Error "This is a 16-bit application" when trying to install a game
Posted by Michael (Psyringe) on 16 November 2012 12:28 PM

This error can only appear if you have a 64-bit version of Windows.

In some (very few) cases, with very old games, the game's installer might indeed be incompatble with 64-bit systems. If so, then this mentioned in the game's system requirements, on the product page in the shop.

In most cases, however, this error indicates that either your download was corrupted, or that some antivirus or firewall software interferes with the installation. Also, this error is often preceded by download problems, such as multiple "Error 216: End of stream" messages.

So far, all users who experienced this issue could work around it by booting their Windows into "Safe mode with networking", and start a fresh new download and installation.

We are currently investigating what is causing the error. If you are experiencing it, please tell support your hardware specs and the type of your security software. Currently, all people who reported this problem were using Eset security solutions, but this could be a coincidence, it's too early to tell.
