Warhammer 40k Dawn of War Platinum review

By radioman970 posted 8th Feb

I've played through the tutorial and working my way through the main game at this point.

One thing that surprised me about this game is how well everything has aged. Graphically it still looks excellent... if I'd change anything it would be to give the zoom out function a couple of more levels of zoom out. I guess that takes a fair amount of time to program in since the detail would get lost so new graphics would have to be incorporated for that purpose. I'm no programmer, but that's a good guess. Otherwise, the presentation of the game is top notch! Usually I'm not a fan of RTS (real time strategy), much preferring TBS (turn based strategy). But this has an amazing level of action along with it's strategy elements. This is absolutely one of those titles you buy that takes up all your time whether you mean it to or not.

I still have a TON of ways to go. It will take me years just to get through this first game. I already have DOW II waiting in the wings. Late to the party like me? Better late than never. And it works splendidly with my 7/64 PC. No problems whatsoever! Lovin' it!

Well, a classic, with no widescreen support for the first 2 games in the package, but a good old fashioned RTS with more of an emphasis on base building than squad management that DOW 2 bacame.

While DOW 2 is more polished, there is still a lot of fun to be had with the old DOW games and while on offer, represent great value for money :-)

I bought it during the sale and suffice to say, it's an entertaining RTS game with the Warhammer 40k setting. For the 1st Dawn of War and the expansion Winter Assault, you're following a storyline, while Dark Crusade lets you choose 7 races with their own storyline. Admittedly, the only differences I find is the ending cutscene of the campaign. It is still quite a fun to play through each race.

The gameplay requires you to build an army with resources by capturing points that generates resources(yup, resource) and building generators for energy/electricity. Some races have morale bar underneath the health bar that determines whether your unit will run around like a headless chicken when morale reaches zero. It's a nice addition to the standard health and power bar. If you can't kill them, break them.

All in all, if you're a RTS/Warhammer 40k fan, you should check it out.

One of the best, if not the best, RTS series ever made for the PC. The interface is pretty easy to use. There's a tutorial level available for anyone new to RTS games, but most of the elements are similar to all of the other titles in the genre - so if you're a RTS veteran, you should have no problem mastering this series. This collection is older, so the downside is that the multiplayer community is pretty much dead. Most people have moved on to DoW2: Retribution for the multiplayer feature. However, it runs great on modern low end systems (have all of my settings at max, and I'm running it on integrated graphics with no problems) and the single player campaign alone is worth playing this classic series.

The PC gaming world has long surpassed the saturation point in the field of Real-Time Strategy games. It is a known fact that for every worthwhile RTS product there are at least a dozen so-so ones that offer nothing of value to the battle-scarred veterans out there. Luckily, THQ's Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War falls to the previous category.

What does the game have on offer, then? Above all, slick playability and tons of atmosphere. The game capitalises successfully on the Warhammer lore, complete with the over-the-top tales of destruction (check out the main hero's history with his home world....) and relentless in-game mayhem. I did not know anything about the Warhammer world or the board games prior to buying this game (except for having seen a photo or two of hand-painted figures in a magazine), nor was I particularly interested in it, but I was surprised to find myself immersed in the game world in no time after I started playing. The audio helped this immensely, as the voice acting and the pompous musical score suit the already faithful-to-the-brand graphics very well.

Dawn of War is a highly enjoyable light-weight RTS, designed for gamers looking for some smooth, violent warring fun. To be sure, there are other RTS games that offer more depth in the strategy department, but Dawn of War outshines many of its rivals in sheer playability and atmosphere. Oh, one more thing - the default difficulty level is probably far too unchallenging for most players. To get the most out of the game, select the hardest level, put your helmet on and brace yourself!

This is the Dawn of War game for players seeking a good old fashioned RTS game with huge armies and base building. Compared to it, the 2nd version is more focused on squad-to-platoon-sized action, has little to no base building and a much faster action pace. The higher moddability of the original DOW also allows some excellent mods on Relic Community, including the fantastic Firestorm over Kronus (FOK) and other well-refined mods like CCM, Apocalypse etc. And yes, the Risk-style campaign of Dark Crusade is as awesome as always.

Great game for little money, if you want to play a cheap RTS game with good quality, this is the game for. I have a older notebook but games runs smoothly.

The gameplay and graphics are not perfect, but for that price it's definitely worth it.

I remember playing this game the moment it got out, and was immediately enthralled by the immersible universe of Warhammer, its story, as well as the maps, buildings and battles. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War got out in 2004. The funny part? It's still graphically impressive and continues to offer the same memorable fun as back then. The platinum edition comes with all the expansions that were created afterwards and that means a lot more buildings and units and plenty of new maps to perfect your strategic knowledge in warfare. Just a small reminder to those who haven't played this game but have Dawn of War II. In this game, as mentioned, you actually get to build, create and issue orders to a lot more units, more like a classical strategy then an action/ RPG oriented one.

Warhammer 40k Dawn of War Platinum review

Warhammer 40,000, a title thats been out for a long time now. The newest edition to the PC gaming line, the subject of this review, Dawn of war, is certain to blow you away. Like strategy games like WC3 and Starcraft? maybe some Rise of Nations or Age of Empires? Well this game tops them all by a long shot, and I'm going to explain why...

Graphics- 10/10

For a strategy game, Dawn of War retains excellent graphics. The models are well constructed, animate smoothly, and have very few quirks. Not only are there very different graphics, unlike some games (rise of nations) where all the units look extreamly similar with small changes, but every unit has a couple of fatalities they play when they kill an enemy unit. The fatalities are different and unique for each unit, are constructed well and fit smoothly against all models. Some units even have special fatalities vs. other units (like the Force commander smashing the head of the bloodthirster, as seen in the trailer). Building animations are also done well, with a smooth flowing animation, instead of a repeating one (such as WC3, where a looped animation plays and changes slightly as the building becomes more complete). The most amazing part of the graphics is the full rotating 3-d camera with zoom, giving you complete control over what you want to see. All in all, graphics are very nice, attractive, and suit the game perfectly.

Controls- 8/10

The controls are good, but defenitely not a good as they could have been. Buttons are spread out and sometimes hard to hit quickly. The ALT key that moves the camera can be very inconvenient at times, and sometimes its too much trouble to bother using. Some move binds are put far apart on the keyboard, with has led me to clicking on moves I use instead of using the hotkeys. The controls are good, but they could have been better.

Gameplay- 10/10

The best part of any (good) game- the actual playing. he gameplay in DoW is new and exciting, but nothing revolutionary. Every race is well balanced and fit together great, with multiple strategies for every one. The amount of combining units make every play unique, and unlike some games (WC3) if you want to be the best, you are not shoved down a mathmatically strongest path. You will find yourself almost endlessly constructing new ways to destroy all your foes. The only bad part about the gameplay is the short campain, but not many people buy RTS games for the campain anyway.

Total- 10/10

Dawn of War deliveres is every way you would have hoped for. The graphics and gameplay strategies with unique races will keep you coming back for more. A great, great play for any RTS fan.

I only downloaded this for the Dark Crusades game, the story line is a little out, but the game play on it's own makes this a good little game. Like the fact you play as all the factions but don't be expecting some immense plot as you won't find it. One slight thing that does annoy me is the computer seems to have no cap on units where the player has, so on certain area's your out manned before you've even had chance to get you bearings. All that said would recommend this as a fun strategy game for less than a tenner.

Warhammer 40k Dawn of War Platinum review

By darthmoocow posted 9th Jul 2010

Nope. It plays bug free for me but the background or history of the game and the whole reason for it is in my opinion ridiculous. It is basically a blood bath type thing and has no merit for being a strategy game. It is well put together, meaning no or little bugs, but the question is should it have been made. My response is nope.

When a strategy game is made and it is rated Mature apparently that means it's full of fluff and no strategy. Oblivion and Fallout 3 are better strategy games than this. You actually have to think when playing those games and they are first person shooters. The people who made this game decided it was more important to spend time developing death and blood animations rather than the element of strategy.

I have uninstalled this thing and won't be installing it again, ever. It is not a very good strategy game and frankly it's just sickening.

Dawn of War is a great game for anyone who likes RTS's. And for this price, its a sweet deal to own three titles in the Dawn of War series. It has a great campaign with a really good story for a game likes this and the skirmish's are a great way to kill an hour or two.

By Kolomaq posted 25th Oct 2009

What a Fantastic deal on such a great game. Dawn of War is by far one of my most favorite RTS games of all time. It served as a gateway for me getting into the Warhammer table top as well. Whether playing alone against the computer or with friends, it will give you endless replayability with the skirmish setting. The campaign is alot of fun too, offering unique perspectives and endings with each race. You'll be hard pressed to find a better way to spend such a small amount of money.
