World War 2 Time of Wrath review

By Trilarion posted 6th Jan 2011

At first glance this game looks like a mixture of Panzer General and Hearts of Iron, that is promising.

However it cannot keep these promises. I started the grand scenario several times and after 30 turns I finally stopped and deinstalled it. Here are the downfalls:

- Poooor AI, even worse than in PG 1. Polish, Danish or Yugoslavian troops never attacked me. I could easily round them up. French and English airplanes keep on attacking although only they loose 1 strength each time. I did not loose a single unit on level normal. This is a gamebreaker.

- Limited tactic abilities. Where is the artillery? Hard or Soft attack? Tactical or strategic bombing? Single ships that can be controlled? (Ships are only abstract in sea areas)

- Interface is ugly. In windowed mode scrolling is a pain. No way to cycle through units that have action points left. Many things not explained (what does bonus for unit properties mean?).

All in all, keep away. Even for the offered 5€ its not worth it.

A pretty good game. I've played quite a few wargames, mostly(although they may not qualify)Paradox and AGEOD titles. What I like about this title is it's simplicity and pace. The game begins in 1939, right at the onset of the war. This is nice because it immediately places you in the action and let's you focus on strategy. Production is simple, research simple, and while a few nations have some prep time before the war, most immediately get you into the action.

My favorite part is the combat. It's hex-based as most wargames are, and units don't stack (which forces a higher emphasis on strategy than just mass swarms). You can attack from a single direction or multiple directions, and that's about it. If your strength is higher than the defenders(or if on defense, vice versa)different things happen. 5:1 ratio or higher usually results in mass inflicted casualties, while few casualties of your own, anything lower and the results are worse for you. So you always want to bring as many people to a fight as possible at as high of a strength as possible. Various other factors influence combat like terrain, weather, forts, rivers, but once you learn it(like five minutes reading the manual section on combat, good manual by the way)it's simple.

If you like supremely complex games, this might be too easy. I play HoI, Victoria, Birth of America, and some old Talonsoft wargames, and I still enjoy it. If you want to just focus on strategy and combat, and have everything else pretty easy, I would recommend this game, even at full price(I got it for 6$)

This is a hex based, WWII Grand Strategy game set in Europe. If you've played Strategic Command, Commander: Europe at War, or the older Clash of Steel, then you will feel right at home with this game.

Unfortunately, too much of this game is just mediocre. The graphics are servicable (but mods can greatly improve them), the tech tree is simple and limited, plus the font size is quite small for these old eyes, but even if readable some events don't allow you to read all the info about them.

The combat system is nice and the AI decent. However, even these good aspects were marred by game ending bugs. For instance, you get an event that allows you to receive ships, and you are always allowed to build them as well. However, if you try to deploy them the game crashes. The same thing happens if you right click most anywhere most anytime.

This is a bug ridden game as released, however, the 1.8 patch addresses the most grevious problems. As patched it's an OK game, better (from my understanding) playing against another human. Three to three and a half stars patched, two as released.

It is not as complex as Hearts of Iron, on the other hand it means it is much more playable. Grafics are not something to write home about, but still if you are WW2 strategy games fan you will have much fun with this game. And for 5 euros, it is must-have!

Purchased this game while it was on sale and I am having a lot of fun with it. While not as complex as the Hearts of Iron series there is enough complexity in Time of Wrath to please the casual wargamer. I really love the fact that there is a hotseat option available as I enjoy playing multiple countries in the same game.

The overall look and feel of this game is not spectacular but it is not bland either. I think anyone who remembers the old Panzer General series will feel at home here, especially with the grand campaigns.

As a fan of the old Panzer General games I was drawn to this when I saw those old familiar hexagons. So far, at about turn 30 of 450 on the "grand campaign" I haven't been disappointed. Unit and combat wise it feels familiar and is easy to get the hang of. The diplomacy, while not too deep, is a nice touch as well.

I was wondering how well the game would handle things like the Winter War and partition of Poland. The events do give you options so it feels surprisingly natural and less constrained than I had feared.

If you're a fan of either the Panzer General games and want to relive the fun of those or HoI games and want a different, somewhat slower, experience I'd suggest picking this up. It was a steal at 7,490 blue coins.
