Trine

Rating: 4.5 (396 votes cast)

Trine is a fantasy action game where the player can create and use physics-based objects to beat hazardous puzzles and threatening enemies. Set in a world of great castles and strange machinery, three heroes are bound to a mysterious device called the Trine in a quest to save the kingdom from evil…

The gameplay is based on fully interactive physics - each character's different abilities help the player battle an army of undead and defeat hazardous contraptions. The player can at any time freely choose whoever is best suited for the upcoming challenge or puzzle: The Wizard is able to summon objects to help solve puzzles and create new ways to overcome obstacles, the Thief uses her agility and dead-on accuracy to swiftly surprise the monsters, and the Knight unleashes mayhem and physical destruction wherever he goes.

  • Mix Prince of Persia with Flashback, add true innovation and a great graphics engine… a new legend is born!
  • 3 completely different characters to control at any given time:
  • Wizard is able to cast physically simulated objects and levitate them in the totally interactive game world
  • Knight is a mayhem-bringer like no other, able to destroy objects and smash skeletons to pieces with his weapons, including the mighty Storm Hammer!
  • Thief can hit enemies from a distance with her accurate arrows but she also has a grappling hook to easily swing from one platform to another
  • Solve challenges and puzzles in many different ways – combine the characters' abilities and let your mind come up with creative solutions never seen before
  • Characters gain experience points that can be used to upgrade their abilities
  • Fully interactive game world with life-like physics, including "ragdoll" enemies and more physics objects than you can count!
  • Co-op mode for up to 3 players on the same system
  • Based on the proprietary "Frozenbyte GDE" game engine
  • Superb graphics with next-gen visuals using impressive technical effects such as bloom, reflections and realistic shadows, achieved by using state-of-the-art vertex and pixel shaders
  • 15 carefully designed and challenging levels with a distinctly unique atmosphere and graphics, including the Astral Academy, Crystal Caverns, Dragon Graveyard, Forsaken Dungeons, Fangle Forest and the Ruins of the Perished.
  • Many different items to collect - each affecting the characters' abilities
  • Well-hidden secret chests in every level
  • 3 difficulty levels to choose from
  • Amazing 19-track soundtrack composed by acclaimed Ari Pulkkinen

Creative combat/puzzle based sidescroller.

By ThreeOhFour posted 1st May

A beautiful, colourful game, with a clever system wherein you are given three characters to use, and all three are equally useful. The graphics are uniformly lovely, the soundtrack wavers now and then but is mostly pleasing, and the gameplay keeps one on their toes - with a few needless frustrations here and there. The story is a little flat and uninspired, but does the job of providing a motive. It's an interesting experiment in physics based puzzles and combat and one that, for the most part, pays off.

Lush Gorgeous And Fun

By Keyrock posted 14th January

Trine is an action/puzzle platformer that sees you play 3 different characters that you can switch freely between. There is a warrior, a wizard, and a thief. You use each of these companions' different abilities to fight your way through enemies and solve puzzles to progress through the environments. While the game isn't particularly challenging or punishing, it is very fun and the environments you travel through are some of the most lush and beautiful you will encounter in any game. Simple, family friendly fun.

Trine is a fun little game, not to serious and cheerful experience. The art style is marvelous, the music is very fitting and really enhances the experience.

The only reason why some one might not like this is if they are not in to there's kind of games. My personal enjoyment 4/5

Suprinsigly good

I'm usually not found of this type of games. I read a lot of positive reviews, so i finally wanted to test it. I couldn't imagine how it could be beautiful, but as i saw the graphics, i had to change my mind. This is really beautiful and colorful.

I also like the gameplay based on physics and agility. The good thing is that you have several solutions to go forward : use the archer and his rope to fly above obstacles, break objects with the sword of your fighter, create crate with the magician.

The games flows really easily and is fun. So if you want a "little" game that you can play for half an hour without getting to involved in a complicated gameplay and story, you can try this one.

Trine isn't just a game! No way. It's a beautiful fairy tale with atmospheric level design, nice sound and much more. Just finished it and im still amazed.

This game is a fresh breeze in platformer's genre. You take control of three heroes with very different, but complementary, abilities, and face challenges where those abilities are used to their best. The graphics and sounds are superb and the puzzle are mostly very interesting and challenging. In some areas, the game was so hard it made me curse, and some things could be tweaked and improved, but overall, a very good game.

This game is great to play with family and friends. The puzzles are fun to work through and aren't so difficult that you are left frustrated. One problem I've encountered when three players are playing all at once is it's difficult to get the right characters on the right controls. Wizard works best on mouse and keyboard while the other two do better with a 360 remote but it tends to be rather random who gets what so expect to have to exchange constantly to get what you want. Other than that it's one of those games even a child could play as the story remains lighthearted and nothing in it is too difficult to overcome.

Trine is a superb 2.5D (that is, 3D graphics and 2D gameplay) platformer that sets itself apart due to a couple of things. Firstly, the game makes use of a great physics engine that factors mainly into puzzles and platforming, but also into way that the game's combat works. Secondly, and perhaps the more important thing, is the game's gorgeously detailed fairy-tale aesthetic, in terms of it's setting, story, and atmosphere. Every level makes you feel as if you're walking through a fantasy story-book, and the game is technically beautiful to boot.

The only downside is the game's fairly easy difficulty. However, that's not a big factor in a game like this, and it's still a unique title worth experiencing for yourself.

This game is pure brilliance. For anyone who likes platformers, it's a must buy, but even if you don't usually like platformers, you should still check it out anyway. Innovative gameplay, clever physics engine, beautiful artwork, there's really not a lot else one could ask for.

Trine is an interesting platformer with a good blend of features. The game revolves around a wizard, thief and soldier who have become magically bound to an ancient relic; you get to swap between these characters on the fly to take advantage of their abilities. The game is very well rounded, consistently providing exploration, physics puzzles, combat, and a very small amount of stat management in almost every level. Oh yeah, and it looks awesome. There are some shortcomings, but they are minimized somewhat by an extremely generous checkpoint system.

Very good old school scrolling game. Fantastic graphic, very engaging action. The idea of having three different characters to pass specific obstacles is great. Strongly recommended, good reviews from everybody.

Such a great mix of beautiful graphics, fun game play, and a good story to boot. The first time I played this game I knew I had been playing for too long when I looked out the window and saw the sun coming up. Then I found out you could play co-op... Awesomeness overload!

P.s. I can't wait to play the second one!

Trine is the only side scroller I have played that every action is fluid and in direct response to your input. The game for me is a nice way to waste a little time between my usual fare. Once you try it you will come back and make another attempt to get all the way through it. I feel for the price I have gotten every cent worth.

This is a great platformer where you control 3 persons in 1. Knight, mage, thief. Switch between them whenever you need to solve different puzzles. It has beautiful graphics and music. The only downside for me was that for full price it has a quite short story. But if you see this game with a discount you should grab it like i did!

Trine Short and Sweet

By strngepurpl posted 30th September 2011

Its a good platformer with puzzle based physics and a bit of combat, although a bit short. Most of the puzzles can be solved by any three of the characters once you level up a bit which is pretty nice so you can use the character you have the most fun with. The music is great and the game is definitely worth it if there's a sale.

Trine - Brilliance

By Wabbit posted 24th August 2011

Trine possesses a simple but yet enigmatic storyline and premise. Indeed it does only present the player with few characters, but the structure of the storyline, along with the pristine artworks and aesthetics of the game, give much pleasure to the senses. I give Trine a 4.5/5 rating since it is, in all its simplicity, a beautiful game, but yet lacks the immersive side of the story, with a lack in enemy variantion (that is only skeletons)and quite frankly, the expierence is just a bit too short, for my personal liking.

Trine makes many things right. And if you search for a coop-game, this is exactly what you are looking for.

The three characters to choose from are very different, so you really have to switch between them permanently to reach you goal. Unfortunately, when you play coop with 2 players, there can be some deaths on you side if you need a certain character (the mage is not very strong in defending against more than one opponent) , but both players try to switch at the same time. In this case, you or your friend end up with a wrong character.

But all-in-all, you get a really great game with more playing-time than I thought (about 6 hours).

Trinimes hit-or-miss, but overall add to the enjoyment of the game. e review

This game is super fun! It's a 3D side scroller with beautiful graphics. Battle is simple, it's more about logic/logistics/small puzzles. The music is great, and it's a blast to play with friends (just have them bring their keyboards and mice!) Again, super simple but super fun, glad I bought it.

This game is good.

An old school plateformer (the way I like them) with some cool musics and awesome level environnement.

As it was said it reminds me of lost viking.

Still it appears that the game is short for its original price but 19,90€) but with a discount, you really should give it a go

Highly addictive

By Smithy087 posted 10th August 2011

Highly addictive puzzle/platform game where you control 3 completely different characters and use each of their special talents and spells to defeat a horde of undead and to reach the end of the level. There is loads of extra collectables along the way which prove to keep you on your toes throughout. The graphics are also splendid and mystical. I love this game! I got it in the deal for £2 but I would have certainly paid full price.

I think every gamer who played games in the nineties can remember the lost vikings. Three vikings, one with a shield (but otherwise useless), one with a sword (but for some reason can't hold his own shield...) and the jump guy (the "pacifist" of the bunch). As with the vikings, you need to use the abilities of all your three heroes to get to the end of the level. Of course the introduction of a physics engine and outstanding graphics makes the experience that much more enjoyable.

Nearly perfect game

By Sephix posted 8th August 2011

Trine is easily one of the best games ever made. In recent past I haven't had so much fun with a game.

The idea with three playable characters which you can switch between everytime isn't new but works very well. In Trine there isn't just one way to get over hurdles, that's great and makes a lot of fun.

It also has a beautiful story that reminds of a fairy tale, very lovely graphics and a fantastic soundtrack.

Great game, as many others have stated, it does bear a resemblance to The Lost Viking. It's good, solid platformer fun with cool physics integrated into the gameplay rather than just being tacked on. Unfortunately, it is too short (finished in about 10 hours), and does not have much replay value once you're done. As such, I wouldn't recommend it at its default price tag, but if it's on promo, then it's certainly a great purchase.

Pros: almost perfect example of what a platformer should be like. Pleasing graphics and sounds/music, and rock-solid gameplay.

Cons: too short, not much replay value to justify the $20 price tag.

A very unique game requiring good logic. Not a typical puzzle solving game. Immersive and fun. Need to figure out which character to use & what physics to apply, to get to the other side. Simple yet ingenious. Loved it.

This game is great, it takes a good concept and adds a new twist to it while staying true to itself. For $5, its a steal.

A physics based puzzle-platformer that will leave you wanting more!

Trine is a beautifully orchestrated game with a tongue in cheek bit of humor that pokes fun at fantasy stereotypes.

The idea is simple: 3 different characters combined into one, allowing the player to use multiple ways to complete puzzles and challenges. The wizard character can conjure objects (but no fireball!) to transverse obstacles, and crush enemies. The thief attacks enemies from a distance with her bow, and uses her whip to swing across gaps. The knight bashes enemies with his weapons, and tosses heavy objects in a pinch.

The end result is a well polished game, which you will be glad you have in your game library.

The only two downsides of the game is that its a bit short (although acceptably long for the price of the game,) and the game gets a bit easy towards the end of the game, when the three heroes get more expanded abilities. Its too bad that the developers disable "Very Hard" mode until you do a complete walk through, as the game is a bit too easy for my taste in normal and hard mode.

Score Card:

Graphics 8/10

-Not designed to be graphics intense, but very pretty and colorful. Trine presents a beautiful world with varied backgrounds.

Sound 9/10

-Well voice acted with witty dialogue and a nice musical score.

Gameplay 8/10

-Fun physics based platformer, although points deducted for being a bit easy. Casual gamers will enjoy.

Balance 5/10

-Once the player has leveled up a few times, the end game abilities make obstacles a bit too easy to overcome.

Overall 8/10

-Fun game, but game length could be longer, and the game could be more challenging.

It's a great game, very old school and entertaining. I loved the colours and sceneries. As with all the platform games some times it gets on your nerves and its a bit repetitive. Anyway, I bought it on a sale, so it's good and cheap entertainment.

This is a great game for anyone who enjoys old school platformers, especially if you are a Lost Viking fan.

The game is absolutely gorgeous, and the gameplay was engaging enough for me to barrel through it over the course of two days. It was well worth the $10 I paid for it.

Note that it does have some control issues (you can't hold up and jump, for example) and multiple keyboards not actually working (even with the setting enabled), so it isn't perfect. But it still a worthwhile diversion.

Trine is a game where you know the creators took care in making the game and had a passion while doing so. The game consists of playing as three characters that you can switch to on-the-fly as you play. You will need each character depending on the setting in which you find yourself.

While not an overly hard game, it will present the player with some challenging moments how to get to some of the Experience vials. Also, while not very hard you will find yourself dying more than you expect from the foes you face.

The game itself plays well as a side-scroller and the graphics are very well done. The physics are at times hit-or-miss, but overall add to the enjoyment of the game.

The developers seem to be very friendly and helpful on the official Trine site and forums. Trine is a game worth playing and one that I have gone back to simply see if I can press on a bit further in the game and solve how to get to various areas. It is a fun game that will pass the time well.

Pretty decent graphics and very good physics. Most i enjoyed was smashing the skeletons with the big hammer and see them fly all over the place, some of the puzzles were rather well done but most of them were really easy (i played on easy so i dont know if it makes difference on how hard you play it on). Only problem i had with this game was that it was too short and thats why i would say not worth 30 euros for something that i could play through in 1 day (easy dif). Overall i give it 4*
