The not so final frontier

Space. You'd expect Space to be huge , cold and empty. X2 obviously concentrates on the few places that are not : solar systems busrting with live, aliens ranging from kind to arrogant, from stupid to evil, from ugly to very ugly. I have been playing this game for years now, coming back to it from time to time. There are tow ways to play it : follow the script or do waht you want. Following the script is what you do the first time when you struggle to understand the basic concepts. And the time after, when you want to have the full story unfloding in front of your eyes. And probably a third and fourth time because you'll probably die in an horrible manner a couple of time before you beat the script. But the true joy is to roam space almost freely, to build a huge commercial empire or a fine trading line, to let the guns speak or to hunt those mineral abominations that keep invading you. 4 stars because it has been superseded since by X3 gold

The X series of games are probably the high-water mark for open-world space sims. The universe is effectively limitless, there are loads of places to explore, and you can work your way up from a lowly trader to a full-blown commodore with your own fleet of vessels. The main plotline isn't terribly interesting, but who plays this sort of game for the plot? The big drawback is that the learning curve on all the X titles is steep. Be willing to spend at least a few hours just to learning the basics. This isn't a game for the faint-hearted.

An incredibly deep fighting-trading-building game that will keep you engrossed for months, if you let it. When it first came out, massive system requirements meant few could play it. Now, just about any modern computer should be able to run it adequately.

The graphics are entirely acceptable. Things look like they should, and everything is instantly recognizable.

Gameplay is very, very deep. If you like micromanagement, you're in for a treat. If you don't... well, you may enjoy it, anyway, but it's not guaranteed.

The reason I rate it three stars is that there's a HUGE learning curve. This is a game that requires commitment, and a lot of free time. If you have both, though, persistence is amply rewarded.
