World War One Gold Upgrade Kit review

By Ayeshteni posted 27th July 2011

If you are looking at the Upgrade Kit that means you have had the misfortune of paying for the pre-Gold version of the game and are wondering whether you should upgrade or not. It is a devils choice to be sure, so I shall endeavour to help.

As to what the 'upgrade kit' provides then it is certainly worthy of consideration. The map is in a more easy to visualise orientation (rather than the ridiculous one beforehand, though if you prefered that one, you can keep it that way) this makes understanding the game a lot easier. There are a lot less bugs and a few additions (similar to what the developer has been providing with the many patches tht have gone into the game). So the Gold edition is certainly a hell of a lot better than 'pre-Gold'. I am actually enjoying the game for the first time since buying it over two years ago.

However, I (as you probably do) resent having to pay extra for what is little more than a rehaul patch to make it playable. Yes, the upgrade kit doesn't cost much, but it really shouldn't cost anything. Of course, the developer HAS provided a reduced cost solution for those who bought the game (rather than just releasing the Gold version itself) which does temper my resentment somewhat. I was fortunate enough for someone to have gifted me the Gold Upgrade Kit (through Gamersagate) as I was adamant I would not fork out extra money on this car-crash. However, having upgraded and patched to the latest patch, the game is finally near to it's potential. I would still resent paying for the upgrade kit, yet I can understand that it is 'worth' the hassle.

On one hand, this upgrade proves satisfactory as it enhances the game and corrects a lot of issues. On the other hand, having to buy an upgrade in order to be able to play a game you've purchased isn't exactly what I call "fair" treatment of a custiomer base.
