The UnderGarden

Rating: 4.2 (56 votes cast)

The UnderGarden is a casual Zen game that challenges players to explore beautiful underground caverns filled with strange life forms, sound, music and plenty of hidden secrets.

Casual gamers with an affinity towards puzzle games will enjoy The UnderGarden’s modern exploration quest filled with brain teasing games that combine state of the art 3D rendering and physics based puzzles. Players traverse large underground worlds in search of members of their musical band. The goal is to bring them together and lead them to the surface.

Along the way, players will encounter puzzles that must be solved and strange life forms that must be befriended or avoided.

Provides a truly visceral and relaxing gameplay experience that gamers will enjoy as a contrast to the frenzied action of most popular core titles.

Key features:

  • The Pick up and Play mechanics utilizes straightforward, accessible controls.
  • Puzzles are physics based, solved by placing grown “fruit” that weighs down levers, or lifts up platforms to allow access to new areas.
  • Environmental puzzles solved by growing exotic plants around the player.  The world springs to life with vibrant color and music as the player drifts past dormant seeds.
  • Serene music and audio is threaded within the game to enhance user experience.
  • Progress is driven by player’s own pace, desire to see their effect on the world, and exploration of new environments.
  • First game of its type to offer 2 player co-op play.
  • Casual Zen game design offers 20 different levels, each with a unique look.

Great, while it works...

By radioman970 posted 25th November 2011

(playing on a fully updated Windows 7 64 bit PC)

At one point the game will begin locking up no matter what I do. For a game that has so much potential to help one relieve the days stresses, this creates more stress for you instead.

An Atari failure that they have yet to fix even thought it's a somewhat newer game. A real lemon of a game on the PC that should easily be a gem instead. I paid about $4 and I'd like my money back. :(

Aquaria is a similar game, with similar features..and perhaps a bit more. It's 2D, but still quite pretty to look it. And more importantly, it works.

The UnderGarden review

By Carnival73 posted 22nd February 2011

UnderGarden would've had a lot to offer if it wasn't for the control scheme that attempts to herd the player to run out and purchase, specifically, an X-Box 360 Wired controller.

It CAN be played with mouse and keyboard and it CAN be mapped to other controllers other than just Microsoft's but they've obviously, and apparently intentionally, have offered the most reasonable control to only those whom run out and line Microsoft's pockets by purchasing one of their over-priced console controllers for a console that you don't own and don't plan on owning.

One button has turned a Zen game into an uncomfortable chore:

In order to get around UnderGarden's maps quickly, or plow through some physiques objects, a "boost" button is needed (only allowed to those with 360 controllers).

If you're playing with mouse and keyboard, boost is performed by constantly holding the left mouse button down over your character and dragging and releasing. Teamed with the fact that your character's controls are assigned to the arrow keys on the right hand side of the keyboard and cannot be remapped to WASD, they've made this uncomfortable as possible for those who dare to rebel the 360 controller.

Us other guys, whom look for alternate means, are left to mapping to a dual stick controller and thus having to perform the same actions steering the mouse cursor around with the right analogue stick.

So I highly advise straying far clear from this title if you don't also own an XBox 360 or if you don't mind shelling out extra for yet another Microsoft product and yet another controller.
