World War One

Rating: 2.8 (51 votes cast)

‘’Home before the leaves fall!’’ all men mobilized in August 1914 were convinced of this statement. So strong was the belief that, whatever their motherland was, this war was going to be short and victorious. However, the Austro-Serb incident at Sarajevo started an awful slaughter lasting four long and bloody years ... Will YOU be able to prevent that outcome?
At the head of your nation, either a member of the Central Powers, the Allies or Neutral, find the strategy that will lead to the most vital objective: peace without defeat.
You can choose to play as Kitchener, Joffre, Luddendorf, Clemenceau, Czar Nicholas II or Enver Pasha. Supreme Commander of Armies or Head of State, the tools for victory are lying all around you, but can you identify them in time and, next, use them to maximum efficiency? Remember, men’s lives depend on it.

Players are military and political leaders trying to lead the troops, fleets, diplomats and economy of their respective nations to victory, in the midst of some of the toughest operations during those four years of the “War to End All Wars”.
Some of the key years of campaign between 1914 and 1918 are playable via a separate scenario, on each of the Western and Eastern Fronts, as well as on the whole world.
Smaller scenarios will allow recreation of some limited theatre campaigns, while advanced ones will of course recreate the complete Grand Campaign covering the whole war from August 1914.
What-if scenarios with alternative warplans and course of events in the openings rounds of the summer of 1914 are included for alternative gameplay.

  • The game is played in alternating phases of giving orders followed by simultaneous execution, with an original three-modes turn-base resolution (see * below)
  • Easy to play, hard to master, play a scenario over a few hours or a full X-turn Grand Campaign following in Foch’s or Luddendorf's footsteps!
  • A large selection of Scenarios (10) and Campaigns (4)
  • The largest World War One map ever, with unequalled historically-flavored look and detail levels
  • 8 playable major nations, dozens of different troops, planes and ships, hundreds of military, economic, political and technological events, over 200 historical leaders with unique abilities
  • An original diplomatic system, with your ambassadors to send all over the world to alter the balance of power between the Entente (i.e. Allies) and the Central Powers
  • Organize armies, manage supply, produce munitions, recruits and new weapons, use sea and rail moves, and put the best leaders in command (if politics allows), take care of your nation’s will to fight!
  • Break the trench warfare deadlock by pursuing technological research or fighting the economic blockade
  • Play secret stratagems to influence the course of events with famous characters like Lawrence of Arabia, Mata Hari, Lenin or the Red Baron
  • Fight to reconquer lost provinces, ensure European or worldwide supremacy, or just survival of the old order: victory can be military or political, as national will, population morale and parliament all play a crucial role.
  • Playable via LAN or over the Internet in multiplayer mode
  • Dozens of fully customizable parameters to make the Great War yours for modding
  • AGEOD’s recognized dedication to historicity, realism, fun gameplay and good-looking games!

World War One review

This game was buggy at release, but AGEOD are great with patches and have done a good job improving this from its original poor state. It is a deep and complex game, modelling politics, economy, diplomacy and combat. Replayability is very high as there are multiple different warplans to adopt at the beginning of the game, and diplomacy can turn out quite differently from game to game, although still in a plausibly historical way. The difference in strategy between the opening of the war and the beginning of trench warfare is well modelled.

The high complexity means you are unlikely to enjoy this game if you are not a serious wargamer - expect one hour turns on the grand campaign - but if you are, this is a definite pick. Also, there are so many things going on in the game that there are still a few bugs and the occasional CTD, so saving often is highly recommended.

Upgrading the game with the Gold Upgrade Kit, which significantly improves the map, interface and AI, is highly recommended. Without the upgrade, you might find the map confusing as it's oriented East/West.

This game has a lot of potential, but it just falls flat on its face in most respects. The game is playable, but it quickly goes from something that sounds like it will bring you into that classic wargame boardgame feel to something that really is just mediocre.

Also, it is a computer game, why is the map stuck at such an odd angle? Down is west, left is north? It is pretty hard to get used to just that, not to mention everything else. Don't buy unless it is on a serious sale.

Very interesting game with a lot of options to alter or remake the history of world war one. As many others already stated the game's a lot of bugs, can be to the annoying bug in the tutorials, ingame bugs to the frustrating crash to desktop when you just begin to enjoy your game. Another problem is the poor optimisation of the game, I have a 'good' computer and still the game is lagging like hell for 2d sprites, which in my opinion is not normal. Fortunatly this game has been made by one of the most dedicated company (AGEOD) so this means the game will be patch up until it is made playable. I'll then wait until this time to finally enjoy a good WW1 game. It's just a shame that you have to wait for this when you paid 70CAN$.

This game is a gem in the rough. There "are" issues with the game. But it is installable and playable. Comments to the contrary are just not correct. I am playing the game completely in WEGO mode. The developer is making constant improvements and corrections to enhance and correct flaws. Support should be commended not criticized. If you are critical then wait... If you love the period and wargame genre, this game covers WW1 like never before get it now! I trust Ageod utterly to resolve any outstanding issues and provide value for your dollar.

Don't waste your money on this game unless you want to pay money to be a beta tester. It's had 3 paches in as many days! The gameplay is confusing, such as on the game map East points up (the map is rotated 90 degrees CCW). At best I would describe it as midlessly clicking and dragging icons interupted by cursing when the game simply doesn't respond to my comands. Also, my microsoft mouse does not work with this game, it's super senitive and there's nothing I can do to change it.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!

It is, at best, a BETA release. The game is unplayable and in many cases un-installable. Save your money and see if the company can release a version that has fewer issues. The concept is good; the delivery is very, very, flawed.

Terrible waste of money.

This is an outright lie. There are only four playable nations. Germany, Russia, France and Autria Hungary.
