UFO Extraterrestrials Gold review

By ginsengsamurai posted 6th October 2012

After having the chance to play UFO 1 and 2 all those eons ago, I had the fortune of getting to know UFO Ext Gold. It doesn't give me that same "fresh off the bat epic" feeling I had once when I first played the series, but UFO Ext does bring back a lot of those memories I had when I was a kid and when I mean kid, I mean pre-2000 as a teen. ^_^

So as with the other games of the series, you get to hire your crew, gear them up and send them into crashed UFO sites to kill or capture aliens and bring back technology to be researched and built. You get to build up a base, stock it up with various types of tanks and craft and bring them along with you to intercept flying UFO's or on the ground with your crew. The graphics are smoother and cleaner than the first two games, but dated by today's standards. However, this fact shouldn't put you off, since what is the purpose of a game? To entertain and UFO Ext does exactly that.

There are some nuisances such as user interface clutter, various minor bugs and generic looking avatars for your crew members. The overall feeling is also gloomy and the colours seem monotone.

If you want a solid tactical squad game that has some role playing elements (leveling up crew members, ranking up, assigning skill points, gear them up), definitely get this one. If you ask me which of the games of the series are good? I would say DO NOT get Afterlight, Aftershock and Aftermath. Sure, they may look prettier, but they pale in comparison to the first two and UFO Ext in terms of game play.

Played the game for some weeks and have to admit that this game comes very close to the original ufo enemy unknown.... music is ok and from the fact of some bugs ( sell a building and try to sell another it crash - expect if you sell the building and go to world view and return - has surely to do with the fact that when you go into the baseview the time freeze and that two log comments can not be set on same time ....) ... and from the lesser bad bad point that you only can hire 19 people lol.... and that you can't have soldiers posted in the secundary bases .... the games gave me the feeling as the original one with better grafics .... I give it 5 stars because it cost a lot of energy from the developers to reach this level where others failed .... keep up de great job I am sure that after some updates this game would be as great as the original one ... ( at least I hope so )

UFO Extraterrestrials Gold review

This version of UFO Extraterrestrials is abysmal. The engine incorporates a stripped-down "Light" version of the (free) Bman Ease of Use mod for the original UFO Extraterrestrials as well as a couple of other popular mods, in addition to throwing in some DRM, and uses that to justify a surcharge of $9. What's worse, you can't go ahead and patch in the full Bman mod because the engine is different.

I horribly regret this purchase and am going to do everything in my power to exchange it for the original UFO Extraterrestrials. I'm willing to take the loss of the $9. It's that bad.

this is basically x-com terror from the deep.

it has just been given a graphical overhaul. there are a few anoying things like only being able to house troops in one base, one base per country. there are a few improvements like the trimming down of the micro management side of things. ships weapons no longer need ammo and soldiers are automatical re-supplyed after missions. i do find however that if im playing music in another window, the game crashes quite often on the loading screen.

over all a good game that is challenging and enjoyable

i would recommend getting the patches as it greatly reduces bugs and glitches.

The game description says it all, they took the best x-com Ufo Defense and TFFD sequel, and improved some things that did not make much sense, or were lacking.

Omg, am I so old.... I played the very first chapter of the many ufo-series when it was brand new. Sucking up my tears of sentimentalism (hehe) i found a game which really tries to put the dusty old thing into new clothes. Everything is in there and a lot more ( judging on the 2 Gig of data).

The principle of a-unit-moves-till-action-points-are exhausted is certainly my favorite thing but RTS-cracks beware.....

Damn thing does not run on my mini laptop although it (barely) meets the min. Requirements. Game itself on my regular (dated)pc runs a bit slow i feel.
