GAME SUMMARY

Depths of Peril
Bundle

Rating: 4.8 (4 votes cast)

Depths of Peril is a single player action RPG (role-playing game) with strong strategy elements. You play as a faction leader protecting the barbarian city, Jorvik, by destroying threatening monsters and completing quests. At the same time, you compete with rival factions to see who will rule the city. Barbarians choose their leaders by fighting to the death!

As a faction leader, you must deal with rival factions through diplomacy, trade, and in time, war. Between battles and raids against other barbarian factions, you build the most powerful faction possible, to withstand your enemies. Building the power of a faction involves exploring a fantasy world, slaying dangerous monsters, solving quests for the city, avoiding deadly traps, and plundering loot to share within your faction.

But in this world, actions actually have consequences, so take care. Annoying the powerful and aggressive Legion of Fear faction will cause them to declare war and destroy you. Ignored Orc uprisings in the Black Forest will cause even more trouble. Protect ally covenants that are being raided, because friends are hard to come by.

  • Unique blend of action RPG with strategy elements
  • Leader of one warring faction fighting for supremacy
  • Must navigate relationships with enemy factions using diplomacy, trade, war,
    and raids
  • Real and hard consequences from a living world
  • Breathing, evolving world
  • A deep wellspring of history (40+ short stories, 60,000+ words)
  • Random, seamless world

A Diablo-esque game worth playing

By dalalphabet posted 8th March

Depths of Peril is at its heart a Diablo-esque action RPG, with the normal expected elements: classes, talents, an overworld with dungeons, and a town in which you speak to NPCs and get quests. But far from being just another mindless clone, this game stands out from the crowd with its own unique gameplay.

You play as a barbarian clan leader seeking to unite a town full of barbarian clans. You can ally with or destroy your opponents in any combination you desire, the rewards for which vary. Your base is situated in town and you can recruit NPC members to your clan through questing or exploration (some willing NPCs are just waiting in the wilderness to be found, and your competition may reach and recruit them before you, so exploration is definitely rewarded) and you may choose any of these clan members to accompany you on your adventures, or even adventure with a friendly rival clan member.

Clan influence is rewarded through killing and quest completion, and the town is constantly evolving with or without you: a thief may run rampant through the town, taking items from the NPCs, NPCs may become lost in the wild and require rescue, and the NPCs seem to find an endless number of tasks with which to provide you, different each time you play. Uniting one village will send you on to the next, while keeping your clan roster, your levels (to a maximum of 100), and anything you are carrying or have stashed away.

I've never been big on replaying games, content once a story is over to move on, even if a game has multiple potential endings, but this game has me coming back for more almost every day, being definitely one of the most enjoyable games over the long term that I have played in a long time. I could fill pages with the insane number of features and amount of detail that has gone into this game, but suffice to say it's well worth its price (and if you need further convincing, the demo is full featured as far as I could tell and allows you to play to level 6.)
