Wings of Prey review

So far I have really enjoyed this game, the style is very impressive and the scope offered flying around the skies is great. It is more of an arcade game than a flight sim for the hardcore players, but I personally prefer that as the other ones are a bit too hardcore for me! There are a variety of planes and the difficulty settings make it more accessable for those like myself wanting to get into the genre.

From the moment I finished downloading this game it has been a non-stop battle in the skies! This is truly one of my favourite games to date. It's very realistic for me, the graphics are awesome and it's so fun to play. It's easy to get hang of the shooting, even with a keyboard and mouse you won't have any issues like with other flying games! The multi-player is still very active, I've been playing matches all day, that's also a great thing with this game. The missions are sometimes a little repetitive, but you can have a lot of fun just flying around in the planes.

Awesome game! nice graphics, scalable difficulty from arcade -> realistic -> simulator.

Activation using yuplay which really sucks. Remember to change your yuplay client settings to "window explorer" or you wont even connect to the yuplay server >=(

This game is awful arcade!

I thought that this game would offer simulation, truelike graphics (bullet holes in planes etc), a diverse selection of missions and a big battle editor. The game contained none of them.

Being a huge fan of many sims, especially flight sims, I was badly dissapointed.

In this game, you can fly many popular WW2 planes. They got bombs and rockets in addition to the guns. The game takes place in WW2 era. There is a campaing and some skirmishes + online game. Thats pretty much all... Can't think of anything good, since I feel like I just wasted money...

1/5 stars

Good for those interested in getting into flight simulators. This game is one of the few flight simulators to have actually have a playable tutorial.Other flights sims only give a 700pg manual or tutorial videos or training missions that force you to figure out what your suppose to do yourself. This game has a wealth of realism options that can drastically change the game. You can play with arcade, lifelike or on full on simulator difficulty making it a good choice for new comers and experience flight simulators fans alike. The missions are well designed and there is plenty of action. My biggest problem is the ridiculous some of the objectives might be in simulator mode. There are missions where you might have to gun down 20 planes but that's almost impossible to do in simulator mode and only in arcade mode. The production values of this game is great. The game is beautiful and has great sound effect and a solid OST by Jeremy Soule, the guy that composed the soundtrack for Guild Wars and The Elder Scrolls Series.

Flight Simulators never had a great audiance. There is quite a simple reason for that: The learning curve is to high. The first time you step into the cockpit, you immeadility must know about flaps, elevator trimming, throttle, engine mixtures, stall, etc.

Wings of Prey does not have this problem.

The game offers three difficulty settings, which do not only make your opponents smarter, but actually changes the feeling of the whole game. There is an Arcade mode, where people who never flew can kick some ass, there is Realistic, which includes a realistic flying and damage model, but has some assists (you still only have to worry about flying the plane, all the settings are done for you, and your opponents are highlighted) and Simulator, where (almost) all the assists have been turned off, and you need to look for enemies yourself. Playing in this mode can be quite hard (especially if you are fighting well camouflaged italians!), but it is very rewarding, and it is the most immersive.

The graphics look awesome. My slightly outdated rig can not run the game on the highest texture settings, so I do get some 'less-detail' textures, but only if I look for them. Everything else just looks awesome. It does not suffer from the problem common in most flight simulators, that if you impact the ground it looks like it's still 100 meters away (I am looking at YOU, Microsoft!), and that the engine is capable of rendering complete bomber formations is quite staggering (I have to take ALL of those down?). Explosions and burning engines are there, and if you fly behind a smoking plane, you will probably get oil on your windscreen, which is a nice touch.

The game features several campaigns which highlight the important air battles in History. The famous Battle of Britian is there, as well as some more and less known theatres. You will fly as American, English, and Russian pilots. The latter does not happen much and is a welcome change, however, there are unfortunately no Luftwaffe missions, which is a shame. I geuss the old Combat Flight Simulator was the only one to include them. Later, an DLC pack has been released which includes Luftwaffe missions, but for me those should have been there from the start. The game offers a solid set of single missions as well. The downside of most missions is that you can 'respawn'. When your plane is shot down, you can appear in a new one, which only affects your score. You can turn this off, but a checkpoint system would have been better in my opinion.

Mulitplayer is solid, there are some interesting game modes out there (Capturing airfields by landing on them (landing = being a sitting duck, so you have to relay on your teammates), for example), and you ahve the option of playing on any of the difficulty levels described above. However, multiplayer is a bit underpopulated right now, which will change when the game is actually released on DVD (I hope).

WIngs of Prey is a game which offers a flight simulator accasible to the masses, while featuring enough depth for the Veterans. If you ever wanted to be a pilot instead of a grunt, or if you are looking to expand your horizons if you are already a pilot, Wings of Prey is a good choice either way.

I agree with the first reviewer. On the standard installation setting for my PC (Windows 7, Intel i7, 4GB RAM, ATI 4870 500MB RAM video card) this game is smooth and has great visual appeal. There is a growing, helpful online community for the game and the developers seem responsive to feedback. We have started a Virtual Flying Corps group for it in Australia: http://www.virtualflyingcorps.com/

As the developers are Russian there is a fair orientation to their theatre of war and aircraft but also plenty of Western European action as well including the Battle of Britain, Ardennes and Sicily. A great mix of aircraft include fighters and bombers. Use Arcade to get straight into the action or increase the workload with Realistic or the other options. There is already a Luftwaffe add-on and a very P40 add-on available at very reasonable pricing. Highly recommended.

WW2 Never Looked So Good!

I am a huge fan of the simulator/arcade flight genre and this game delivers on both fronts.

Set in World War 2 this game game is all about flying, you get to fly amazing planes from World War 2 into combat, and with highly realistic combat that will make you want to come back for more.

A joystick is definitely required to get the most out of this game but it works well with game pads and the keyboard works to.

The Game is beautiful on high details(also has ultra high and super-ultra detail settings but those need more video card ram than i have), and runs liquid smooth on my machine, the sound quality is superb and it adds little things like tracers and holes that go completely through wings that make it more believable.

If you want a great flight sim or flight arcade (this game does both) pick up Wings of Prey, the only con I see in it is that it does not do anything in the pacific.
