Avernum 5 is an epic fantasy role-playing adventure. It is set in the world
of Avernum, an enormous series of caves far under the surface of the world.
Explore this enormous, alien environment, meet multitudes of interesting
characters, and rampage through many unique dungeons and hostile cities.

The surface world is ruled by the Empire. Its power is absolute. Its control
is unchallenged. And, as a soldier of the Empire, you have a good,
comfortable life ahead of you. But then a rebel named Dorikas tried to
assassinate the Empress, and everything went wrong for you.

The villain fled somewhere into Avernum, an underworld nation of eccentrics,
misfits, and barely civilized monsters, most of whom hate the Empire. And
that is where you are going. You must find Dorikas, while dealing with
spies, betrayal, and assassins at every turn.

The enemy is waiting for you. You will only survive his attention with the
help of these strange cave dwellers. If, of course, they don't kill you
first.

Explore a gigantic world, with hundreds of quests, multitudes of side
dungeons, and many hours of adventure. Avernum 5 has a fascinating
storyline, full of betrayal, mystery, and unexpected turns. The game
features clever enemies and dozens of interesting scripted encounters. Learn
over 50 spells and battle disciplines. Hunt for hundreds of magical items,
or find the materials to craft new, unique equipment.

Avernum V review

By Cfant posted 15th April

As others already said: graphics are oldschool, but still quite ok, as the game lives from the quite unusual setting, good story and the intense feeling of exploring a distant fantasy world. All this is fun, combat is turn based and gives you some room for tactics.

There are two big contras.

1. The game doesn't help you much if you don't know what to do (or when). Well, there is still a community which can help you with that, but

2. Combat is VERY hard. I have played many rpgs, but this is somehow frustrating. I gave up in the middle of the game, as I had to reload very often, which was not so much fun. Still I don't know, if I'm just too stupid, or the game is for hardcore players who never give up and try to find the right/best character development way, so I gave 4 stars for a dense and cool rpg-world you will find.

Please keep in mind, that the game has four difficulty-settings, so maybe it's not so bad if you start on easy from the beginning.

But don't expect a relaxed playing - it's some hard work ;)

Avernum V is a look back to the older days of cRPG's. The graphics are minimal, character interaction is nonexistant (since they are all PC's), and the game is exceptionally text heavy. There is very little help on where to go aside from journal entries, and everyone typically looks very similar. Avernum V is far from a bad game; it just isn't for everyone.

A classic isometric, turn-based RPG. Very big on story and character development, and not as much on graphics. Which is not to say the graphics are bad, just old-school. Like I said, it's an isometric RPG, which controls a lot like Diablo. Unlike DIablo, howver, Avernum is a turn-based RPG, so I suppose the better comparison would be with the early members of the Fallout series.

Really, as long as you don't mind the classic graphics, the biggest issue is the learning curve. All of SPiderweb's games are rather deep and difficult, but once you get thew hang of it the game is pretty rewarding.

Classic traditional story driven RPG. I have played part of most of the first ones and can see how people can get sucked into the Avernum series.
