Rating: 4.6 (174 votes cast)

Unepic is a mixture of platform game, role game and joke that takes place in a huge castle of medieval fantasy. It is set in the eighty's style, but completed with the most actual features.

The hero is called Daniel, a normal guy from today: great videogame player, big lover of sci-fi movies, novice player of role games, pot-head and overall, a bit horny due to a misterious lack of success with girls. In the middle of a role game he is teleported to a castle and he thinks that he is having a massive hallucination due to any drug that their friends may poor in his beer while playing. So he decides to run his own adventure until the effect of the drug lasts.
In the castle, he will be possessed by a shadow, however this shadow cannot control him (being able only talk). The only way of the shadow to escape from the Hero’s body is by the death of the Hero, so the shadow will lie all the time giving false clues always looking for the Daniel’s death.
In the castle he will visit an oracle and find out what’s the goal of the story: to kill Harnakon, the master of the castle, and free Pure-Spirits. This story sounds typical for a role game, but during the adventure Daniel will discover that everything is not what it seems.

Very good game, uf course if you like "retro games". Feels like I'm playing an old -but great- RPG.

Some passages are a bit harder, but seriously, it's really addictive. Also, there are a lot of videogames references, which I find appreciable :)

All in all, it's for me a good game, which I recommand without hesitations.

This is a fantastic game, having a great time hunting for gear. This is one of the best "medroidvania" style games I have ever played! I like how they keep the story kinda campy and entertaining while still killing you off in some pretty fun ways, well worth the price of entry!

Unepic is a nice old-style Metroidvania game.

That means you command a character in a 2d castle filled with dangerous creatures.

You get a main quest and a series of side quests, tons of weapons and items to use, several skills that you can improve when you level up, and many different kind of enemies to fight.

You cannot raise all your skills, so you have to make choices in how you want to build your character, whether he is focusing on melee, ranged or spellcasting, or some combination of those.

There is a lot of replay value, at the highest difficulty setting the game is challenging. The graphics are a bit dated, but the game is a lot of fun.

I have to say this game was the most fun I had in years. It has great humor, funny characters, some original side quests and a lot of choices on your character build.

You are trapped in a castle and have to get out by defeating the lord of this castle. Or do you? You have a companion that constantly lies to you and tries to kill you, you get to use several different kinds of pets to fight with you. It's a great package and you will not regret buying this game.

Some find the constant stream of pop culture references irritating, I find it hilarious and it made me fall in love with this platforming Roguelike. Funny dialog and quests, challenging and hooking gameplay.

Good indie title

By Runzel posted 28th August 2012

After a few minutes into the game i was quite content with the controls and how the game evolved. The story is told via dialogues and in a slideshow manner. The overall level design is ok. Though some jumping sequences (at the ending) made me shout at my pc...

But you do not loose too much time when dying. The author implemented a good system to bring you from one location to the other, so you can explore everything everywhere, do quests or leave them for later, go back and forth and it takes just a few seconds to be back on track.

It has some vulgar humor in it that i did enjoy (though some people on the unepic forums felt disturbed by the ingame language). But this game should not be limited to the sexual references it makes. It has good boss fights with 100% retro feeling, really comical encounters and pointed remarks in the dialogues.

And a little hint for the beginner so you dont waste your time worrying too much about what to skill.

Spend your points on ONE melee weapon category, constitution and armor (As soon as you aquire an armor to meet its requirements). This is a must have. The rest is to your liking. But the later in the game you get, the more useless new acquired spells from new magic schools become. Too little situations where you could use them effectively. Start with something and stick to it. You can undo your choices later in the game.

P.S. The Ending is really cool

You will understand when you get there...

Very addictive gameplay. It has a retro style but with a lot of modern features. It is a must if you are a long time gamer, you will laugh at all the "in game" dialogues. It has been a while since I went for a "test" run of a game, and stayed playing for hours.

Surprising

I was pleasantly surprised when I started playing this game. Its actually a deep rpg. Also the game has a really great sense of humor. I found my self laughing so hard during some of the monologues with the spirit that posessed him. Great game hope that it gets more attention. Whoever created this game deserves recognition.

The simple style hides well-polished metro-vania style game that takes full advantage of the keyboard. An amazing game, witty story and engaging combat were more than what I was expecting out of this title.

Just Epic!

By joytek posted 23rd June 2012

I started the game playing the demo and was a long one. When it finished I was totally adicted to the game to buy the full version immediately and it was worth each penny.

From the graphics, the music, the gameplay and the cool light system it does his "retro" job so well you will never complain and it adds more and more to your expetations while you progress in the game.

Easy to say that this game has all the potential to become a cult indie-game and it easily surpasses more high budged games keeping you entertained till the end.

I rate Unepic 5 stars for making me laugh so loud at the ending and making me say "This is epic".

If you give this beauty a try it will be a chance for you to discover a great game and be sure that once entered in Harnakon's castle you won't leave it until the end.

Unepic only in the title

This is a very fun and well done metroidvania, it sports a very good gameplay, nice hand drawn graphics and a witty humor full of geeky references. It has clever dialogues and likable characters, it's a product of love.

Highly recommended!

Worth a look

By Sarfus posted 1st May 2012

This was a little dissapointing considering the great things I'd heard about it. The gameplay is a pretty neat mix of platformer/sorta-adventure-rpg (but very light on the rpg side). You get to choose which weapons and magic skills to specialise in, but the limited selection of effective weapons/magic options means all the "choices" are no-brainers. Also, once you've got the hang of the combat (doesn't take very long) you're pretty much sorted - the early sections of the game are by far the hardest, and the bosses are frankly lacklustre.

However, the art IS great. In my opinion anyway. Gave the game a really unique feel.

To return to my gripes, the game tries to be funny. It really, really tries. Unfortunately it just doesn't work. I mean not even a little.

Still, for an indie title it's definitely worth a look. The gameplay's pretty satisfying and the game's art and size are definitely appealing points.

I'm not usually that fond of platformers but Unepic really caught me in its net from the start.

It may have to do with the room-by-room design that I find myself far more comfortable with than the usual scrolling platformer. Not only a platformer though, Unepic also contains a valid role-playing mechanic. (though only considering loot and skills. There are no dialogue-options and no real story-choices)

This opens for the possibility to play through the game using different builds

While the game itself is competent and ambitious (~15h for me), the story is far more to the relaxed and funny side which in my mind brings a perfect balance to experience. Namedropping stuff from popular "nerd-culture" never gets old :)

All in all I consider Unepic to be one of the best indie-purchases I have made and it is well worth the asking price.

A satisfying and challenging 2D Action/Adventure game, Unepic is both an ingenious and entertaining addition to the indie game scene.

The game features a large degree of character customization and level progression, allowing a player to choose multiple combat styles throughout their adventure. At the same time, the game makes no effort to hold back on the Fourth Wall, instead taking a humorous approach to its narrative, oftentimes making references to other games via dialogue or Easter Eggs.

At its core, though, Unepic is a competent platformer with extensive exploration options, old-school combat, and a few plot twists. With its relatively low price, this game is worth the money.

Pretty much the perfect mix of a Metroidvania-ish game. Great humour and very spot on combat, fun art style, and will run on just about any computer I can imagine. Will take you around 12-15 hours to complete if you do everything, and there are many viable characte builds to make your way through the castle. Very enjoyable.

okay, so this game is a real gem. the only reason i didn't give it five stars is becuas it has some technical flaws on my new desktop that force me to restart every 5 minutes, luckily it works perfectly on my (7 year old) laptop. the game has a simple yet visually appealing design, as well as some hilarious gamer/counter culture references. after about 3 minutes i was completely hooked to the point that i really didn't care that it kept freezing on me, just because it let me re-read some of the jokes. the controls can get a little difficult to handle from time to time, but are just natural enough that i don't have to look down unless i'm using a quick key i haven't memorized yet, so no real complaints there. the basic design is exactly the same as an old school Metroid or Castlevania, which is great because those are two games that i go back to over and over again. the combat in the game is interesting and varied enough to make me want to figure it out. you have to learn the strengths of your different weapons and spells to really succeed instead of just clubbing everything with the same attack, and there is a little bit of intensity while you wait for your character to switch to an effective weapon, will i be able to stab that zombie before it reaches me? i hope so. if you like old school games, or even just love difficult reference jokes, this game is a must buy.

So far an enjoyable game! Well worth the asking price, and if you enjoy rpg games you'll most likely enjoy this one.

I haven't played through the game entirely, I've been told there's plenty of game hours and that the dev is trying to release it on steam. It seems to be humourous, but I cannot say too much on that as of yet!

This is definitely a game to pick up if you enjoy rpgs, are looking for humour, a decent length game, and don't have too much cash to spend. (tho last is not required)

Reminds me of the old Apple II games such as Aztec. Remembering where each item was and where you needed to use it without the game holding your hand everywhere. Tuff, but not impossible and definitely worth every penny.

An epic tale of a nerd in castle, what more could you ask for?

And did I mention there was an evil spirit possessing him? Yeah, go get the game.

Unepic Unbelievably Good!

The game is like Wonder Boy 2 on steroids, an excellent mix of RPG and Platform gaming that forms this cool little Coin Op style game.

Graphic's are quite and effects are nice for a 2D game and the developer's went all out creating an immersive enviroment with a top notch soundtrack that really gives the game atmosphere where needed.

A traditional RPG with loot gathering, experience leveling with upgradeable stats, spells, and potion creation which you can aquire by learning recipe's bought from vendors hidden throughout the game, i love how the different armours have indiviual appearence's and the varied use of the assortment of weapons is done well, having to use mace's to break barrels faster or cause more damage to specific creatures, Spears for longer reach etc etc.

The storyline is quite funny and has many reference's to characters from movie's and book's with plenty of gamer style humor that will make you smile. :)

The best platform game Since the Coin Op years in my opinion and a worthy RPG.

Unepic is truely EPIC!

I love this game. It combines sidescrollers with a hardcore RPG. There's a lot of character customization like any good RPG should have as well as tons of weapons, armor, spells and misc. items to find or buy. Even though the original language for this game was not English, you would never know. The humor is great as well. I'm really surprised those translated as good as they did. Normally you'll get some lost-in-translation kind of moments in the dialogue or writing, but I have yet to find one. If you've ever played Prince of Qin then you know what I mean by horrible translations.

This game is a steal at 10 bucks. I'm guessing it's quite long too. I've been playing for three days straight now and have only hit 17% of the total game.

Overall this has been the best purchase of the new year. I normally am not a fan of sidescrollers, but Terraria, Aztaka and Unepic are quickly changing the rules for what a "sidescroller" is.

Solid RPG/Platformer

By bimble posted 6th January 2012

Very enjoyable game that combines several play types. The map is huge, with the right number of shortcuts and a bit of backtracking to open new areas. The combat is a mix of easy and tough - some enemies are pushovers with the right weapons, others can overwhelm you if you aren't careful. Character customization is largely limited to gear and the weapons you focus on, but it's just enough to be interesting. Traps are varied enough to keep you on your toes. And there's some crafting too.

The story is a pleasant surprise, though certainly not complex. The dialog is littered with gaming and sci-fi/fantasy references but it's enjoyable enough even when you don't get the in-jokes.

The primary appeal of the game is going to be the map exploration and item collection, I'd say, though the humor helps too. If you enjoyed the original Metroid or Castlevania games it's a safe bet you'll like the design of Unepic. Grab the demo and give it a try.
