Rating: 2.9 (178 votes cast)

When man was still young, before the monsters were born and when the Gods flourished, Odin, the God of wisdom, learned of the runes of Futhark. These mystical runes held a great magic power. It was only when Odin had acquired these runes that he learned of their true power. Eight of the runes had a power so heinous it could bring forth Ragnarok, the destruction of all worlds. Fearful that Loke, his treacherous blood brother would try to unleash this power, Odin decides to cast them far away.

He gives the runes to his trusted aid Ratatosk who is given the task of bringing them to Earth to hide them. But Ratatosk is attacked and killed en route, losing the magical runes. Four of the runes are lost around the world of Midgard, the other four fall into the realms of the Gods.

As a dark veil falls over both man and God, Loke discovers the location of the runes and the deadly power that they hold. He collects four fearsome, fallen champions to retrieve them, at any cost.

Odin, hearing of his kin's plan, chooses four of his own human warriors to stop Loke's dark harbingers and return the runes to him.

Hymer, a young Swedish Viking outcast by his village, Grim, a ruthless Viking on a mission to save his starving people, Tuva, a beautiful half Valkyria searching for her true past, and Thorgeir, an honourable Viking trained in the traditional way of the Vikings are the ones charged with this most dangerous duty.

Valhalla Chronicles a little hack and slash game that tries to compete with the big boys and fails. You basically click and wait for things to die, than click some more, get drops, hope it isn't bugged and you can actually equip it and click some more. There is no depth to the game and it seems like a poor draw and animated 1980s cartoon, stiff movement and even stiffer combat doesn't help it's cause. Don't get this unless you can pick it up for less than a buck, even a buck is too much. All and all, avoid unless you like hack and slash even the worst of ones.

The realms of Norse mythology set the premise for a game that claims to be a role-playing game in one sense and a classic adventure game in another. In reality, it's neither. Taking control of a hero and embarking upon quests in an attempt to save the world from Ragnarok (Armageddon in Norse mythology), is the order of the day. However, instead of engaging with Armageddon, it might be more fun trying to destroy the Valhalla Chronicles CD instead. Yes, that's how good this game is.

A flat 2D gameworld in which many of the objects you need to find are too small to see, doesn't get VC off to a good start, but the laughable dialogue trees you're given when interacting with characters confirm early suspicions that VC is not destined to become a PC Zone Classic. Further securing the game's place in the RPG hall of infamy are some massively bugged quests, a very basic hack-and-slash combat system (hold the control key, click on your opponent and watch them fight it out) and an absence of the role-playing elements alluded to both in the manual and on the official website. Oh yes, this one's a real stinker and there's no mistaking it.

Very simplistic little game. Not a lot of story present, but its good for some brainless fun. The price makes it more attractive than it would otherwise be, and I've personally gotten several hours out of it. If you're enter isometric RPGs, this one is worth a look at the low price point.

This game is quite old, has poor graphics and and is not the most fun game you can buy.

But it only costs 1 dollar, it is cheaper than a candy ! And it has its good sides too. The gameplay is quite fun once you get used to it, there is nothing like slaying a couple of jφtnar/eotens/ettins/trolls or what ever you want to call it, all by your self ! It has some puzzles and fighting, a lot of different environments as you will travel a lot.

The game is quite easy so you don't get stuck and you should be able to finish it. The first level was a bit tricky, just explore the map well and you should find the solution easily.

The interaction witht he characters is cool. You get small bits of information and you have interesting from time to time. Also if you are a Norse mytholagy and viking fan you will love the mood that is in the game.

Over all, not the best game there is but fun non the last, you will like it more if you love vikings and considering the price the game should get 5 out of 5 stars, since you will have a hard time finding another game as good as this one for just one dollar.

If you decide to buy this, have fun, because I suspect you will get your moneys worth, by a lot ! I at least did.

The reason i am giving this a high rating is because i would definitely buy this game if it was on the ipod/ipad/any mobile device. For a dollar, you could do alot worse, but this gives you a game that, although not pretty to play, gives you what you've payed for. It was fun the first half hour, but then it just got boring...

Abysmal

By stefan.ancuta posted 2nd August 2011

This game must have the worst gameplay I have ever seen. Do yourself a favor and buy a rubber band which will provide a lot more fun than this thing.

Valhalla is TERRIBLE

By DarkSoldierX posted 28th July 2011

There are better games that cost less than a dollar! This game is TERRIBLE.

The reasons why is

1. The game is incomplete, you will notice you cant even equip some items

2. There is only 1 crappy animation for the weapons, and it looks so plain silly

3. There is no variation in combat at all, its click once, wait till the enemy is dead, you don't even get to see the enemy combatants health bar!

And no thats not all, there is a million other things that are wrong too, just that it was so bad I couldn't bear play any farther.

DONT buy this game. Save up your extra bluecoins for a sale and buy a 3-5$ game/dlc

Trust me this game isn't even worth your dollar.

As others have noted, this game is a bit rough around the edges and is somewhat dated. If you can live with that, I think it has a decent story and atmosphere and is a great value for the price. If you don't want to put out the cash (and it's only 50cents-1.00 depending on if you catch it on sale or not) you can always get it with blue coins.

If you're into leveling and mechanics of an action RPG it may not be for you, however if you like story and atmosphere I would say give it a go. The price is so low there's almost no reason not to.

This game costs not much. However I don't think this it's good way to spend Your money. Game is imbalanced. Some levels are boring - You don't need to do almost everything (just run from point A in map to point B and then exit to next level).

From good side: this game has good interaction features, side-quests. Thats why I think this game can be called as Fable 0.001 mixed with Norse mythology :)

Valhalla Chronicles is a Diablo style game with four selectable characters. Unlike the grand strategy games that Paradox usually does, this game is relatively simple and can be picked up in a matter of a few minutes. There is a glaring lack of polish in this game which goes beyond dating the software. For example, there is no sound effect for death. However, the mechanics are sound and the game is fun and easy to play. I get the feeling that this was a work in progress that had the plug pulled on it before it was done. Kudos to Paradox for releasing it anyway. In the end, this is a good way to spend a dollar, but if you are looking for a cheap game to keep you interested for hours and hours, go buy the first Europa Universalis .

if you have some interest about the norselands, then this game is for you, it has an nice blend of rpg and rts in it, but dont exspect super nice graphic. But the gameplay is very good, compared to how much you spend on the game.

The experience of this RPG bassed on Europa Universalis series are very interesting, because is go to the next level with Europa Universalis. You now can play in person mode to defeat and conquer other enemies. Is a game with 7 years old, for this reason only cost 1$, don't expect good graphics but you can experience a new kind of strategy.

Worth the price tag...nothing more. Could of been better but actually feels like a rushed out game. Plays like a point and click adventure more than like an actual RPG.

Your character will be able to equip weapons and armours although I haven't notice any improvement from, let's say a leather armour and a chain mail...same amount of damage for both...Same goes for the weapons except for the last blade, which feel ironically over-powered. And don't bother trying to equip "magical" pendants...it's impossible and probably a missing feature. Most game play requires you to roam huge maps, trying to find the npc that will lead you to the next step of your quest to retrieve magic runes. There's a fair amount of dull combat and knowing who's who is THE challenge...indeed all npc look alike so you'll have to check most of them out to finally point the important one...a long and very boring task. Most of the time, objectives aren't clear and if your not careful, you can actually attack a vital npc, thus making him attack back and forcing a game reload. Other glitches may also pop-up like friendly npc becoming instant foes and the dreaded desktop crash, shipping you back to Windows...

The manual (available at http://www.replacementdocs.com/download.php?view.2968 ) talks about character statistic but this feature is not in the final product. Plus don't fiddle with the key remap...it may screw up your game...(I actually had to reinstall to fix this bug).

I actually managed to complete this excuse of a game to be rewarded with an ending up to par with the product...lame. For the price, better go with other Paradox titles like "Crown Of The North", it's more worth it...

Valhalla Chronicles is a game that lies outside of Paradox Interactive's usual genre. In that sense, it's a bit of an odd move, yet one they cannot be blamed for because developers tend to want to try and diversify.

Unfortunately, it's not a particulary good title.

Upon starting the game, you'll find yourself and some villagers under attack. A person will run up and talk to you. From there, a dialog box pops up and that is your introduction to the game's writing, which in my opinion isn't too great as you can be reading a passage and see the first two letters of a sentence capitalised for instance. Then, to fight off the enemy, you just click on a soldier once to attack and watch as your character and the enemy trade blows rather slowly. You also click to move.

Outside of this is the fact that there's an inventory where you can equip items and such. In an odd move, you cannot see the statistics of the items you can equip. You can only see theiur value when you're at a trader and that is the only indication you have as to how good an item is. Further more, your character can die in a few hits so it's not an easy game. There is no character levelling either.

However, the game is just under a pound and you cannot really grumble at that price. Also, the fact that there are quests and you can choose what to do in certain situations (what you do affects how you might go about certain things), does help make the game a bit better.

In summary: There are probably better games you can get for a pound on the site, but as the game is cheap, it's not going to put you out of pocket if you do give it a go.

graphics and sound can pass, the story is +2!

I'm a big fan of the hack-and-slash genre, and I can deal with a few bad qualities in a game so long as the action is good. But an action RPG-esque game with little to no RPG elements does very little to keep me entertained. Without the ability to level up, it just makes the grind seem tedious and pointless. You won't feel a whole lot of drive to play any further in the game. It might be extremely cheap, but shell out a few dollars more for a decent Diablo clone.

Valhalla Chronicles review

By henrylin22 posted 13th March 2010

This game is basically a diablo clone. Fans of hackn'slash MIGHT enjoy this, but there are plenty of better quality games in this genre. Still for a dollar its worth it.

Valhalla Chronicles review

By Goergyboy posted 9th January 2010

This game could be playable, if the key layout actually worked. Instead the L key which was for the minimap opened my log, and M open my minimap when it was supposed to open my character screen. I messed around with the configs, making L the log (in the settings menu so it matched what it was actually doing) C for character log and M for minimap (again so it matched what it was actually doing.) My L somehow turned into the quicksave button despite all logic and reason and I could never open up the character screen, so I don't know if that was important or not.

The beginning is also ridiculous in that you get 1 health potion and nowhere to buy more. I could upgrade my armor and weapons but once I was close to death I found no way to heal making the game impossible to continue. Even if it's for a dollar this game is terrible. However, if you can find a solution for the above problems it probably wouldn't be that bad. I may of been too generous with a 2 rating based solely on the possible potential it has.

My advice is to avoid this game.

For 50 cents, this game's truly a steal. But that is if you can bear with the simplistic gameplay and dumbed-down quests. Just after 30 minutes of gameplay, I have already arrived at Uppsala and it seems that there may be quite a bit worth exploring in the adventure. However, there is no manual, so you need to remember these tips I'd like to share: 1. right-click on NPCs and select the correct icons to attack/speak/trade, 2. drag and drop potions on your character to heal thyself, and 3. explore as much as you can - you never know what you can find.

I spent approximately 5 min playing this until I realized that I had exhausted the substance of the game. It took me half of that time to kill one "drifter" during which I just sat and watched, clicking a few extra times just to be sure that I'd targeted the right icon. Honestly, to be offered for $1 really speaks volumes about the quality of this game.

This game did left me with mixed feelings, plus are visuals imo they are really sharp and off a great atmosphere for the game. Animations where somewhat lacking though, and another problem was that there is little guidence. You yourselve have to figure out who your enimies are and where to go next

On the other hand the game offers a original worlds, a world with a beautifull viking map and mythologicall beings. This is a game that offers a setting, which who other games do, therefore, if you are a fan of Norse mythology, I would definetly recommend this. If however, you want a good rpg with well brought story, I recommend you browse through other games.

Valhalla Chronicles review

By Demorde posted 9th June 2009

Even for the price, Valhalla Chronicles is sadly lacking. While it runs fine, there is little gameplay, no direction and limited visuals. This gives an over-all disappointing.

Supposively through this game you get to see 'Viking'/Norse mythology, though I've yet to see it through the game. The presentation is quite flawed and slim, leaving much to be desired.

Overall, the only reason to grab this game is to see its somewhat artistic backgrounds, and for its price. Otherwise there are alternatives out there that are much more attractive than Valhalla Chronicles.

Valhalla Chronicles review

By tb87670 posted 29th May 2009

Well, there is a good and bad piece to this game.

The good: It runs on my 98 PC, I actually like the simple yet functional graphics and the Norse mythology behind most of the game. The price can't be beat either. Seems like a functional game with no useless extras and runs fine in XP or Win98 on varying resolutions, even widescreen 1440x900. Feels like an interactive book, not an action RPG.

The bad: No character statistics, and I still haven't figured out how to reheal after an hour of playing. It's basically a Diablo without leveling up and not as many items or options for spells. It gets sorta dull, this is basically a click and point adventure game with an emphasis on killing. Prices matches worth pretty well.

The skinny: Not the worst dollar I spent, there is a bunch of storyline to go through. The GUI needs a little work but otherwise treat it as a Nordic Point and Click adventure/Interactive book, not a Diablo-like RPG and the game is actually not bad at all. Just needs documentation to help you out.
