Aztaka review

Aztaka is a platformer and action rpg with beautiful if old fashion graphics and a unique setting. It is an indie game, and so there is lots of text(not voice acted). The rpg elements are pretty well done, though I don't think there is alot of replayability. So why only 3 stars? Because unlike other platformers I've enjoyed playing (Unepic and Crusader come to mind) you need to make a number of precised difficult jumps in this game. You're not usually timed, but if you don't make the jump (or consecutive jumps) just right, you need to start over. I know die hard plaform players will enjoy this, but for me, an rpg player, I just don't find it to be fun.

Great game. Very cool atmosphere and music. Nice RPG elements. Controls can be a little wonky, and no gamepad support does somewhat hinder it, but overall a very pleasant experience. Highly recommend.

I do like the art direction with this one but gameplay feels rushed. Controls are clunky, combat is a bit dull, levels and enemies get a bit repetetive at times.

It features many a flaws and bugs too.

Worth your money and time though as it has a certain charm to it. And a bit on the cheap side.

Oh, Aztaka.

Aztaka is a strange beast. It prowls the waters of gaming, armed with mediocre skills, but beautiful looks.

Indeed, each and every screen in Aztaka is something to stare it, each enemy a wonder to battle. The music is also very good at creating the game's atmosphere further.

It is a shame then, that the weakest part of Aztaka isthe gameplay itself. For starters, it features a bit of a slow, well, start. With little-to-no special abilities, you must resort to stabbing enemies repeatedly with your toothpick of a spear. Sometimes, combat feels a bit clunky and picking up essence can get a bit tedious at times.

However, despite all these flaws, Aztaka is a good game. Once you unlock some of the more interesting abilities, once you master the at-times clunky controls. Then, you will have lots of fun.

I hated the graphics right off the bat and thought that they looked almost highschoolish but once I got over the general look of the game I realized that there was a pretty decent game underneath. It is buggy however so beware.

Aztaka is a fun platformer with some nice RPG elements and beautiful graphics. The controls can be a little buggy and movement sluggish at times, but the story is decent and largely makes up for many of the downfalls. It reminds me a bit of the early Prince of Persia games.

A fun action-explorer.

Aztaka is a wonderful little RPG-action-adventure game. It is simple to pick up and learn but can be a challenge (a fun one) to master. Constant exploration and discovery makes this game a joy to experience.

This is a nice game to play, but it has a lot of bugs. Falling of the map in to a black hole, happens quit a lot. And you have to hope, that you dont have to restart the game, otherwise you have lost some progress.

not what i hoped for

i WANTED to like this game i really did! sadly the whole experience is destroyed by clunky controls. if they had JUST ironed the controls out so i felt natural playing it with a 360 controller it would have gotten 4 stars no problem.. as it stands it is just an annoying game.

This game is good. It's simple and easy to learn and master. The level design is interesting and the graphics are simply yet nice.

Strange and original.

RPG-platformers are rare enough, but Aztaka combines this with a focus on strange abilities and powers that resembles few other games. The game is a process of constantly discovering new things, encountering new and interesting enemies, and learning new spells.

Unfortunately, it does have some flaws. The level design is often somewhat annoyingly repetitive; you'll have to fight the same enemies many times, which is common in both RPGs and platformers but somehow becomes more annoying in this combination of the two, perhaps because the levels aren't laid out in a way that makes these repetitive encounters interesting. Additionally, it isn't bug-free; the first time I played it, I encountered a showstopper bug that prevented me from getting some magical essence that I needed to proceed -- and when I tried to re-enter an old area where I thought I could get it again, I found myself stuck, since the game hadn't anticipated that I would return there.

But despite these problems, the game is polished overall, and extremely fun to play.

Great and simple game. The gameplay is easy to learn and master, but the different levels/chapters are still challenging. The graphics are nice for an indie game. The story isn't too bad either. The price of 10 eur is not cheap, but not too bad either, with the content in mind.

Aztaka is a fascinating game, unique in visual focus and appeal yet slightly lacking in gameplay and rather buggy.

The game is a visual feast, with lush 2d artwork representing the various realms of ancient Mesoamerica. The platforming is tricky at first, but after you get used to it it's much easier. Combat is okay, but some enemies are repetitious.

The unfortunate side of this game is the bugs; it crashed to desktop about six times while I was playing.

Still, if you want a visually compelling "light" game experience, this is a good candidate.

Aztaka deserves much praise for standing out and being just a bit different then its counterparts. The game's amazing music and lush scenery belie its indie development.

Gameplay is simple: collect spirits, avoid or defeat the various enemies out to slaughter you, and work through a variety of quests in order to retrieve that which was lost or stolen. Expect to invest about ten hours into the game, hunting through maps and peeking into corners.

Aztaka is a game that seems to get little fanfare, but deserves greater attention because of it excellent musical score, spot on controls, and engaging game play.

The game is a side-scrolling adventure/rpg game where you travel from location to location searching for items, fighting various types of hostile plants and creatures, while seeking to fulfill your quest.

The game takes place in an Aztec style setting and the in-game backgrounds bring this setting to life. There are little touches to the backgrounds that appear to be layered as you can see areas you have traveled fall into the background as you enter new areas.

Also, the music is simply wonderful and fits the style and atmosphere of the game completely. You can perform various actions and spells and the game teaches you how to use the interface as you play, so there is no real wondering what to do in the game. It is not always easy to find what you need or where to go, but that is what makes the game enjoyable as a side-scroller. To know it will take a bit of hunting for the right object or area is part of the adventure/rpg game style.

Overall, Aztaka is an excellent game from an independent developer that is DRM free. At a cost just under $15.00 it is a title that is worth checking out and seeing how well you fare in the world of Aztaka.

Aztaka... An indie game with a fair storyline and fine graphics. It's got what it takes to provide an awesome game experience, a bit puzzly time to time, which is a big + to me.

You jump, climb and crawl through some really well designed levels, there are side quests and many items to get.

I gave the game a 5 cause I am really into these "casual" games, even though I played for 8 hours straight yesterday. It's got that little something pushing you onward and keeping you from giving up.

What I find good is:

-Graphics, not bad not good, very well done.

-Descent amount of items and spells.

-How the game works, sometimes it need you to use mouse and buttons simultaneously, draw something to you hero while at the same time having a hard time jumping and attacking monsters. Might sound cheesy but I've played WoW, Guild Wars, FPS games and other. This is mind challenging.

-Length, I like games that aren't too long.

-Quests, they kinda fit in.

-Price, I got it for about 9€, here on gamersgate and its well worth if you like this kind of games.

And a few "bad" things:

-Bugs, some bugs making you drop through levels and end up on another stage is common, they are working on patches to fix it.

-System Requirements, there are barely any options to fix graphics and the game tends to eat a fair amount of RAM. It runs and loads very smooth on my Dualcore, 4GB ram and 8800gt so any newer will have NO problem, it had some stuttering running native on my laptop with 1GB of RAM, Intel Celeron @1.7GHz and intel gma 950 (I think that's the correct name).

Buy this game if you like platform/action&rpg. Or if you need to kill a weekend.
