Theatre of War 2: Centauro

Rating: 3.8 (273 votes cast)

A new expansion pack for the critically acclaimed Theatre of War 2: Africa 1943, the tactical World War II title.

Ownership of the original Theatre of War 2: Africa 1943 is required.

The new expansion pack, Theatre of War 2 – Centauro is dedicated to the 131st Armored Division Centauro and the battles it took part in North Africa starting from December 1942 till mid-May 1943. The 131st Armored Division Centauro (in Italian: 131ª Divisione Corazzata "Centauro") was an armored division of the Italian Army during World War II. The pack features a new campaign and covers missions from rearguard actions near El Ageyla in Libya to the battles in Tunisia.  New desert and mountain landscapes of North Africa will be available on ten new maps accurately reconstructed according to historical documents.  There will also be ten new missions based on real battles in Tunisia allowing would-be Generals to command counterattacks, breakthroughs, flanking manuevers, hardened defenses and stealthy ambushes.  Ten new military vehicles will also make their debut in this expansion including the Semovente M40 tank destroyer, the Carro Armato M13/40 medium tank, the Autoblinda AB 40 armored car, and many more.

Theatre of War 2: Centauro review

This is one of the few if not the only games out there that actually has realistic scale modeled fire range and line of sight. AT guns are your only chance to knock out those panzers. You will treasure them above all or otherwise you're doomed from the get go.

This is one of the few if not the only games out there that actually has realistic scale modeled fire range and line of sight. AT guns are your only chance to knock out those panzers. You will treasure them above all or otherwise you're doomed from the get go. Pre-battle deployment is equally important as your quick reaction during the battle. Wrong placement of your forces will pose outflanking threat and total annihilation. Your infantry is a serious threat to enemy tanks if they are in trenches and have AT grenades. Your ammunition is severely limited. Make your shots count. Knock out those guns on tanks first. Or if they come into range - you're toast. Your units can capture and man guns and tanks. Unfortunately equipment is not transferred between missions. Your soldiers gain experience and it is transferable between missions.

ToW Africa is still in my top 10 favourite games, and this expansion pack is part of the reason for that.

While there aren't as many new units as with the other expansion (Battle for Caen) the new maps and assorted missions more than make up for that.

It's also a pleasant surprise to see the Italians represented in-game, as far as I know there are very few strategy titles which include the Italians and those that do are generally a generic RTS in which the Italian units will have the same basic stats (armour/gun) as German/US units, but with a simple reskin.

Like all other ToW games, as fun as the campaigns are, I feel that the mission editor/generator is one of the highlights and reasons that these games will continue to be played for many years. Because Centauro adds another 10 maps, this can be seen as many more hours of enjoyment for the ToW fans - Of course the desert setting can become dull for some, it is ideal for large tank engagements.

Additionally, there is a rather substantial user-made mod for Africa which adds numerous units and it is also compatible with Centuaro, adding even more Italian units to the mix. So that is worth a look and can be found (I believe..) in the Battlefront Repository.

I won't bore readers with what the game is or how it's played - This is an expansion and you wouldn't be looking here if you didn't already know what the game was about.

So once again I will close by saying: If you enjoy ToW, you'll enjoy Centauro - Just make sure you don't expect the bugs or irritating features from Africa to have been addressed. ;)
