on doing a great deal more than just ruining your lunch break.

Once in every sector, you will be faced with a larger container to search for a Sector Pass, a key that allows you to travel to another sector or randomly generates a new sector for you to explore and plunder. This little addition does give the game a fair bit of replay value to it; with a Sector Pass to be found in each new sector, you could potentially create infinite amounts of new levels to further explore.

This is a genuinely fun arcade game. Many of its features are similar to roguelike games, and it also has a rating system which allows you to challenge your Steam Friends.

Another working day in the outer rim... Cargo Commander

By DonVino posted 22nd December 2012

Getting out of bed, grab a coffee, look at your to do list for today, geab your suit and your gun and activate the giant magnet to bring you come crates you can loot. Business as usual. But beware of the aliens and black holes.

A nice and entertaining game for some afternoon delight. Simple, but entertaining. 4/5 from me.

A fun platformer that gives random generation an online twist, but lack of depth stops this from being a job for life.

The key satisfaction of the 2D platforming is your ability to create your route. You’ll face impassable obstacles, low gravity, no gravity and hordes of mutants, but your commander has a drill that enables him to remove walls and platforms. Can’t reach the cargo you’ve been employed to collect? Take out a side panel, jump into the vacuum of space, manoeuvre around the container and re-enter through the top. Just try not to think about how you’re able to survive without a helmet or navigate without propulsion. Trade secrets.

This game is GREAT! Genuinely great!

First time I've saw this game, my first reaction was: Yet another indie platformer... But after I've watch the trailer, I gave it a try, and Wow. The gameplay is very addictive, it's a great mix between platforme, roguelike, shoot'em'up and RPG. The whole randomization thing give a very fresh feel every time.

This game is a must have.

Cargo Commander review

What if Dead Space and VVVVVV had a child? Maybe it would look like Cargo Commander, for this game has an amazing claustrophobic survival space atmosphere baked in a nice retro 2D art-style and the frantic action of a hyperactive platformer, along with the supply looting twist.

While looting lost cargo containers, respawning monsters, blackholes and constant ammo shortage will give you a hard time until the end of your workday. And hard this game is, make no mistake. Unforseeable but not unexpectable gravity-orientation changes and impact-shocks from incoming or breaking containers add that to the difficulty level, together with some rather unforgiving physics based controls. E.g. Death came more than once to me because my inbound velocity was too high and I was bounced back into space while already inside of my life-saving home, or I was thrown into space by another impact-shock. All this makes the learning curve of Cargo Commander quite steep and the game has some pretty frustrating moments you in store for that. But eventually, after a few hours you will get the hang of it.

Also this frantic puzzle platformer keeps you on your heels with the problem that you don't have the time to solve puzzles. There is a timer for the next wormhole to appear and rip apart the containers and the next container is already docking. So you have to be vey quick with your decision to loot or retreat (if you can that is). This Arcade-style gameplay and the grinding to fill up your supplies (esp. ammo) for levelling up may turn some people off for sure and for others it will be the incentive. But the thing is that, when you SURVIVED a working day/ work sector, it gives you a nice, grim and satisfactory feeling of accomplishment.

So if you can get past the unforgiving physics, sometimes too dark graphics and don't think this is another Rochard - give it a try.
