Great atmosphere

Its a game series i was long unaware of, but is really fun building/economy game. What is even better is the humor in tropico. And caribic rhitms are wonderfull to hear! Tropico 4 is basically T3 with some more buildings and new missions.

Tropico 3 has got great idea, player become a dictator. You don't fight with your army with other countries, you own city and you expand this. It's much better than simcity, because you have got a lot of fun when you're playing this game.

Tropico 3 is one of those "old faithfull" games, that you can always come back to somwhere down the track after you have dusted off the months of neglect and manage to have a blast! And for the megalomaniac at heart, it is a hoot. Watching all the peasants perform back breaking labor to build your cities economy, whilst you relax in your palce chomping on a fat cigar and drinking down a refreshing mojito, watching your swiss bank account grow and grow :)The only drawback is that it does become a little stale after 3,4 hours building the same city, as by that stage you would of built most everything there is to build in the Tropican world. All in all a good game, especially now that you can pick it up on the cheap.

Fun, but Tropico 1 was better

By mrmariodave posted 24th May 2012

Tropico 3 is the true long-awaited sequel to Tropico 1 with tons of new features, so it's got to be even more captivating, right? Tropico 1 got me hooked instantly, but strangely enough this game has not yet hooked me as much. Why? I don't know, maybe because of the simplicity of Tropico 1.

Recommended: Yes, because it's still very fun.

Love CBs and this is my 2nd favourite next to Children of the Nile.

Atmosphere is well implemented, graphics are beautiful, inhabitants act like 'real' little people in most ways, just the transport system in very large islands let this title down somewhat.

If you always wanted to find that inner dictator in yourself, then this is the game to do it. Featuring plenty of things to do, from helping your people and being a true good leader, to enforcing them through the power of military. The game and things in it are providers of countless hours of playtime and fun. However, a more thorough tutorial is needed to better allow you to understand the game's political concepts, but the reward of the captivating scenarios make it worth your while to ascend this learning curve.

Tropico has always been favorite sires of mine you take control of a small tropical Island during the cold war choosing the traits of leader and how they came to power via a coup, a revolution, or elected as a runner for a certain party. Then you rule and the fun begins, will you be a benevolent Socialist and ensure happiness and equality to the people, A lazziefare Liberal who lets the market determine the fate of the people, or a malevolent Fascist who rules the people with an Iron grip and loaded gun

Very good game but not as complex as I wouldve liked. The commentator, your advisor and your "yes man" is probably the fingernails on a black board of this game and the music just repeats like a never ending tornado in your head. Other than that, its enjoyable game, the only one of its kind still around but I think its not the perfect subsitute for SimCity.

Great city simulator. One of the big differences between Tropico 3 and Sim City games is the need to satisfy various factions. This aspect makes the game much more interesting as you have to consider how various actions will affect the disposition of the various factions on the island.

Sim City on Bananas and Papayas.

By Kelsier43 posted 5th December 2011

While playing this game I couldn't help but remember when I played sim city 2000 or whatever it was when I was much younger. And it was a in a very good way. The game is oh so simple, I was able to play a full game the first day I got it and understand most if not all of the concepts. But the micro-managment is still there if that's your thing. Certainly worth the money I spent.

Something that deserves special mention is the soundtrack. It is simply magnificent. After playing the game nearly all day when I finally gave it a break the first thing I do is look up the soundtrack on youtube and sure enough, while I'm typing this review I'm listening to Track 11 of the soundtrack. It is simply a cut above the rest when it comes to music.

Well worth the money I spent 5/5, I'd recommend it to anyone who is a fan of strategy/sim games.

Bananas here, jewelry there

Tropico has always stood out as one of the best management strategy games. With a simple idea of building small banana republics into grandeur it offers much to newcomers in strategy as well as veteran players. Different approach to each challenge brings out what is best in these kind of games, there's no 'right' way to do it, only what you think is best for your people as El Presidente. There are lots of small details which can be tended to if you are more into micromanagement but the game can be finished only using the raw basics it offers.

The game engine is a huge update when compared to the previous titles. It looks and sounds magnificent. The music is crafted to suit the game perfectly. The small details here and there make the game a mighty fine experience altogether.

I really enjoyed the original Tropico, and Tropico 3 moves the series on significantly. The campaign mode is effectively a sequence on stand-alone scenarios, and so feels a little bit artificial, but the gameplay is enjoyable and the campaign encourages you to run your island in different ways.

As with other Tropico games, the replay value is in the random map generator.

Overall the game is a nice, entertaining strategy game that you can immerse yourself in as little or as much as you want, and still enjoy the experience. Highly recommended.

This is a hard, fun, good looking city building simulator, where you must balance your private swiss bank account, your population's needs and complete bonus missions on your way to your primary goal. The graphics are amazing, and the missions are long and fun. If you finish the 15 missions and get bored of making endless random sanbox maps, you can go online and do user created challenges. At the time of this review, there were 53 pages of challenges. That's about 800 challenges at least, most of which take an hour to do. Endless fun in the little Isle of Tropico.

Really good game. Very nice graphics that don't take a whole lot of GPU power.. Great gameplay: detailed city management that doesn't get so deep that its confusing or hard to learn. Good learning curve, where anyone can pick it up but there's progressive difficulty.

There's lots of great scenarios in the campaign. An individual play of a scenario doesn't take up your whole day, either. I would certainly recommend this game to anyone who likes city management games, strategy/history games, and there's even plenty of appeal to casual gamers.

The only drawbacks: sounds in the game can get repetitive (radio announcer usually says the same things at the start of new scenarios, seems like only about 25 minutes total of music). The cabana music is a bit distracting when you're trying to read text in the game but its not a big deal.

Lots of tongue-in-cheek humor in the game; pretty well written. It can get a bit lewd at times, but its nothing too objectionable.

The best just got better ! The finest (and only) banana republic building sim, Tropico, is now remade into Tropico 3, with fancier graphics and a lot of other tweaks. The new Avatar feature is great, allowing you to move your President persona around the island to speed up production and construction. The new resources, like oil, also add to the gameplay. And of course, the new cars & roads system also help streamlining the city design tremendously.

Tropico 3 is a game where you play as "El Presidente" of a Caribbean banana republic. You can customize your presidents looks, background, rise to power, and choose between several flaws and qualities. You can either play as an evil dictator (and deal with citizens joining the rebels) or you can play as the saint of Tropico, modernizing your country and improving the economy. You can also use edicts to make people like you more (For example the social security edict, which gives 2/3 of the average pay to students and old people) and side with either the USSR, or the US. A very fun game, though the awful tutorial should be fixed.

A wonderful city building game focused on economy and politics.

By mhofever posted 14th August 2011

Although not a city builder game on a large scale like Sim City 4, Tropico 3 is one of the best in the genre for this generation.

As a banana republic nation, you can choose how to rule your nation (two prominent sides in the game known as Communism and Democracy). You have a list of factions you have to satisfy but you can never really satisfy one group without pissing off another.

The game-play is focused on the political and economical state of your nation. Earning money isn't as easy as it usually seems, so you have to keep an eye out for the best export material that you can sell in order to gain wealth.

Make your paradise island a tourist hotspot or maybe a totalitarian government that keeps vigil on it's population. Or perhaps you can try to ally with either two superpowers (USA or USSR) in order to secure peace and security for your nation.

Become a corrupt dictator or a loyal democratic president!

Not much change from the original Tropico other than graphics and an annoying commentator. The graphics are quite nice but overall Tropico 3 is missing something. It would have been nice to have more new buildings, as many of the new buildings in the game give no other benefit other than flavor and 'atmosphere'.

I'll still give it three stars because it is an enjoyable, easy economic/banana republic game. Unlike other titles in the genre it feels like a game, not a simulator, simply a game.

I've gotten more enjoyment out of Tropico 3 (and its expansion, Absolute Power) than many other games. The game perfectly captures the feel of a Cuba-style banana republic (or at least how I imagine one!), there is a pervasive tongue-in-cheek style humor to the the game that is clever without being disruptive or excessively intrusive, and the graphics are stunning. If I had to say something bad about Tropico 3, it's that it gets a bit too easy towards the end of the game. Other than that, it's pure brilliance.

This is a game that is fun while it lasts; it's well worth the $5 it's on sale for right now, but isn't the kind of game you will spend the next 6 months playing.

My biggest complaint is that the game lacks a lot of depth; within your first couple of islands, you will have done just about everything that is possible in-game. After that point, you are just doing the same as you did before. I've beaten the first several campaigns now, and don't feel much draw to go back and continue.

That said, it was very enjoyable to play for the time that I did. I think it's a well-designed game, just could bear some more depth.

Tropico 3 is a great time. It manages to fill in a lot of issues I had with the first Tropico but with out losing any of the winning parts of the first game. As a city builder goes, it's a total blast, and you can really really tweak the difficulty of a sandbox game to your own difficulty interest. All around a good game for anyone interested in petty despotism, city building, or nation uplifting!

A nice remake of the original game. Overall its very similar but now in 3D. The biggest improvement to me were the improvement in infrastructure in the form of roads and garages.

If you liked the first game than this one is certainly one for you.

Tropico 3 review

A very enjoyable simulator, if you ever felt like stepping into fidel castros or any other petty dictator's shoes this is your change. From running the economy (choosing form a tourist, mineral or agriculture focused economy) , to building up the infrastructure, dealing with island factions and ultimately choosing whether to befriend or anger the USA or USSR.

PROS: very complete game full of tiny details that make the game very realistic and enjoyable from funny tidbits like Spanish tourists being cheap, Americans craving hamburgers to details about peoples ability to learn new jobs, and their likeliness to revolt if the don't have proper housing and work, this is a well made game, it has great graphics that transport you to your little island and the game is incredibly cheap right now!

CONS : the game doesn't offer much replay-ability you can play 20 to 25 hours and you'll be done with it, it does have a sandbox mode but still the amount of buildings and things to do with your money is limited, however i bet this greatly improves with the expansion.

OVERALL: great little game with good graphics, fun game play, nice details, you'll be done with it after 20 some hours but that's still a great deal for 4.99

Tropico 3 was not even close to being a bad game. In fact it is very good. For about a week it kept me glued to my PC. But since that week I have never had the desire to return to it.

This is the problem with Tropico 3, it is really fun when you first get it but it doesn't take long for it to get old. I think it barely justifies its pricetag. 4/5

Tropico 3 is more or less an updated version of the 1st game. If you loved the 1st game, you will like this one. If you didn't, then I'm not sure why you bought it in the first place. The graphics are very good, and charming. The music is excellent. The game could benefit from more pop up information, as some things are hard to understand. This was common to the 1st and 2nd game as well. All in all, a fun and well crafted simulation game, if a bit unoriginal. 4 Stars.

By lewis626 posted 28th June 2010

Tropico 3 goes back to the roots of the hit strategy series closely following the original Tropico story-line. The time is yesterday and the Cold War is in full swing. Through means devious and dubious you have seized power in the Caribbean island country of Tropico, where you now rule as the all-powerful "El Presidente". You decide whether you want to use your army to secure your power base in the best traditions of corrupt, unscrupulous tyrants everywhere or lead your people to prosperity in your role as generous elder statesman.

A city building game where you can be the dictator of your very own small tropical island - do you really need to know anything else to get the impression that this game is full of awesome?

Tropico evokes the city building games of yore, anyone who has a hankering for the glory days of Sim City and the like will be pleased with this city sim. The ability to zoom in to any citizen and view their thoughts, wants and needs is a wonderful aspect which greatly adds to the game's depth and enjoyment.

I honestly can't say enough good things about it, if you like the city building sim style of game, it won't dissapoint.

I like this game, which is not much more than a remix of the first Tropico.

The good thing is that the gameplay is still as enjoyable, as you try your best to keep your power, trying to help one, then another, of the different factions to get what they want.

A fine piece of fun, which I recommend at any price for the ones who did not play to Tropico 1 or 2, and at less than 15€ for the others, as it is just bringing some new campaigns missions, some fixes and good graphics.

I was a fan of the original Tropico game, and Tropico 2 (though some players didn't like it compared to the original). I have been waiting for Tropico 3 to be released since I first heard they were continuing the series. I was not disappointed! The graphics are eye-catching and realistic. The game has little or no bugs to be fixed.

Tropic 3 gives you ultimate control of a Caribbean island. You are responsible for shaping the political, economical, environmental, educational landscape, and more. You control everything from crumbling shacks and small fishing docks to luxurious casinos and private airports. Tropico 3's new expansion pack (Absolute Power) is also currently available, and will give you even more choices on how to rule your island.

By Anakin posted 22nd February 2010

The original Tropico explored an interesting (and fun) idea, namely ruling a Caribbean island. Tropico 2 almost completely ignored that concept (it should not have been given the brand name), but Tropico 3 largely returns to the original form.

Though the game is a bit graphics-heavy, it includes many improvements on the original, ranging from a better infrastructure system and more advanced buildings to adding a few new flaws, traits, and background bits. All in all, it's an enjoyable game and a good sequel to the first game in the series.

But what I found was little to no improvement, I enjoyed this game but the more I played the game, the more the shallowness started to shine through and it really started to get tiresome. This is another example of a game that had so much potiential just fall so far short of being a classic because it lacked that extra effort. I would slot this in as yet another shallow strategy game you will play a couple of times then forget about.

there are a few issues to be aware of.. setting down roads can be a pain in the ass sometimes, and waiting at 99% for a couple of years for your construction crews to get up off their asses and finish is annoying.

it would of been nice to of seen graphically on screen things like people on the streets celebrating when you fund a mardi gras for example.

Music and sound is first class the music is catchy and the radio presenter is funny and informative.

I downloaded the 1.04 patch right away and experienced no bugs, the game runs smoothly.

The graphics are wonderful and detailed.

The music is just as great as the original Tropico and the radio host add more to both gameplay and atmosphere as he tell you whats up in your city between the music and your election speeches.

The buildings are pretty much the same as the original but it dont need to add many more building to make this game a 5 star for me. This is the city building game i have been wanting for a long time now.
