Crusader Kings Complete
Bundle

Rating: 4.2 (928 votes cast)

Includes Crusader Kings and Crusader Kings Deus Vult

Crusader Kings is a strategy game based on the Europa Universalis engine that focuses on the feudal kingdoms of medieval Europe in the time period of 1066 to 1419 A.D. The map is limited to Europe, stretching roughly to the Urals in the east and including parts of Persia and the Arabian Peninsula as well as the coast of North Africa.

Unlike Europa Universalis, this game is more about prestige and wealth than traditional empire building. To the player, the honour and power of the royal dynasty are more important than the expansion of the nation’s borders (although that is of course still an important aspect of the game).

In Crusader Kings, players also have to deal with the feudal lords and bishops that rule the various provinces (which, incidentally, are at a closer scale than in EU). To retain the focus on medieval feudalism and chivalry, merchant republics like Venice, Genoa and the Hanseatic League are not playable nations; neither are the Mongol hordes nor the three Caliphates. The playable nations are limited to Christian monarchies, principalities and empires.

The goal of the game is to amass as much Prestige and Piety as possible for your dynasty. Saved games from Crusader Kings can be converted into the format of EU 2, so that a player can extend his game into the later centuries by exporting the file to his EU2 game.

  • Pausable realtime grand-strategy - based on the engine used by the award winning EU-series.
  • Unique historical setting - reenact the crusades, defend against the mongol onslaught, and form feudal nation-states in Europe. A simulation of a feudal society, as never before seen in a game, involving laws, commisions, nobles, priests, burghers and peasants as well as religious influences.
  • An evolutionary combat system - which will simulate the effect from mongolian light cavalry to the english longbowmen.
  • Saved games from Crusader Kings can be converted into the format of EU 2!
  • See your dynasty progress – get rewards from the Pope by being successful in the crusades!
  • Play all religious orders – choose between the Knight´s Templars, The Knights of St John, The Teutonic Order or the Order of Calatrava and the Order of Santiago.

Great game, first and only game I have bought here so far, it never glitches or anything, love it, can't wait until I can afford the next one!

The game play is so fun, you can go from being a small time count somewhere in the Balkans to the King of anywhere.

Paradox's classic grand strategy game bundle, the original and an expansion. Focused on Medieval European History which you manage your empire from political, diplomatic and military perspectives. The historical event is a highlight of the game.

Still A Simple Alternative To CKII

By TKB928 posted 24th March

Is Crusader Kings II too complicated? Or too taxing on your system? Or you don't want to deal with the 20-something DLCs it has? This game might be dated, but it's still a fun alternative for those who don't mind a simpler game.

The main differences are that you have far less vassals since counties are the lowest ranked holding instead of baronies and that more events are random-occurance instead of being caused by specific actions. Nevertheless, the core game is basically the same, granted not as pretty or in-depth, but not so much that it's price isn't fair. Plus there are mods that let you play as Muslims & Pagans - something that you have to pay additional money for in CKII.

Personally I like CKII better due to its increased complexity, but then again I only bought it at half off because it's not a huge advancement over this game in anything aside from graphics. So don't let its age discourage you, the original Crusader Kings is still a good game today!

This game is completely worth the $10. It has complex family ties, lots of subterfuge and even more diplomacy. It has a lot of Europa Universalis dynamics with added non-military depth.

Cons? Trading...doesn't really exist. Raising armies and engaging in military campaigns are not as fleshed out or variable as they could be.

But heck. It's a very good game. Especially for the price.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m probably not the intended audience for Crusader Kings but still, I find the lack of explanation in the game a strong negative. Because of the awesome and wonderful programming that goes on in the background, I know there must be very good reasons for being able (or not) to take actions or go to war – but I would still like to know what they are. I don’t think even hardcore RTS gamers are willing to go through so much trial and error without a little bit of feedback.

Even with that, the game is still a good game from a great team. The depth and breadth of the game make it enjoyable even if I am never sure what I am doing. I stand by my statement that beginners should stay away, but those who are experienced and willing to put up with a little trial and error should jump right in.

Complex and awesome

By rebelzeppelin posted 10th December 2012

Really in depth sim on a much smaller level than other Paradox grand-strategy games. It's a ton of fun backstab and invade other provinces - even better to share your stories with friends IRL. Surpassed by CK2 easily, but fun on the cheap!

Thrown to the wolves....

By spamb0t posted 1st November 2012

Well, this is a weird one. No tutorials included and without any help we are supposed to understand what's going on here. It's not really easy but when you do, there is fun to have here. Marrying off daughters, inheriting the throne, assassinating your neighbors. It's all well and fun but it's just not very well polished. Some more tips would be helpfun to make the game easier to learn.

Crusader Kings is, surprisingly, a lot better than mount and blade. It has it's moments where you are left aghast at how much is going on. The choices you make are mind-boggling, and help to convey a sense of adventure. Recommended for anyone.

Though old, I still come back to it, even after having the newer Crusader Kings 2. Some aspects of Crusader Kings 1 should have been kept. But play it, you will not regret it. Crusading is loads of fun.

Crusader King complete contains the base game plus the expansion 'Deus Vult' (named after the crusaders' battle cry) which adds numerous enhancements. A great game when it was released, it's hard to get the game to run on contemporary systems, and compared to it's epic sequel looks and plays very outdated. So while I can recommend the game (check out the exhausting list of mods created for it!) I'd rather tell you to get Crusader Kings 2!

A great game for the money, definitely not a game to pass up for the sequel as this one is better, in my opinion. I really recommend picking this game up (possibly even some of the community mods!) and giving it a couple hours of your time at least! A great game, and definitely one not to pass up.

I'm sorry but this game is ridiculously hard to use. There are stats all over the place, it's overly complex. And graphically it's minimalistic to put it bluntly.

It may have depth, and be a good tactical sim, but for your everyday "casual gamer" beware of this game. You'd be better off with the Total War series.

Crusader kings is not bad done for its time but there are not many games like it so its near impossible to just start playing without a tutorial.

I had a problem when i first just downloaded Crusader kings, because there where no scenarios to play.

But then tried the Deus Vult expansion and that gave me 3 scenarios so, I have not found a way to change the games video or audio options so the default had to do.

When you start a new game there are temporary gameplay options so i would recommend using the slowest gamespeed until you've have got the hang of it.

Good game with old school graphics but intense content. Play as one of the dynasties in medieval times and make plots , marriages , wars and expand the dynasty

Epic scale, epic learning curve

By Reikhardt posted 29th June 2012

A very good and worthy strategy game, but the lack of tutorial made for a very hard time to learn the game. With the help of a few forum searches, I eventually got to grips with the game which is absorbing and unique.

Game has a few interesting points but the boring and super slow paced gameplay ruins it. There are much better games around than this, so it was a total waste of time for me.

This game is really amazing if you are a history fan. It's not your regular strategy game. This game puts emphasis on kings, dukes and counts as people and their relations and interactions during the medieval age. You can only succeed in this game if you are a master of intrigue. Lies, assassinations, arranged marriages, making of alliances and breaking of alliances, this are all important parts of the medieval setting that can be experienced in the game. If you never have played a Paradox game, your first experience with the game may not be the best one, especially because the tutorial is almost non-existent and the manual doesn't manage to explain every detail of the game. But if you can overlook that you can discover this magnificent gem of a game and will have a blast while playing it.

I have to say that this isn't really my cup of tea, but it's definitely a great game if you're into this sort of thing. It's exceptionally deep and complex and fans of the genre will likely be able to spend hundreds of hours getting into it, so in that sense it's a good value. I found the graphics and interface clunky and unappealing though.

I would cautiously recommend this title on the condition that you're a fan of this type of game (I'm not).

Crusader Kings is (at least i think so) an extremely complicated game which is hard to learn and much harder to master(if possible.) After playing for around twenty-thirty minutes i still had no idea what was going on. But this type of genre in gaming is not my type of game, yet it was still disappointing because this game was developed by tale-worlds, which i think, is a very good games producer. All in all i would recommend this game to Strategy lovers who have some experience of very complicated games.

Rewarding and exciting gameplay with many open ends. Might be a bit old, but ages with style and will let you enjoy it for hours and hours.

Where Europa Universalis focuses on managing a nation and attempting to grow said nation in power and landmass, Crusader Kings focuses on the various Knightly orders you would encounter during the middle ages in Europe. Your goal here is to grow your order as prestigious and pious as you possibly can. While the game feels less micro-managementish than the Europa universalis series, Deus Vult did a valiant effort in adding a variety of exciting new functions to the game aswell as a graphical overhaul to the original game, unfortunately the UI in the game leaves alot to be wanted but by the time you let yourself get swallowed up by this game you will forget all about the poor UI and suffer from a sever case of massive Fun.

Combine this with the possibility to continue the adventures in EU2 on the same save and it is a proper winner. In my eyes it is a true masterpiece among strategy games.

This game have a different focus in comparisson with Europa Universalis/Rome. In this game you have to manage your dinasty instead of a kingdom, now the fun: you can start the game as a simple count, with only a county, and, through wars, marriages, alliances and false claim, you can ascend to duke, or even to king.

The game don't have a nice inrface or graphics in general (yes, it is old), but the fun factor is 10!

I am a big fan of strategy games and the middle ages.

Its quite open ended, but once you settle in you will be drawn towards the larger thrones.

Starting in Rogaland ending up as a vassal under the english throne before you suddenly are the king of wales and the english king after a generation or two has to succumb to you.

I've played this game more than any other game else.

However when I found out how to mod savegames it lost its charm.

A in depht grand strategy game. Its a certain must have for hardcore strategy gamers who dont care much about graphics.

The game is basicly guiding your noble dinasty through the middle ages, while increasing your

realm and micromanaging your provinces and diplomacy.

Go crusade, jihade or just conquer everything you can.

Crusader Kings Complete, well just great.

You can begin as a count and try to get power with military, diplomatic, or breeding way.

Marry the doll of a foreign duke have one son and kill the foreign count to grab the title, vassal and territories.

Or you can use military force grab title, take vassal.

Maybe one of the easier paradoxe interactive game.

But a very good old game.

Overall this game adds an interesting premise to the usual role of simply running the country and encourages you to plot against everyone around you, including family and fellow countrymen. However the graphics are not great compared to more recent games based on similar engines.

By dinofs1 posted 5th June 2011

As a fan of Paradox Interactive's other games, this one came as an interesting departure from the usual formula in that you control a single character (and his descendants), rather than an entire nation. This helps give the game a more personal feel that definitely improves the immersion. If any negatives are to be found, they are that the graphics are by know quite dated, and that the learning curve is quite steep. Don't let that scare you away though! This is definitely one of the best gems of the medieval strategy genre.

Crusader Kings Complete review

By Elessar267 posted 7th April 2011

This game still shines despite its age. For people interested in this period of history, it has a fairly accurate model of the feudal structure in Europe from the time - and the only game on the market that even tries, in my opinion. If you're coming from most other Paradox games, it does have a bit of a learning curve, because of its emphasis on dynasty over nation, but, once you understand this general, underlying theme, you begin to understand.

To me, the graphics are secondary, but they definitely show their age in this game. Obviously, Crusader Kings II's graphics will be much better. But the graphics do not, in any way, detract from the experience of this jewel of medieval strategy.

Overall, I just didn't care for this game. It had many interesting aspects and was amusing for a bit. Most of all, I hated the interface & game mechanics. I found it cumbersome & awkward, especially the combat portion. It was too slow & way too much work & too much learning curve. There was the makings of a really great game in there, but only if it were streamlined quite a bit, with better interface & documentation.

If you are a strategy game fan who is interested in early and high medieval history, appreciating an accuracy of details (like modeling actual feudal structure), "Crusader Kings" with its expansion "Deus Vult" is the only game on market that is capable to please you at a highest extent. Strongly recommended!
