A fun Distraction Even For Non Train Fans

By Rusty_M posted 18th April

I don't have any particular interest in trains, although I find they can be an enjoyable way to travel.

In any case, I had thought about picking this up for a long time and, recently, I did. I'm glad I did, as this is an enjoyable and relaxing game. There is some real challenge in making sure you adhere to the signals and speed limits as well as being on time and stopping in the right place.

The game appears to be quite well detailed, although I can't be sure as I'm not well versed in the subject matter. Coding appears to be a slight issue, as the game on max settings will occasionally have some severe frame-rate drops, even on high end systems. For comparison's sake, I run an i7 950 at 4GHz with a GTX570 and 18GB RAM. It runs mostly smoothly with the occasional slowdown that lasts about 5-7 seconds. It's hard to tell if this is related to scenery loading or processor load.

Anyway, if you think this is something you'd like, it really is worth a try. I like simulations in general, and really do enjoy this.

Train Simulator 2013 review

I'm no expert on trains but I don't need to be to know this is an accurate simulator. With many scenarios, trains and custom content on steam, what's not to love? This is playable with a controller and keyboard. There's not much else to say about the gameplay but the fact that you drive trains. Some scenarios can last up to a few hours or maybe even about 15 minutes. Either way the game is good and has a lot of content to keep you driving trains for a good amount of time.

Train Simulator 2013 review

It is a train driving simulator alright. It means you will sitting and doing not much else than adjusting engine rpm and brake power. Also gotta be in the right place at right time, and on the right track, which is automatic at times and sometimes not. It's somewhat more complicated to drive steam engines as the coal and water must be refilled and whatever else - I didn't master the specifics of that yet nor the signal lights, that's why I sometimes crash into other trains. Waiting to get to next station is so boring that I tend to drive past the station when it does eventually show up because loss of focus. Graphics and sounds are ok, maybe a bit heavy on FPS considering the graphics quality, at least on my system.

Train Simulator 2013 review

This is the best train simulator game on market and it should be treated like that. If you are new to series, you can drive train in simple mode which is typical arcade mode: accelerate, decelerate, reverse direction, and emergency brake. It can't be easier. For the full simulation experience, there is expert mode and hardcore players can disable HUD for the real life driving. Electric trains are easiest for driving – steam are logically the hardest. Game's scenarios are varying – from the easy one to some really hard which is good thing to appease everybody. Game is fully integrated into Steam Workshop, so there are many excellent scenarios.

Main problem of this great simulator is its engine and coding which causes some serious problems to some users. Engine is dated. Don't get me wrong – game looks great, many trains are superbly detailed, and you really have feeling that you drive train. Because engine is old it doesn't support multicore processors and neither x64 so you really need highly clocked single core CPU, but only average GPU. Especially is killing TSX. Game looks great with it on, but it just kills frame rate easily. Just look at London – Brighton route.

There are some other not so great things. If you are in route creating business, you won't be excited as creating is not easy. I don't care about it as this game is simulator in the first place. Most DLCs are expensive, but you really buy just what you like, and there are so many freeware DLCs in various sites and forums. There is no in-game tutorial which is sad as there was in 2012 version of game, but pdf manuals are very good at explaining things.

I fully recommend buying this game at GamersGate as it's almost double cheaper than in Steam [it's Steamworks game anyway], and it comes with even one more route. No excuse, really.

Train Simulator 2013 review

By Actonian posted 2nd October 2012

I have not played Train Simulator since the original when I was really young. In the days I had Windows 98. Was a really good game, trains were nice and taught me a lot about trains. Enviormental graphics were poor. I watched trailers of this before actually purchasing it, seems they have come a long way especially in the 2013 version.

I am using a new laptop with really high graphics and a lot of memory. It runs great.

Takes forever to download on steam (5 hours and I am on high speed cable). It took longer to download train simulator than it did Skyrim.

The game itself, I wish there was more locations and more trains. I guess you have to purchase add ons separate (stupid the game cost enough as it is)

The good thing about Steam and simulators- there are mods and add ons created by other users. Should not be hard to find add ons.

I find the dashboard controls and buttons graphics could still be improved- they look similar to the original train simulator (year 2000 probably).
