Underrail is an old school turn-based isometric indie role playing game that focuses on exploration and combat. It's inspired by western RPG classics such as Fallout, Arcanum, Neverwinter Nights and System Shock 2.

Story

The game is set in a distant future, when the life on the Earth’s surface has long since been made impossible and the remnants of humanity now dwell in the Underrail, a vast system of metro station-states that, it seems, are the last bastions of a fading race.
The player takes control of one of the denizens of such a station-state whose life is about to become all that much more interesting and dangerous, as our protagonist is caught amidst the conflicting factions of the Underrail as they secretly but violently struggle for the Humanity’s last gem of hope.

If you like me love the post apocalyptic genre and/or turn based rpgs, you should try this game. It has a wide variety of feats and abilities with which specialize your character, and being still in Alpha it has the probability to become even better.

Very nice RPG, somewhat fallout-like but with its own style. Also very playable already, i havent encountered any bugs so far and it feels feature-complete, you wont encounter gaping holes in the gameplay or anything. The controls and gui are intuitive, soundtrack and sounds are fitting. i think i will have a lot of fun with this one :-)

Despite being in Alpha this game is already really promising with regular updates. Looking forward to watching it progress to a fully fledged classic. If you enjoy old school RPG's then this is a great option. a fun diversion, and a bargain too.

If you were a fan of Fallout/Wasteland --- this is for you. Isometric RPG (action point, move, combat, turn based) ala Jagged Alliance. Very intriguing character trait system allows this very wide replayability, even though this is an alpha build. You can go stealth, melee, range shooter, "smart" dude, or super psi paths; or mix and match. Each style lends itself nicely to a different way to do each quest.

The crafting system is enor-mongous...... neat way to earn credits to get to the big "boomy" stuff.

At the dev forum, the dev is very much a part of the discussion ---

Verdict: at 10 bucks it is a keeper. I always have fun with the new builds.....

Underrail (Alpha) is a great RPG and in great shape for being a Alpha. There is a lot to like about this game and if you have played Fallout 1/2 and liked it then you will really love this game. I am looking forward for more updates and then the beta and final completion.

The game is still in early development but if you are a fan of the original Fallout 1 and 2 you should not miss this one. It is very good, faithful to its roots, and you will have many hours of enjoyment with it. At the current price, you cannot really go wrong. Kudos to the small development indie team, I wish them success.

Very good Fallout-like rpg in post-apo future. Many skills to advance, big maps and good AI makes this game very interesting. At this moment it is only Alpha but if final version will be as good as this version, this game will be one of the best titles of 2013.

Is it perfect? No. Is it brilliant? Quite possibly.

Underrail takes a tried and true game format such as those seen in the old-school Fallout games and more contemporary Avernum or Geneforge games and makes a great showing of itself. In an interesting post-apocalyptic setting Underrail allows the player to explore a surprisingly large game, for its alpha status, and choose from a number of paths-it is usually possible to choose between stealth and a direct assault, and if you build your character right you can do either.

It's not finished yet, but Underrail's off to a great start, and I know that I've bought games for much more money that have less content and charm than it does. I have no qualms giving it five stars even with its occasional idiosyncrasies because it's a good game from the foundation up, and while it has a while to go I have every belief that it will blossom into something spectacular.

I heard of this game from a friend, who sent me a gameplay link and I was immediately intrigued by its style. I know the term "Fallout style RPG" can be quite overused, but this is the first game that to me is a worthy successor. The fact that this is only an alpha build of the game, can only auger great things for its final iteration.

At the start of the game, you create your character, with a set number of points to spend on stats, abilities and perks, you set about refining your creation, even allowing you to have abilities for crafting armour and weapons, with you trying to choose the methods with which your character will wind up decimating their enemies, guns, crossbows, sledgehammer, grenades...so many choices, even psychic powers can be used!

Once you are finished, you character arrives in an underground rail system, here you will meet with your initial quest givers and trainers, be given a mild tutorial in shooting and some simple quests, with which to familiarise yourself with this new world.

Combat uses the points system, every action uses up a certain number of points and them its the turn of your enemies to use up their points and the turn based combat continues. Familiar to seasond Fallout players, for Fallout 3 fans, think of it like the VAT's system.

While this alpha is a fully functioning game in itself, the dev has so many ideas left to implement that will enhance a great game even further.

The graphics are crisp and clear with an isometric viewpoint and with a decent degree of interactivity with in game objects, it also has mechanical lockpicking and electronic hacking, but these are skill based as opposed to the annoying minigames you get in other similar games.

A great game as it is, but even when the game is fully released, you can import your current character into the final version of the game, so there is no excuse not to start playing straight away.

I gave the game 4 stars, because it is still in alpha stage, the final star is reserved for the full release.

Underrail (Alpha) review

A really nice Fallout-like RPG. It has everything that makes an role-playing game great: a huge world, cool and extensive character generation, turn-based combat, isometric perspective and and emphasis on exploration that rewards those that like to check every corner, every nook and cranny of the game.

The game is very stable for an alpha version, although there's a little bit of imbalance in some areas (specially with some high-powered weapons available in the few hours or minutes of gameplay), the author seems to be really open to suggestions and bug reports.

A nitpick of mine: When you are in th character generation screen, the game gives you a lot, and I mean a _LOT_ of points to distribute among your stats. This could be, in principle a good thing. But in reality I was able to maximize the point allocation in several stats. I think that the quantity of available point should be decreased.

Also: there are several misspellings in the dialogue text and descriptions, and some of the text is weird to read. Not something that bothers me too much, but I know that this is important for some people.

I've been several hours in the game, and the end still seems far far away. I really like huge worlds in my RPGs, as exploration is one of the my favorite activities in this genre of games.

Great post apocalyptic isometric rpg inspired by Fallout. The stat system and character creation is intuitive and reminiscent of Fallout's SPECIAL system, it is flexible while easy enough to understand so your character doesn't turn out useless. Enemies are varied and dangerous. The graphics are good, clean and fairly detailed, and manage give some diversity to a game that is set all underground. The atmosphere is gloomy, and the exploration is fun; it's like someone took my favorite part of Fallout 1, The Glow, and made a game out of it. The combat is tactical and exciting; often single player turn based can get tedious but in Underrail all the different weapons and abilities keep it interesting. It may say alpha release but the game already has more features than most games released these days, this is definitely one to watch, as the dev seems intent on making it even better.
