Warlords Battlecry III

Rating: 3.9 (60 votes cast)

Warlords Battlecry III further expands the Battlecry tradition of featuring persistent RPG-like fantasy heroes with its retinue of loyal followers fighting massive battles in the Warlords' world of Etheria. It is a true sequel to Warlords Battlecry I & II, featuring many familiar races and troop-types, while also adding some new ones into the mix.

Warlords Battlecry III continue to perfect its automated feature system, greatly reducing gameplay micromanagement and quickly proving to be the holy grail of RTS games among gamers of the genre.

While being a strong RTS outright, there are also numerous activities for players to engage in between battles, such as obtaining titles and awards, trading and purchasing items & retinue members, and even an upgradeable castle to reflect your importance and influence in the world of Etheria.

Extra features included in Warlords Battlecry III are specifically geared to please the legions of previous Battlecry players, including the removal of hero and unit caps, the addition of new special abilities for high-level heroes and the creation of an intuitive hero system. All of these features, coupled with new races and hero classes, new spells and items, and new building and dragons meld to form a Real-Time Strategy game that once again raises the benchmark for other games in the genre. Warlords Battlecry III is poised to receive even greater accolades than the previous award-winning titles in the Warlords Battlecry series.

This is by far one of the best games I have ever played. It is a RPG/RTS but both are very complex. The RPG side lets you choose your character from a lot of different classes and races each having different spells, powers and units. Your character can also equip himself with items where there is rare and even set items. Also the game supports multiplayer for internet and Lan. You can play skirmish up to 6 players with or against friends or AI you can even choose what hero the AI starts with and level. You can choose random maps or make your own or play on the massive campaign that if completed will give you really good items. However the base version 1.03 is fine and has no bugs but the version offered by Gamersgate is a modded version and it is really full of bugs if Gamersgate offered the original version I would recommend it but not this one it really is almost broken.

This game was good. It was actually great. The campaign the role playing character customization. Then they came out with their latest patch and totally killed the game play. The developer said their last patch just mainly balanced the archery units in the game. I didn't use archery units that much. They messed something up because now a lot of stuff is unbalanced. When I load games for some strange reason some of my buildings are now owned by the enemy. Some of my towers will start attacking my units. I have to destroy them and build new ones. I am upset that the developers ruined this used to be great game with their latest patch. Sigh. And then they just stopped working on it. I haven't been to the multilayer rooms in a while but from what I understand they are empty for the most part now.

Great game to play on the Lan or through Hamachi for under $10. I have seen allot written about buggy play, but we have not had any problems, so I can't comment on that. We play the game on Vista (and one with Vista64, however 64 is NOT recommend in the system requirements) computers and laptops. We each use our own copy. Your mileage may vary.

The RTS portion of the game plays well, but for me it is the RPG aspect of your hero that is the most enjoyable. Really nothing new, you can customize stats and spells, but it is a proven formula for fun. After several games they become pretty powerful.

With lots of units, spells, customizable heroes, and multi-player with co-op this game is a mainstay on our LAN.

This game has good ideas like the campaign navigation mode avoiding the usual linear story.

Unfortunatelly, even with the patched version (1.03) provided by GamersGate, it is so full of bugs that it's not even playable. Ranged units that never hit, roaming units always ending up stuck in the lower right corner of the map, victory trigger unable to activate after the map is cleaned, not to mention the awful savegame system that could lose your hero definitively.

I wonder how other players could give it more than two stars.
