Gamersgate refuses to accept Visa Gift Card

By Roberttitus posted 2nd Jan 2012

I have tried both the Moneybooker & Paypal option but it just refuses to take it. I have registered the card & I know I have enough money to cover my purchase. I have used the card on both ebay & steam but the site just gives me the big middle finger when I try to use it here. I emailed support but they have ignored my problem, so can somebody please tell me what to do?

By Roberttitus posted 2nd Jan 2012

Because Steam doesn't have the game I want....

& yes... I am 100% sure all of the info was correct.

What exactly happens when Moneybookers or Paypal refuse to take your card? Do you get an error message, and if so, what does it say exactly?

The payment could not be completed, please use another credit card or payment option. If the problem persists, contact

External error code: 10417

The GamersGate FAQ says about this error code: "Contact your bank. They have probably blocked your credit card for international tranfers due to security reasons." (link: ). If you don't have that much time, you can let a friend buy the game and gift it to you, and pay him back through other means.

Addendum: GamersGate sits in Sweden. If you are in the US, then purchases at Steam or ebay will be local transactions (and won't trigger the error message), while purchases at Gamersgate will be international (and trigger the error message). So a block for international transfers might indeed be the problem.

Addendum 2: Another possibility might be to charge your Paypal account with the necessary amount of money (login to your Paypal account and click on "Add Funds" to see how to do that), and then use the money from that account to pay for the game. Since the money transfer to Paypal is local, and Paypal itself doesn't limit international transfers once the money is on the Paypal account already, this _should_ work, but I never had that error myself and therefore can't guarantee it.

If your gift card states "Valid only in the United States" on the front, the provider has issued a Domestic Use Only card. Although your gift card will not be accepted at locations outside of the United States, it's welcome at millions of locations within the United States where Visa debit cards are accepted.

Yesterday another user reported a problem with Paypal which refused to work selectively when he tried to buy Deus Ex. Interestigly, this user had no issues when buying blue coins here. That could be a workaround for you too: if you can buy them, you can top up your blue coins account and then pay for the game with them.

I was trying to buy Blue Coins. It does say valid only in the US though... so I guess that explains it. Thanks
