Sleeping Dogs - The Year of the Snake review

By Gaymera posted 11th May

Adds an entertaining bonus story to the vanilla game, but it doesn't integrate with the original campaign. Good for about 3-4 hours, it's best played after you've finished the main storyline as it continues Wei Shan's fall from grace with the Hong Kong PD. That means snatching pickpockets, chasing carjackers, and beating the crap out of triad gangsters. Primarily though, you'll be investigating a doomsday cult led by a whacked-out guru who plans on turning Hong Kong into hell on earth.

My only complaing about this expansion is the price -- as with the rest of Sleeping Dog's available DLC packs, the amount of content isn't justified by what Square are charging. Wait for a sale before you pick this one up. Overall, a highly entertaining romp with a short lifespan.

A worth while dlc for sleeping dogs (as opposed to the majority of them), infact anything they add to this game that makes you play it longer is money well spent because it is such a joy to play. Sadly they have gone the other direction and the majority of the dlc's are for fruity dress-up outfits or things that actually make you spend LESS time enjoying the game.

This DLC is probably the best of the three story dlc packs. It contains more of everything that made this game great and i can't recommend it enough

Most content rich dlc to date. You start out as a ticket dispensing cop rising the ranks to take on a big conspiracy. It takes place after the main story so you should wait to finish the game before doing this. Best dlc so far although nightmare and zodiac are ok themselves.

Year of the Snake- new, yet familiar.

Compared to Nightmare in North Point, this dlc seems closer to the base game. Adds some extra missions and some extra unlockables if you complete the whole thing. A little on the short side though.

Personally I preferred Nightmare in North Point as I felt it was more thematically appealing, but that's just me.

Overall worth the buy if you can get it at 50% off or more.

This is a somewhat enjoyable DLC with extra missions, but none of the tasks are really different or stand out. Nightmare is a more enjoyable DLC. Also, there were a few strange bugs: people would fall from the sky or go way up for no reason. Nothing like that happened on the main game or the Nightmare DLC.

This DLC is, in my opinion, the most proper stroy-driven dlc, which continues the main game's story. Shen is now demoted to street cops, and in his blue uniform, he now has to deal with parking infractions, low level crimes, etc. This new story begins with this background, when something big is going to happen in the Chinese new years eve. As far as I observe, all things happened in the night as the story setting is. Shen needs to fight with a maniacal cult plotting multiple bomb threads. The missions covers nearly all districts of HK, so it is definitely longer than zodiac tournament and slightly longer than nightmare in north point.

Great moments are added too, such as new gears: a teargas grenade launcher and a telescopic truncheon as police gears, a boat chase with an assault rifle. The best bit is that it comes with new achievements to unlock. The conclusion is that as a story DLC it is no doubt by far the must buy.

One of the DLC packs that comes with additional missions, Year of the Snake goes beyond a few races or melee battles. Although it's not as extensive as the Zodiac Tournament, Year of the Snake is still an excellent addition to the Sleeping Dogs universe.
