The Stalin Subway: Red Veil review

By tayfuntuna posted 27th February

My same thoughts for the original Stalin Subway remains in this game, as it is quite an interesting (and sometimes absurd with it's physics engine) shooter. Somehow the game made me keep playing for quite some time, I count it as success. If you are looking for a different FPS and not disturbed by it's almost indie-looking structure, give it a try.

Call of Stalin

This is the sequel (or stand-alone expansion) to The Stalin Subway and it looks and plays just like it. It's essentially a standard shooter set in the Stalinist Soviet Union. As such the levels are set in Moscow locations and you use WWII era Soviet weapons. So far so good.

However, the game is substandard in pretty much every way. Graphics and sound range from mediocre to outdated to horribly stale. What's worse, combat is unsatisfying because you get no feedback if you are hit, while your enemies often exhibit outlandish marksmanship. That means you may well survive an engagement with multiple enemies only to notice in shock that your health has dropped down into the single digit range. It happens frequently that a standard enemy armed with a Shpagin drains most of your health without you noticing it. This pretty much takes all the fun out of a game that relies almost exclusively on shooting as a gameplay mechanic. And as with most Eastern European and Russian productions, English translations and voice overs are passable at best, embarrassing at worst.

Not recommended. Try "You Are Empty" instead.

More 1c FPS shovelware. There are so many better games to play, I can't see myself ever coming back to this one again.

Well, it's bad. There is really no plot at all, you just have to eliminate bad Rooskies and fight your way through city and buildings. Game is pretty hard and enemies hit you pretty easy, but their AI is like potato.

The main problem is: between the date this game was released and today, we've had far better shooters come out.

The thing that got on my nerve the most was the voice acting. As it often happens with 1C, everything is poorly translated from Russian and it doesn't feel like it's adults talking. And there's a lot of talking - often during shooting phases.

Therefore, I would only recommend this game to those who are in it for the story and not the shooter.

I love the setting of the game and wish that the NYC subway or London underground had a shooter like this. The voice acting is what you would expect - poorly dubbed. The graphics are what you'd expect - so-so. The difficulty level is way too easy once you figure out how to avoid the magic bullets of your brain-dead enemies. But it is still worth getting if you can get it at a reasonable price.

A better entry in the Stalin Subway series. Still has laughably bad english voice acting and animations, but has been made somewhat more responsive and with a more even difficulty that actually makes it a pleasant if uninspired shooter. Graphically it's a bit behind the times, but the locations look nice.

Frustratingly difficult first person shooter, sequel to Stalin Subway. Limited weapon choices, silly level design, dumb AI; try this if you like the setting maybe. If not there are many other shooters out there.

I found this game incredibly difficult. I am not sure if I just suck but I died very easily so there is a steep learning curve to this game, move slowly and methodically. It doesn't really help that the enemy seems to frequently spawn directly behind you.

The Features written in Gamersgate here is nothing but a direct copy from original The Stalin Subway(SS1), NOT FOR THIS GAME, Stalin Subway Red Veil(SS2).

This is a sequel of that Stalin Subway, where you play as Gleb(hero in SS1)'s girlfriend or wife or someone.

There's VERY few weapons ingame unlike SS1, you only get 2 pistols, 2 machineguns, 2 rifles and 2 grenades. 3 weapons(except grenades) carriable at once.

Enemies' AI are dumb, tightly scripted but their accuracy and damage is more than enough to down you in few seconds.

Plus, bullets(both yours and enemy's) ricochet on metal surfaces which can easily kill you but you can't really exploit to kill things without exposing yourself.

There are almost no health/armor powerups lying around(you'll be fully healed and/or armored in beginning of some levels), so you need to hope that enemies drop some first-aid kits (and they're in random chance).

Level design is realistic...in bad ways. There aren't any directions and things so it's easy to lose your way even if those maps are linear.

There are less than 10 levels to fight through, which is thanksful.

Graphic is great even for B-class shooter. Sound is crap but I personally liked the Music used in Red Square level(I can say it's one of the hardest drive-by shooting level in FPS history. no joke!)

It's PAINFULLY hard. even on Easy difficulty you'll find yourself dead for thousand times(But I'm man enough to beat it in hard!).

Don't ever play this FPS unless you're masochistic enough to try something "seemingly impossible".
