Rating: 4.3 (54 votes cast)

War of the Roses: Kingmaker is a team based third person action game set in 15th century England. Two rival branches of the Royal House of Plantagenet - the house of Lancaster (the reds) and the house of York (the whites) – fight over the throne, and the player is thrown into the fray.

War of the Roses: Kingmaker arms players with a wide variety of arsenal and armor from the Knights Hospitaller, Gallowglass Mercenary, Winter Has Arrived, and Outside the Law updates. Three new maps and two additional gameplay modes, including the Assault mode released specifically for this version of the multiplayer action title are also included. War of the Roses: Kingmaker will separate the nobles from the rabble and put knights on the fast-track to glory, ready to fight and die for York or Lancaster – and go down in history as true heroes.

War of the Roses Kingmaker review

By Daniel Huppe posted 16th April

In my opinion better than Chivalry. Scenarios are a lot more exciting with more objectives. The environment you evolve in is larger and the experience deeper. Possibility to customize avatars. The only thing I regret is that there's not a lot of people on the servers. Most of them are unused. You always have enough people to play with, but most of time you cannot choose the scenario you want. Its also difficult to raise the maximum number of players for a scenario. Maybe its because I always play the game around 11pm. Finally, I would like scenarios with team against non player characters (computer). I hope there will be some if there's a WOTR II.

I was wondering how well the game would handle things like the Winter War and partition of Poland. The events do give you options so it feels surprisingly natural and less constrained than I had feared.

If you're a fan of the Medieval games and want to relive the fun of those or HoI games and want a different, somewhat slower, experience I'd suggest picking this up

Amazing realism!

I really love this game for beeing unique together with a few other games/mods, I really do love the genre and I think the gameplay of the game is more then excellent, the weapons have a really good kick behind them, and the Bow/Crossbows function a lot more realistic then in other games in the genre.

I would highly recommend this game!

I really did want to love this game, ever from the trailers being released, but I was left unfulfilled with this title.

This game as you already know is a team-based "FPS"-styled game themed on Medieval England.

You can unlock new weapons and armor through an XP system, XP is earned by killing and winning games online.

Graphically, the game does a good job by using the Unreal engine. Controls are tight and do well as they should. Players are plentiful, so finding a game in progress is no problem.

Unfortunately, the one thing that really lets this title down is the balance issue when it comes to them frigging horses.

It's not unusual to get into a server where the opposition spams with horses. It is fairly obvious that these should be limited to x amount per team. A recent game that manages to pull this off successfully is Natural Selection 2, where the more powerful items appear near the end game.

There is a "tutorial" system which was fine until it bugged out for me half way through.

Online there is always the question, "Chivalry or War of the Roses" ? - I dont really care for the question, but what WOTR does very well is with archery. It feels great to get a hit in and there is a sense of instant gratification. Ahhhh! If you prefer to stick swords into the enemy- WITHOUT being annoyed by horses, then I'd lean more towards Chivalry.

Pros

+ Good, well tested Unreal engine

+ Archery

+ XP system

+ Horses (if you know how to use them)

Cons

- Balance Issues

- Horses (Unbalanced)

- Hitting with swords feels a little disconnected

War of the Roses review

Im a big fan of the mount & blade series, so this was a hugely anticipated release for me.

Unfortunately it did not match my expectations. In fact it didnt even come close.

The "bandaging" feature is a fail. Mortally wounded by a pole axe, no problem il just heal

myself like the knights of old did, or not, as the case may be. Also the "summon horse out of nowhere" skill cavalry get is fail. If he is dismounted he should stay like that, or find his horse. This, coupled with only 2 repetitive game modes, no single player, and a pathetic list of weapons containing only one (useless) two handed sword that that has been nerfed to the armour penetration of a butter knife, makes a very disapointing title indeed.

For mount and blade fans only. Even then, you WILL be disapointed.
