X-Com Terror from the Deep review

By Penderghast posted 9th April

One of the greatest tactical games of all time goes submarine. It's pretty much UFO Defence, but with aliens that like water, apparently. If you like X-Com, you'll like this game. It's totally awesome.

Ufo Defence with new tileset

By Gummi posted 24th March

Terror from the Deep is practically just a reskin of Ufo Defence, with couple of new features.

For example; Multi level combat scenarios have been added. Which are nice, but sometimes makes a single combat take hours. It's also a bit more difficult than original Ufo Defence (Not necessarily bad).

Also you should be aware that this does not run perfectly in dosbox (at least with the predefined settings). I regularly got my graphics 'garbled' (color scheme went to magenta/black) and sounds started screeching. If you have old windows XP/98 you can expect a great experience.

Still giving it 5 stars since it's one of the great, genre defining games with unlimited replay value.

X-Com The Same game all over again

By wcrider posted 15th December 2012

X-Com terror from the deep is disappointing. After the success of the first game the studio decided to churn this out as fast as they could. It's the same game as the first one with VERY few new ideas/choices/items (and one of the things they seemed to add was bugs). There is no reason to get this if you have the first game. If you have neither, its not a bad game, I just had such high hopes after the first one.

X-Com Terror from the Deep review

A lot of people bash Terror from the Deep for it's difficulty, and it is a pretty hard game. But it's far from impossible - even on harder levels (although perhaps less funny at the very hardest one(s) where it can be more of a grind than a pleasure due to the difficulty). Still all that means is that you should play at the right difficulty for you - not necessarily the hardest available like in many modern games, where hard is the new easy and "impossible" the new normal. And once you crack this gem of a game it's one of the best ever made - like a finely polished and perfected version of UFO Enemy Unknown. Highly recommended.

Second verse, same as the first.

By Azilut posted 18th September 2012

Terror From the Deep is really more of a 'skin' for the original X-com than a true sequel - it's the same game, just with everything switched to an underwater theme. On the other hand, carbon-copying one of the best strategy games of all time isn't exactly a bad move, so if you finished X-com wanting more of the same, well, this is it!

I loved this game when it first came out. I spent weeks playing it - living on a diet of purchased cheese and tomato sandwiches, pork pies and coke. I bought it again to prepare for the new X-com and was delighted when it downloaded in about 5 minutes.

20 years is a long time in computer game terms. It showed and frankly five minutes playing was enough. It was great - 20 years ago - and that's where I will leave my memory

UFO: Enemy Unknown 1.5

By Fred_DM posted 11th April 2012

This game looks, feels and plays like its predecessor, except that it's set underwater. Consequently, it has all of the original game's strengths, making it one of the best games ever made of this type.

X-Com Terror from the Deep Recommendation

By HerrOrcman posted 5th April 2012

There's not a huge amount to say about this other than it's an updated X-Com: UFO Defense set underwater rather than above ground. This isn't a bad thing, however, since improvements have been made to the enemy AI so that the game has become even more difficult. Other than that, it's got the same basic gameplay and interface, making it very easy to go from UFO Defense to this one. Definitely well worth grabbing for fans of the original, or even for newcomers if they can put up with the high difficulty level.

This game is very similar to X-COM UFO Defense but with a different setting. I loved X-COM UFO Defense but if you were expecting alot of new features or gameplay improvements you will be disappointed. That being said if you enjoyed UFO Defense you will enjoy Terr From the Deep as well.

Its pretty much the same game as the first, with a different storyline focused on underwater aliens. Feels more like an expansion. The game is not for everyone, you must be into these kind of strategy games because you certainly won't be playin it for its graphics.

copy of my UFO Defense review, only this time it's in the oceans

With the upcoming Fraxis title, now is as good a time as any to pick up the classic X-Com titles. UFO is the first in the series of some incredibly intuitive and engrossing tactical turn based strategy. This game has it all from base and resource management, to nitty gritty on ground combat. Definitely not a title to be missed.

X-Com Terror from the Deep - often called X-com two which is fair, as it keep all that's great but adds a twist it's under water! Yes, this time the little green (and brown and purple) men are taking to the seas. All of the same game play from the first x-com is back, the sim mode and the on foot combat all return but with a sealab (or maybe seaquest) flavor. If you liked the first, you'll like the second, it's simple really. More of the same is a good thing in this case. Yes, it can seem like a mod of the first but again this isn't bad as it's x-com. The only bad part is the two part ship missions, those will kick your butt. Also this game run is DOSBOX so window 7 and vista should have no problems running this. All and all, a great game and a great continuation to a series.

A great bit of retro gaming. Although the graphics are VERY dated, don't be put off by this, Terror from the Deep is a very involving game. If you like turn based strategy games, then this, and its prequel UFO enemy Unknown, is for you.

If you liked the first, you'll like this one too. Doesn't really add too much drastically to game play or graphics. Nice addition and continuation if you enjoy the original. Worth getting for the collection for sure.

Here in Spain this was the X-com we know, with full spanish texts. If you're into graphics, easy games or games were you are guided by the nose, this clearly is not for you.

If, on the other hand, you don't mind colorist and very old graphics, and love turn-based strategy, where a bad choice can make you lose the game, then you should give this game a try. I think that it's better than UFO defence, as it has all the options of the first game, plus support in a pair of languages.

A lot of games have tried to capitalize what was great about this game and have failed. This game definitely has something...special.

The version GG is selling is 1.00; make sure to patch yours to 2.00 (or better yet, 2.1). They fix some key bugs, most important one is loot transfer in 2-part missions (in 1.00, loot WILL NOT TRANSFER from first part, making the game much harder and annoying).

Oh, the patch will not install on Win 7 64 bit (but the game will run pre- and post-patch). So if you have Win 7 64, patch the game on some other machine (I did it on my old XP laptop), and overwrite the files on Win 7 64 with the patched version.

On the bright side, GG will install a dedicated DOSBOX client for the game, so if you are afraid of old DOS games, take note - this is very easy with this install, just click the game icon and it will run.

X-Com Terror from the Deep review

By Brygun posted 23rd January 2011

This is the second of the Xcom games.

It adds new depths of challenges (pun!).

Mostly that you are now underwater. Sometimes going on land. Be sure to swap gear on your ship otherwise your water torpedoes won't help that coastal city.

There is also alot more mind control where they take over your soldiers. Wish I could tune that down.

A 4/5 with the original at 5/5

X-Com Terror from the Deep review

Well, its the same gamemechanics, the same base style, the same weapon (equivalents), the same aliens... only under water...

This is not very creative. There is no need for this game. However the aliens might be a bit more clever. But still you don't need to buy it since the under water idea is not as good as the idea of the original.

"And now, for something completely different.... IT'S! ..."

A welcome repeat of an old but great classic. Very equal to "ufo defense", but with different storyline and a sligthly larger number of items and aliens. The thing is that Ufo Defense is such a great game, that you don't feel insulted by replaying the very same thing with small differences.

The second UFO game was - and remains - in my view even better than its elder brother. Adding a new dimention, improved controls, better visuals ( while remaining XXth century's ) give it an hedge over the 1st one.

more of x-com, if you loved the first one you will like this even if it is harder, and underwater

X-Com Terror from the Deep review

By RedCommissar posted 12th July 2010

Second in the series of X-Com, it changes battlefield from the land to the sea, now we fight with harpoons and submarines, emerging to defend land cities!

Still continuing the gameplay of the original X-com, and still harboring great graphics (still for its time) but can't really complain now!

5/5, One of the best "atmosphere" games on the market!

X-Com Terror from the Deep review

By Greythorne posted 7th May 2010

After the amazing success of X-Com UFO Defence, Terror from the Deep was released shortly after, and it was exactly the same game, only underwater. Except that your soldiers couldn't swim, they could only walk on the seafloor. Except that they made it even harder to research body armour, which means a terrifying casualty rate for a long time.

Taking the original game and making it harder didn't really make for that great of a sequel.

X-Com Terror from the Deep review

By salaminizer posted 1st July 2009

Even if it's more an expansion pack than a sequel, Terror From the Deep is also a great name for a game and good game itself. Keeping the X-COM formula intact, the battles under sea are probably even scarier. The battle interface is once again outdade these days, but the game is perfectly playable. Other than that, everything is else is once again of high quality.
