Supreme Commander Gold Edition review

By lDecoyl posted 12th April

This is an RTS with a grand scale and tons of content. The factions all have a very distinct feel and each have some very interesting units. Unfortunately, the sequel was a bit of a downgrade, but Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance should provide you with plenty of playtime.

This is RTS as it finest. Be a commander in a robot army that fights enemies using your wit and skills. Great singleplayer experience. One of the greatest RTS ever.

Supreme Edition of a Supreme Game

By Fred_DM posted 9th January

Supreme Commander has become a bit of a modern classic. Perhaps this has been due to a shift away from the traditional real-time strategy model towards a leaner and more tatical experience (World in Conflict being the prime example of this new kind of RTS).

Supreme Commander sticks to genre traditions. You build up a base, collect and manage resources, construct units and research new technologies leading to better units. Where Supreme Commander really stands out is in terms of scale. The game lets you command huge robotic units as well as large numbers of smaller units, including ships and aircraft. 3 playable factions, large-scale maps, hundreds of individual units on a map, singleplayer campaign and multiplayer make this a complete RTS package. This Gold Edition also includes the game's expansion Forged Alliance, providing you with an additional faction, campaign, units, etc.

Purchase this if you like traditional real-time strategy set in a science-fiction scenario.

The pinnacle of macro-oriented RTS games despite its almost 5 years of age. Forged Alliance only improves on the already excellent.

Unique, well though out and balanced resource mechanics. A lot of micro opportunities, especially for a game that is heavily macro reliant. All this together with simply excellent technical side makes a combination no RTS player should miss.

Grand Strategy done grandly in real-time

By Misterpinky posted 7th November 2012

While Supreme Commander is technically a real-time strategy game, it has an epic scope unlike anything I've ever seen. The maps are huge, the armies are massive, the factions are interesting and unique, the graphics are great, the score is excellent, and the expansion pack (Forged Alliance) cleans up many of the problems I had with the original's interface. The campaigns aren't particularly interesting or worth playing, but multiplayer is excellent, with scary-good AI and a tremendous amount of strategic depth.

So, why 5/5 stars? The lackluster campaign is a bummer, but the multiplayer is so much fun as to be worth the money, especially when you can get both Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance together for one fairly low price. It's a great buy for any strategy fan.

Supreme Commander is one of my favorite RTS games, I have spent hours playing this game with or against friends in multiplayer. The game features massive battles with good amount of units available - tanks, shields, planes, boats, artillery and also some very tough experimental units. SP might lack a bit of story, but it shouldn't hurt the overall game experience. Get ready to gather the resources, build up your army and smash the opponent.

Supreme Commander Gold includes Supreme Commander and Supreme Commander Forget Alliance, which adds new faction, units and missions. Get either gold or Supreme Commander FA only.

Supreme Commander Gold Edition review

Supreme Commander Gold Edition set the standard for RTS for a couple reasons. First of all, the game is run based on projectile physics . This means that battles do not use scripted firing or dice rolls to decide the outcome. Every unit in the game calculates things such as speed, arc, and distance when firing, which in turn means that proper micro-management can allow one to dodge incoming fire to some extent. Second, is the modding community. It was very easy to go online and download anything from a custom map, to new units, to total rehauls of Total Annihilation online, thus significantly extending the shelf life and replayability.

This is a game for the truly devoted RTS fans, as it has a very steep learning curve. Imagine the strategic depth of the Civ series, combined with the fast pace multiplayer action of StarCraft, and throw in some outstanding graphics and map design. Well worth giving a shot, especially with the drop in price!!!

A must for any old school RTS fanatic. Doubly so for those that remember the old classic total Annihilation. Contains both the original game and the expansion of the finest hard-core old school base building RTS in years. If you enjoy methodical base building in between massive battles in attack and defense with enormous amounts of units, look no further! Activates on Steam as well as an added bonus!

Supreme Commander is an excellent RTS game that offers battles at an unprecedented scope. The battlefield is hundreds of miles across and can suit up to 1000 units per player. 10/10

A game that keeps you going and going though out the game. Great Type of RTS, I say type as because its a bit different then normal RTS aka starcraft etc... lots of stuff going on all the time. perfect game all around

Why buy the original game or the expansion if you can have them both in one go? The expansion is stand-alone, so you won't be needing the original game, but still it's a nice addition to your collection. Supreme Commander is not just an ordinary RTS, but a massive one. Send hundreds of your troops towards the hundreds of your enemy in a truely epic fight. Each match takes a long time to finish. And it has a very good single player too!

Very tough learning curve but worth it, not for micro-intensive ala Starcraft 2, but TONS of units on the map on a really grand scale.

Lost my retails copy years ago and lucky enough, it pops up on the daily deal. Btw, can be activated on Steam, just FYI. :)

The best package in the series, SCGE gives you the original SC game and it's standalone expansion pack, for the best grand-scale RTS experience since TA. Even with Supreme Commander 2 out, this is the one you should buy.

Real Time Strategy on a grand scale. Now a classic, the first Supreme Commander evokes the basic DNA of the genre and attempts to take it to the next level.

Though perhaps lacking the 'atmosphere' and story that it's competitors offer, SupCom provides a solid multiplayer experiance that was well supported and balanced by the developers, and which is home to a number of interesting and great mods.

The Gold edition is packed with the standalone Forged Allaince expansion pack, which extends the campaign and adds a fourth race. Also fixing several mechanics problems from the first release.

Great value for moeny and well worth playing.

Spiritual descendant of Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander is a real time strat that improves and refines the RTS genre. But I was left wanting, most of the action is played while zoomed out and the while there are generally many units in a battle they are so small it takes away any sort of connection to the fighting. I would easily recommend Supreme Commander to anyone, but don't expect perfection.

There are many RTS games out there. Starcraft 2, Dawn of War series, Company of Heroes, and Command&Conquer series to just name a few. "Why should I get this?", you might ask. Well, if you prefer a RTS game that focuses on micro/tactics rather than macro/strategy, then this game isn't for you. But, if you like the idea of commanding hundreds of units on a HUGE map, you will definitely love this.

Beware: this game has a pretty big learning curve. Not only are there tons of units and buildings to get yourselves familiarised with, but this game's economy is quite unique and a bit difficult to manage until you get a hang of it.

Conclusion:

Story: N/A (I haven't played the campaign yet and I probably never will.)

Gameplay: 5/5 (Hundreds of units on huge maps. Every unit can be countered, even nukes!)

Graphics: 4/5 (It's not as pretty as, say, Dawn of War 2 or Starcraft 2, but it still looks pretty good in 2011.)

Audio: 3/5 (Great music, but sounds of explosions and gunfire aren't particularly great. They aren't bad though.)

System Requirement: You'll need a powerful PC if you want to play on the largest maps with max pop cap.
