Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine review

warhammer is an amazing experience to any fan of the franchise, but is just an fanstastic spectacle fighter for everyone else.

IF its on sale, dont hesitate, you will have a great time with it, and the multiplayer is pretty awesome too, but it does push its DLC into your face a little too much.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine....its okay

This offering in the Warhammer series takes a different approach. You are actually in control of your character in a third person shooter kind of way...I guess its 3rd person, anyway the gameplay is pretty cool, I really enjoyed the Jet Pack and the ability to strike from above and just demolish the masses of Orks.

It's good times, if you love to just rip through hordes of enemies this game is for you. I haven't messed with the MP but I heard that it can be tough to find a game?

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine review

Summary: Interesting melee combat. Typical "See you in sequel!" story.

I never played Warhammer game series until this title, Warhammer 40000:Spacemarine.

Game delivers interesting combat system, where melee is not just about emergency knife swinging.

Melee combat is just about effective as ranged combat, and these two play nicely together.

However, if you look at just either one, they are not superb nor unique. They are just average.

But combinaton of both melee and ranged combat present you unique playing experience, which I liked most.

As to the story, player who never played Warhammer games should expect to left behind in some degree.

Who exactly is the Spacemarine? Why are they x3 times bulkier than regular imperial guards?

Something series fun know isn't quite clearly explained. But this is rather common in this kind of long seller series game.

Also ending and end boss was rather disappointment.

As I noted in very first line of this review, lot of things left unexplained for possible sequel release.

Multiplayer is still alive but it might depending on where you are living.

Probably US players should not have problem, but if you are living in Asia or Australia, expect to have high ping.

Co-op mission is fun but ridiculously difficult. At least in my experience, its highly rare to reaching final level.

Also you cannot start hosting Co-op nor versus mode by yourself, this kind of console-nized game mechanics might frustrate you.

With these all things considered, I gave 3 star to this game.

Some interesting points are here and there, also game play is above average.

But as the same time that is about it, pretty much sticks into category of "Average Action Game".

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine review

By TheWhiteRose posted 23rd March

Imagine yourself wading through knee-high stacks of green flesh, swinging a mighty chainsaw sword against your enemies, and fighting for the sake humanity. If the sound of that doesn't excite you, then you need to get your head checked. For those you that have wet your panties at thought of this, Space Marine is the perfect game if for you. If you're looking for some deeper meaning and purpose behind the carnage, then move along because this is an action it's finest form.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is a third person hack-and-slash set in the beloved Warhammer 40k sci-fi universe. It's a worthy addition to the RTS video games that the franchise is known for. The gameplay is simple and intuitive with easy to control shooting and sword fighting mechanics. The game is linear but not to it's own detriment. It uses the linearity to create a unique action game that puts you right into the boots of a Warhammer Space Marine fighting against the legions of Orks.

The campaign is fairly short, and it has it's quirks some of which can become quite grating as the game progresses.. First, the constant, low-brow British emulations of the Orks, calling out "Space Muh-reen!" over and over gets very, very old. Second, in order to regain health normally, you must engage in an extremely gratifying, point blank melee execution of a given enemy. What's wrong with it is that said execution takes several seconds, during which you are being harangued by your victim's posse of a dozen friends who also want a piece of you. So you take damage...while trying to heal damage. A proper engagement strategy should help minimize the amount frustration that occurs as a result.

A part from that the game truly delivers in all other fashions that an action game and more importantly a Warhammer game should. Brutal action, satisfying kill animations, and a fairly well developed multi-player experience really makes the game the complete package. It's game that's worth playing, and it's unfortunate that it got overlooked by many people. Take your time to demo it, and see if you like it. I am sure all you Warhammer fans and action game junkies will get a kick out of it.

P.S. I will warn you though that this game has an inordinate amount of DLC. Most of it is cosmetic, but there is a few content expansion packs that are worth looking into.

This game is game is a third person hack'n'slash/shooter. The fights are very satisfying, and the Space Marine in your control feels like a Marine should do: a moving one-man-army. The multiplayer is fun, not very deep, but a pretty good time spender. There's also 4 player co-op which i haven't tested yet, but it looks promising.

The singleplayer for this game was extremely fun, but the multiplayer I personally found frustrating, along with the community being rather small. The 'horde' mode is quite fun to play with a group of friends for a while. To sum the game up in my eyes its a good 3rd person action game set nicely in the Warhammer 40k universe that allows you to 'mindlessly' slaughter the chaos and orcs for a few hours.

A diamond yet to be cut

By ginsengsamurai posted 22nd March

I have been waiting for WH40k Space Marine since I saw a news bit on it about two and a half years ago. The initial video trailer looked fantastic and I knew this was a game I needed to get my hands on.

When it came out, I wasn't able to purchase it, so I played it at a friend's place. After playing it through, I went back to watch the trailer and noticed that the scene was completely cut out. It was a tad disappointing.

As other reviews have mentioned, the single player campaign is very linear. Besides looking for the not-so-hard-to-find audio recordings and not-so-difficult-to-get Steam achievements, there is no replay value to it.

I waited quite awhile, even asked GG if they can do a price match against D2D/Gamefly and finally they did it for one brief day a couple of days ago. Got it at $10.10. It was a perfect price for such an action packed game. I have been enjoying the multiplayer immensely and looking forward to getting the levels to get better gear. However, I really do hope Relic releases more single player campaign DLC's as at the time, it seems like such a waste to leave it as is.

Would have given this game a 5/5 if not for the somewhat clunky control (still passable) and very linear single player campaign, as well as having inconsistent visual quality through some levels.

A game where guns and combat feel heavy and are done right!

By kineticshampoo posted 21st March

This is my first foray into the Warhammer 40K universe, and I've been told that it features one of the richest universes ever put in literature. And boy were they right!

Left and right you'll find interesting things and scenes. You will feel compelled to read up on the 40K universe. Trust me!

The guns in the game feel very hard hitting and not weak at all, which is a refreshing change from most games. Two shots of your heavy bolter and you will tear apart Orcs limb from limb.

The graphics are superb and require a surprisingly small amount of hardware to run on Max.

Great game the campaign was awesome. but the multiplayer is very lacking as in it's a ghost town. the combat is very fluid and fun and the backdrop looks nice. the game is short only about 10 hours for me to finish the whole thing but it was a good experience.

A friend has it on 360, I got in on PC. Both of us are quite happy with the purchase. I have to say they did a good job localizing it to PC, you have almost complete freedom to rebind your controls and sensativity unlike most console to PC games. Control wonkyness only crops up occasionally and in predictable situations once you know of them so you can account for it. I like the fact that you can set your horizontal and vertical mouse sensativity seperately in particular, which is very handy if you're the type of person who either does lots of combat rolls (upping horizontal helps) or jets around on the Jump Pack a lot (upping vertical helps then).

SP can be summed up in 2 words, Glorious Slaughter (hence my using it as this review's title). I love the fact that the way you regain health is by doing special finishing moves.

The MP is surprisingly good as well, if overall uninspired. They pretty much just copied the good parts of CoD and Gears with little inovation but placed in an awesome setting. Still, this also means none of the bad parts, so it's kinda like cookies and cream ice-cream. It's an old standard everyone is familiar with and with really very little too it, but it's also tasty even with its simplicity. Bad news for PC players is that it uses the autolobby and matching services found on consoles, but it does a good job at least. I've only had one really badly balanced match so far and that was probably caused by a group of high level friends joining together. I prefer dealing with that sort of situation over not being able to play with my friends, so I'm not sure that's even a negative point.

One of the few inovations is very good. You can copy the loadout of the person who killed you for you next spawn, regardless of if you've unlocked weapons and perks in it or not. This goes a long way to evening the scales for the low level person fighting someone who's unlocked everything, and in a way lets you try out perks before you even have them to know if they're worth it. It's simple and effective, I can't beleive no one's done it before.

Four out of Five, Eight out of Ten, a cut above the rest. I think that's an accurate way to describe this game. It's a very competent & fun Third Person Action game, and you don't even have to be a Warhammer fan to enjoy the story or mild lore of the game. Though, the additional lore content really gives tribute to all of the loyal Warhammer fans out there.

Let's start off with some of the issues of the game:

First, the single player campaign is a bit shallow and kinda short. It only clocks in at 8 hours on hard mode for myself (though I'm a rather good player as I did net 44/60 Achievements in a single go.) The story itself is also a bit shallow since it expects you to know a lot about Warhammer to begin with.

On the flipside, it's the story isn't so bad that non-warhammer fans won't enjoy it, and like wise, this game could make you love the 40k lore.

A second negative point is the Multiplayer, it's kinda dead. While games are fun and not all that hard to find; it's a small & dedicated fan base with very little time on their hands (so only prime hours seems to find players.) I don't think this is a huge negative point as the community is rather tight nit, but it may be an issue for those of you looking for a Third Person Online-Action game with a community as large as something like Day of Defeat Source (as it's even smaller than that niche community.)

As for the positives:

Combat is fast paced, gritty, and satisfying. Voice over is solid and never really falters. Like wise, the story telling is well thought out and portrayed. Everything about the game design itself is fairly solid, as this is definitely a well crafted title, with a strong team behind it. As evident by the final product.

Visually, this game isn't incredibly demanding but it does portray the 40k universe faithfully. If not a bit "pretty." At least until more blood & guts cover your powered armor than blue paint does.

As a summary to all, this is a great game but the Multiplayer is kinda dead and the single player is short. Definitely worth at least 30 bones if you have that to spend and have been wanting a TPS or a new Warhammer game.

Space marine is the best game you can find 3rd person action nowadays, you can combine warhammer violent and brutal fights with the great engine made by THQ, its the perfect game to people addicted or not to warhammer world and a great open door to its world, recommended!

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine review

By Draczar posted 1st February

Singleplayer is awesome, theres some "slight" niggles that I have with some of the lore presented in the game but consider it's supposedly an alternate universe setting I suppose that can be overlooked.

If you want visceral and enjoyable combat then this is the game for you, it also holds not bars on challenge and you will die often if you aren't approaching each fight with a strategic mindset. Somewhat disappointed with the final boss fight, but its such a small part of the game that it can be overlooked.

Multiplayer is great, provided you can get a game. The game is split over 3 different parts with Classic matchmaking taking from different groupings as the 2 DLC map sets making it harder to get a group together. On the whole though the game is fairly well balanced once you get the hang of dodging assault marines who generally seem to go for the mace melee weapon which can 1 shot you if you aren't paying attention, fortunately that's fairly slow to swing so once you get that down you should have a pretty enjoyable experience.

Great game. A must have for every fan of Warhammer 40000 and hack & slash games. The campaing is a little short and not very difficult, but the great game mode is the new free DLC Exterminatus. Join with another 3 friends to defeat ork in 2 different maps. In addition, new DLC has been confirmed, new Exterminatus arena for Chaos Space Marine, 3 new multiplayer maps and CTF multiplayer mode.

Overall an excellent game, provides a real perspective on the Warhammer 40,000 universe. My reason for rating 4 stars tho is the relative shortness of the game, finished it on hard in about 11 hours, dying quite often alas. But once you have finished the campaign it is not really all that replayable as it is very predictable. Online gameplay is quite good and will provide sufficient replayability.

Top notch if you're a 40k fan, otherwise... well

By Ghiro posted 12th October 2011

First off this is NOT a bad game, but it's not really superb either.

The thing it does best though is the art style, both orks and space marine just look awesome and very closely resemble the tabletop miniatures, but that's only half of it almost as impressive is the background artwork, ranging from ork infested battlefields to machinarium cathedrals.

The gameplay itself is fun enough slashing through orks or obliterating them with a heavy bolter is tons of fun, but a more complex melee system would have been better imho. what really pulls the game back is the rather bland level design and rather predictable story.

The multiplayer itself is aalso a bit of a drag, while it's fun to fully customize your own space marine, the availablemodes and actual combat lack a bit of innovation.

So if you're 40k fan and always dreamed about a game with more action rather than strategy this is probably the right game for you, otherwise yoou're probably better off with the Dawn of War 2 series.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine review

By meandersson posted 23rd September 2011

After finishing the campaign, these are my thoughts.

The good

The combat. No other game can compare, it is fast and fluid and it feels good. This is the reason I preordered it after playing through the demo. I wanted more of it and the game delivered. It is an absolute joy turning Orks into a red mist with some of the heavier weapons.

The game captures the Warhammer 40k universe. The outdoor settings are grand with immense structures, weapons sound right, and the music is good and does not get repetitive.

The not quite so good

The pacing of the game is uneven; often I felt as if I was either strolling through empty hallways or wading through hordes of enemies. It would be nice to have some occasional straggler to shoot at.

With the character being heavy and unable to jump you can find yourself hindered to move by anything sticking out of the ground higher than one inch.

Combat can potentially get repetitive during longer playing sessions.

The bad

This is not a long game. I finished it in just under 10 hours (and some have done it in under 6). For a $50 game this is just slightly too short. It is also a very linear, there is no real exploration and this in combination with some breathtaking settings is disappointing.

There are plenty of in game micro cut scenes, none of them are justified. Developers, taking control away from the player just because you want to show something “cool” is a bad and a lazy way of doing it. Stop it. It is disruptive to the experience. Doing it during combat is damn near unforgivable.

Plenty of invisible walls (and one that you can’t pass until you kill some enemies), instances of press button, watch stuff happen and some badly placed check points that force you to relive cut scenes if you die. Disappointing boss fights, one ends in an unnecessary and unimaginative cut scene and the other is pure quick time events

In conclusion, I had fun. There are some very great moments in the midst of battle. Not the most engaging story created but it is fairly solid in the delivery, with a highly disappointing end boss fight.

4/5 – the combat, some great moments and the settings pushed it above a 3. The faults are not unique to this game.

Worth another play through and I am looking forward to any sequel or expansion.

Warhammer 40k Space Marine is a great game set in the amazing fictional universe of warhammer 40k, the combat style and genre does the universe justice. The campaign isn't all too long but it's long enough to keep you involved and its fun enough to be played through a second time. The multi-player is a bit like that of Call of Duty Modern Warfare's which is great but needs more polishing. Even though the multiplayer isn't that great the exterminatus dlc is coming out in October which sounds like great co-op fun and I can't wait :)

Its a good game.

It has plenty of action, but also moments where you can relax and cool the adrenaline rush.

It also has great graphics, and a nice environment with plenty of places to hide.

The things I didnt like about the game is that it was way too short.

I felt like it was all over too soon, like with so many other games these days.

And I felt like the story got buried under all the action.

Still a good game though and well worth it if you like these kinds of games.

Fast, brutal and immensely satisfying.

Probably one of the most entertaining TPS I played in recent times. The execution of the game is intense but with relaxing moments walking and taking elevators around. Guns feel solid and melee weapon is even better.

MP is a little disappointing with only 2 modes but overall entertaining value is high.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine review

As a fan of the 40K franchise for the better part of 2 decades, this is a game I was waiting for, for over 10 years. Ever since the first time I battled the demonic hordes in DOOM, I have thought "This could work with Space Marines". And so here it is. And it does not disappoint.

The game represents the weight, power and brutal determination of the Space Marine perfectly in a simple step. The first time you open up with a Boltgun you are rewarded with its glorious thunder and when the bolt impacts you can see the bolt explode inside the enemy (orks for the most part). Other weapons are less impressive. Plasma weapons are fine, but the meltagun feels like a glorified shotgun and the lascannon seems annoyingly small. Then there is the screaming lack of a flamer. It is just missing. It is sad.

Melee is nice and meaty. Flash and substance in a nice mix. While the melee-weapons get progressively more powerful the not so powerful often add something extra that the more powerful one did not possess or at least not to the same degree.

The multiplayer seems to be somewhat an example of a lot of flash but little substance. You level up and get new stuff and you can customise everything and get your nice armour and weapons but... the multiplayer itself is repetitive and seems more like a proof of concept then a fully realised game mode. The endless possibilities of a galaxy at war is not used and instead you just get to play Space Marine Vs Chaos Marine. Here is hoping that more substance will be added later. I am willing to pay.

All in all this is an excellent game. Fans of the 40K universe will love it for the faithful portrayal of Space Marines and action gamers will love it because it is a good meaty game. Where those two meet you will likely have a frothing mass of berserkers. I had fun with it and expect you will too.

Nice multiplayer to, but not the topp mark of multiplayer game really... but the game IS worth it for the singleplayer campain alone!

Ever since i played the Dawn of War games i wanted for them to make a first person, or at least third person game... One where you got right into the intense action you previously could only view from above. And my, now that they made it, they didn't disappoint.

You actually get the feeling of being in control a half a ton of pure bred killing machine, designed with only one purpose, annihilate anything that stands in the emperors way. The weight of the character, the huge guns that make HUGE holes, the fact that you don't take cover to regenerate health like every other game out there right now.. you keep the slaughter going instead to gain health. All in all they succeeded in capturing the feel of the space marine and put it into a game.

The game itself feels very polished, and certainly PC gamer approved, with lots of settings and dedication to make sure it feels right.

Very fun game. Its a game with full of action and nice Music. You really feel into the strength of the Space Marines and the mass of orks. So, the presentation is really good. You dont really have to be a Warhammer 40.000 -Fan to get fun with this game. I dont know much about the story, because iam not yet at the end of it, but so far it is build up pretty good. The Multiplayer has some value aswell. It has different classes you can choose from, which decides how you will play. For example for meele, ranged (sniper) or other ones. There is also a achievement- and ranking-system. I dunno if the multiplayer will keep for the long distance, because there seems not to be much strategy work in it. Its more go all in and get the most kills.

But if you like action games, this is worth the price for only the singleplayer.
