Torchlight

Rating: 4.4 (797 votes cast)

Download the new Torchlight Editor here.

The adventure is set in the mining settlement of Torchlight, a boomtown founded on the discovery of rich veins of Ember - a rare and mysterious ore with the power to enchant or corrupt all that it contacts.  This corruptive power may have dire consequences however, and players set out into the nearby mountains and depths below to discover the full extent of Ember’s influence on the civilizations that have come before.

Players will choose from among three character classes, and venture from the safety of the town of Torchlight into randomly generated dungeon levels, with a huge variety of creepy monsters, endless variations of loot to find, and quests to complete. The endless randomization ensures a long-lived gameplay experience.

FEATURES

  • Randomization – Our level layouts are randomly created, so each adventure is unique. Monsters, treasures, puzzles, and items are also different each time you embark on an adventure.
  • Easy, approachable interface – Torchlight is designed to be easy to play right from the beginning. The intuitive interface gives players easy access to a rich and varied world.
  • Retirement System – Once characters are sufficiently leveled up, they can “retire” and bestow specific benefits and perks to new characters.
  • Pets – Players will choose a pet to accompany them. Pets can level up along with the player, and will help in battle, carry items, and perform a variety of helpful services.
  • Character Classes – Players will create and customize a character from one of three classes available, and choose an animal companion. Through cosmetic choices, skill path decisions, and the treasures they acquire, each character will be custom-tailored and different.
  • Fishing – Players can take a break from the high-energy pace of adventuring to visit one of the fishing holes and relax and see what they can catch. Fish have interesting benefits for the player and pet, and other rewards can also be discovered
  • Included Editor – Runic Games is embracing our modding community by including an editor so our players can create and design their own content.

Ever played Diablo 2? Of course you did, or else you're missing one of the awesomest game of all time. Long story short this game is very similar to Diablo 2. Downside is this game doesn't have multiplayer, but it's in-production sequel, Torchlight 2 have multiplayer. So does that mean that you should skip on this and straight away jump to Torchlight 2? Thats entirely up to you, really :) Overall, this is a great game to pass the time!

Glorious Hack n'slash with cute graphics. Fun, easy to learn and addictive if linear. Don't bother if you are looking for a dialogue-based RPG though.

It also has a few very good gameplay ideas like the pet that can sell your items while you continue your quest.

If you have ever played games like Diablo or Fate this an excellent buy. The visual style is easy on the eyes, the gameplay is fun and exciting, and there's tons of loot and cool armor. I can't wait to buy the sequel.

Click. Click. Click. Click. That's what it sounds like to play torchlight, however unlike what I said about Harbringer, this is a good thing. Torchlight takes the old school idea of a hub town and dungeon and updates it to modern standards. There are three classes to choose from, a tank/warrior, a ranger/gunner, and a mage/nuker. Each are fun to play, I myself play mostly on the tank. One of the best aspects of the game is that even though each adventurer is out for themselves in the long run there in a commuity chest in the hub town so if you find some phat uber haxx loot for your mage while on your tank you can easily give it to your other toon via said chest. Controls are standard for it's genre, click to move, click to attack. You can also bind right click to a special attack. 1-5 are your left spell/item bar. Good, basic, no fancy keybindings were needed so they didn't add any, nice as some devs ideas of controls are far from what gammers actually like. After about an hour of play I was level 5, had purple gear and was feeling rather good about my little tank, what I mean to say is my work felt very rewarding, unlike an MMO where two hours of grinding will net you a couple of green level gear, maybe. All and all, a great hack and slash where if you die you only have yourself (and your lack of healing potions) to blame. Very fun, and well worth the cost.

This game is a lot of fun. I never played the Diablo games which this game is usually compared to, so I can't compare it to them. It became pretty addictive right from the start. I'm running it on a system with integrated graphics (nvidia 9100), and it plays great at max settings. The only thing I dislike is not being able to control the characters with the standard WASD keys.

Great game!

This game's most notable faults are the lack of multiplayer and the stale late-game. Other than this, the game stands out as one of the most promising new IPs I've seen in this genre, with an interesting storyline, unique characters, and unique abilities.

Outstanding dungeon crawler. It's obvious it shares staff with Diablo, but that works in it's favour. Enough variety to keep you going and worth replaying, but simple enough that newcomers can easily get into it.

At the very least, it'll keep you busy for more than enough hours, and a great modding community also seals it.

Torchlight review

By dojadoug posted 15th September 2011

I give it a five star rating partly based on the price. It is a standard Dungeon raiding game but has many necessary elements for this type of game without leaving out essential elements.

- There is a community treasure chest for all your characters so you can pass gear easily. Each character also has their own treasure chest so you can create alts for extra storage.

- While there are only three classes, skill points and attribute points can be distributed in a variety of ways to add to customization and replay-ability.

- Once you have cleared a level, you can return to that level and clear it again with different random loot dropping.

Overall it isn't the greatest game, but I found no flaws to bother me and I am rather picky about games leaving out an essential element. I don't have a powerful a gaming computer and even with the lowest graphics settings the graphics look great.

Diablo light would be a good description and it's good fun especially in the beginning.

After a while it does become a bit repetitive and it doesn't suck you in as Diablo does so I didn't finish it myself.

If you like these games it's definately worth a try.

More of a tech demo than anything...A lot of balance issues - including enemies, skills and item drops - and a short single player campaign are the main problems. Graphics and the atmosphere is a bit too cartoony perhaps - the exact opposite of Diablo 2 - but I was personally OK with it. Different classes share too many skills and gameplay essentially converges to uniformity later on. Still, had good fun with it for 10-12 hours.

Torchlight to me is a decent clone of the Diablo type game, in short bursts it can be very enjoyable but in my opinion it is not a game to sit at for 6 hours.

My main dislikes about the game are the repeated monsters and the cartoonist graphics

on the plus side however is the fact that developers are still trying to recreate that spark that the diablo franchise mastered (though due to Diablo 3's Steam reliance I will skip it)

Torchlight is not a bad game, it is just that I don’t like these kinds of games anymore. I played Diablo to death, and I don’t even understand how I was able to do so. Maybe it was just a period of my life in which I needed mindless entertaining. A lot of RPG purists blame Diablo for ruining the genre, and I agree. Torchlight is just another one of the many, many games following that prosaic formula. If you like to just click and kill hordes of stupid enemies and collect hordes of stupid stuff, then this game is for you. I tried again, and I really cannot digest these games anymore.

Torchlight review

By verkkopeli posted 2nd August 2011

Torchlight capitalises on the tested-and-approved action-RPG formula first seen in Diablo. The game does its job reasonably well, providing hours of entertaining dungeon exploring and monster bashing (or shooting, if you opt for the firearms present in the game). Admittedly, in comparison to the aforementioned classic and especially its sequel, Torchlight is more simplistic - for example, there aren't as many monster types or kinds of items to be found. On the other hand, the gameplay is highly polished, and there are a few novelties (and, as any roguelike player would say, borrowings) that give the game a distinct feeling of its own. For instance, the hero has a loyal pet that follows him (or her) everywhere, and should the player desire a break from the unending hack-and-slash, he can sheath his sword and take out his fishing rod when a suitable location comes along.

Torchlight was designed to run on low-end computers also (including netbooks - there is a special 'netbook mode'), which is probably why it looks reasonably good even on the lowest quality settings. The graphics resemble cartoons in style, which fits the 'lightweight Diablo' theme of the game very well. The player interface works smoothly, too, and the way the problem of the ever-overflowing inventory so familiar from almost all computer RPGs is handled in the game deserves a special mention: instead of having to travel back and forth between the dungeons and the nearest shopkeeper, the player can load his loot on his pet and send it to town. The goods are sold automatically, and the pet returns after a while to wherever the hero happens to be at that moment.

All in all, Torchlight could have potentially challenged the more famous titles in its genre if it had offered more content. However, despite of its limitations, the game remains highly entertaining, and the three available character classes are different enough to provide added replayability value. Recommended for those looking for a highly playable, entertaining action game.

Torchlight seems to be a spiffed up version of the PC dungeon crawler FATE - the graphics are prettier, it runs faster, fishing is easier and you don't have to carry that damn bulky fishing poll, and there's a fancy new trick to customizing items.

That being said, if you like hack and slash dungeon crawlers this game is for you. It's incredibly replayable because so much of it is randomly generated. My biggest quibble is that there is only one female default, she is much more scantily clad than her male counterparts, and she is better suited to a ranged play style. FATE let you play as male or female and customize your playing style however you saw fit. Some of us like playing as girls and wielding giant 2-handers, okay.

Hack and slash games. Not exactly my cup of tea. yet I must admit that I liked at lest three of those I tried. Diablo, Diablo the second and Torchlight. Torchlight is the smallest of the three. It's repetitive like all games of the genre and there aren't a lot a different environments to explore. Yet it's wonderfully playable and enjoyable. Difficult to say why. But this games manages to suck you in the gameplay. You start and next time you get the head up , it's about time to get a few hours sleep before going back to work.

By godsbutler posted 28th May 2011

Torchlight a great time killer. It is mindless, cute and can be played in small spurts or long stretches. There is no real story, just an excuse to explore deeper in a mine (dungeon). The sound effects are excellent making it even more satisfying when a monster is gibbed. It lacks Diablo's gritty appeal, obviously, but as a result it's more kid friendly. The lack of multiplayer is disappointing, but the single player goes on "forever". There are a number of cool mods available for the game. After a while, though, the mindless killing gets old, but not before you've gotten your money's worth, especially when it's on sale.

Torchlight review

By jcdenton303 posted 16th May 2011

Torchlight is a cutesy hack-n-slash RPG set in a mining town and the various levels of dungeons below it.

It has nice graphics and a pretty decent character system, with a nice range of cool spells and attacks. The art design is totally WoW-inspired. Like any hack-n-slashs, Torchlight is all about character-building (and I'm not talking about in the plot). Gain levels in experience and fame, and upgrade your weaponry and armor, from the start, until the end of the game. It runs super-smooth with very little bugs or slow moments. Due to the limited nature of this gaming sub-genre, that's about all there is good to be said about Torchlight.

On the negative side, once you beat the first seven levels of the dungeon, they are repeated. The level design is supposedly randomised for re-playability, but it seems that they're so randomised that you often randomly get exactly the same level twice in the one game. Even properly randomised levels aren't saved from the monotony that keeps hack-n-slashes firmly out of the ranks of ground-breaking gameplay. The music and sound is can't of, with nothing but generic ambiance and a bit of tinkling on a piano.

So what makes Torchlight stand out? Absolutely nothing. This is a generic as gaming gets, having stole its gameplay from Diablo and its style from WoW. Hack-n-slash fans however, are going to love it. I'm not a big HnS fan, but I'll occasionally play one through if I need some mindless fun. Torchlight really kicks off when you reach around level 25-30 and your character really gets powerful. You smash relentlessly through hordes of enemies and levels of dungeons with great velocity. I recommend turning music down to 0 and putting on the upbeat, dirty, hard rock, or some driving industrial techno - then you'll really start kickin' ass.

A very nice game, to me it seems like a mixture of diablo and fate. It has decent graphics, but not much in the sounds department. It's quite fun, i havent gotten far into the game yet but from what i can tell is it takes alot of things from fate, like the pets and what the pets can do. but one of my favorite things in the game is that your pet can actually cast spells!!! I also like how it is very easy to add mods into the game. It runs very fast for a game with these graphics (considering im on a netbook) The only problems i have so far with this game is the sell and buy prices, i mean you can sell something for 60gp and buy it back for about 1000gp, talk about inflation. But i can see how that is supposed to help limit your character, because if you could buy things cheaply or sell things high, it would be very easy to become overpowered. On the lower difficulty levels i've found that most monsters you can kill in one or two hits (not including bosses of course) overall this game is $5.08 well spent.

I gave this game 4/5 stars for one reason, no online play. Singeplayer is entertaining enough for a while, but the game just feels like it should be co-op playable. The graphics are decent for this generation and the mechanics work fine, and even the quests can throw some curveballs every once in a while. So if you need something to play offline or even while on the go on a laptop this would be an easy pick.

Torchlight, after played several hours - my comment is nothing special. I had used all THREE characters to play the game, its nearly the same with only the difference in FIGHTING. What I have to do is FIGHT, Fight and still fight. Is there any actions with NPC? Is there any interesting quests to solve? Is there attractive background? Is there additive storyline? I didn't enjoy the game as much as many others. I'm generally entertained by goofy art, but this went even further than distorted "Warcraft" style graphics. It was very difficult for me to stay focused on and interested in the game when I was surrounded by a pastel-colored, cutesy environment.

Combat was excessively easy and, yet, unsatisfying. My pet was a good combat companion when transformed, but fairly useless in his native form. I was fairly upset by that, as I wasn't particularly happy having to have a spider by my side all the time in order to have a useful combat pet. Fighting solo, all I did was press a couple of buttons. I didn't have to worry about positioning, use combos, or even switch skills - just auto-attack and, occasionally, use an area of effect spell when surrounded by enemies.

Quests were fairly uninspired. Even taking the time to read the quest text, I didn't find anything approximating good writing - actually, it was rather painful.

Sound design was good but not excellent. I have no complaints, but didn't find the sound or music memorable in any way.

I will say that what was stolen/inspired by the earlier game Fate was well-implemented. Having an auto-sell companion was helpful, and improvements to the potion system were nice. Having to install an additional mod to respec, however, was annoying.

For the price I paid I can't complain too much, but had I known what I know now I wouldn't have bothered.

If you like a Diablo-like mindless action hack & slash game with RPG elements, this game is for you. :) The game is quite low on system requirements, it should work with many different configurations.

There are three characters to choose from, each very different from the others. And the character development portion is really good.

The game is little short on story, but that's not the focus anyway. :)

One kind of a bad thing is that it might get boring after several hours, but you can always make a second character to play with.

Anyone who enjoys Action RPG's needs to get this game. Take the original Diablo and upgrade the graphics, add in some features that streamline the gameplay and you have Torchlight. Even though I enjoyed Diablo II and Titan Quest, I kept coming back to Diablo for some real fun. Because of this game I think I can finally shelve Diablo... the gameplay feels the closest to it with some more added flavor. Every class gets a pet (that you can turn into different monsters if you play the fishing mini-game), you can send that pet back to town in the dungeon so town portal scrolls are close to obsolete. Very polished and tons of fun.

This game is descent RPG hack and slash, it has very simple interface, and quite good plot. Graphics are nice if you like cartoon style games. Gig advantage of this game is a pet which is our companion and we can give some staff we find to him so he can carry it for us or we can send him too sell some things in shop, so we do not have to waste time on going back to town only because we do not have enough room for new staff. Levels and enemies are very diverse so it is not so boring.

Biggest disadvantage of this game is lack of multiplayer mode, it would make this game more fan to play for much longer time. But still I think it is descent game and worth trying. If you liked Diablo I and II this game is for you :)

The game mechanics (i.e. inventory, leveling system, skills etc.)and elements are almost identical, not even the music make exception. The story and graphics being the major differences, it's no wonder that some of the Diablo 2 cast was part in making Torchlight.

Personally I found the game very 'cartoonish', lots of colors and effects. Also the loading screens took too long to load when changing location. Other than that the game's fair entertainment.

I won't lie to you, I'm new to the whole action RPG gaming malarkey... and Torchlight has hooked me thoroughly into the genre!

Anyone who has played Diablo-esque games will feel right at home in this indie adventure, with the three main character classes representing old favourites:

--> The Vanquisher is the ranged combat specialist/rogue-like character focusing on bows, guns and traps.

--> The Destroyer is your archetype tank class, able to absorb damage and dish it out as good as he gets.

--> The Alchemist is the magic caster, able to summon minions and blast enemies with magic.

The story focuses around the mining town of Torchlight, with the player heading further down into the ground beneath Torchlight in pursuit of fame and loot. The player can take up challenges from the townsfolk from the usual "kill this enemy", to "find this loot", in exchange for gold and items that will make your dungeon crawling experience a little easier.

The graphics in Torchlight can be compared to World of Warcraft (cartoony), but not in a bad way. It totally suits the atmosphere, and adds to the atmosphere of the game. You can't help but care for your character and his/her pet!

As mentioned, Torchlight was developed by a small indie studio, and the charm that they've managed to instil shines through when compared to games made by larger studio/publishers. Also, the developers support has been second to none, with patches adding new content and features, and bug fixes coming quickly.

In summary:

The graphics are charming, and the sound is brilliantly atmospheric.

Torchlight is a beauty of a game, and will sap away hours of your time.

So far i had a lot of fun with this game, the bonbon-cartoon graphics at first scared me a bit and the small download too, but it prooved to be a very solid game. Addictive and fun to play. If you like hack&slash games in diablo style this is definately one for you. The only downside i came across so far is that the dungeons look quite the same sadly but you will still have a lot of fun with this game.

Certainly priceworthy, and even for me that isn't really a fan of hack n slash, I had good fun with it for the time I played it.

Nice graphics, easy controls, easy-to-read interface, and solid gameplay. It's a bit repetetive, but that's usually what these games are all about. There's tons and tons of loot, so if that's your type of game, Torchlight is sure to satisfy.

An enjoyable dungeon romp, marred only by being perhaps too easy even on harder settings. It does have the Diablo and Titan Quest elements others have mentioned, but a more accurate comparison would be Fate, right down to the pet companion and fishing spots. The creators (from fate and Diablo) have taken all the most user friendly features from their other games in making this one.

If you want a game that will give you Diablo flashbacks in terms of pure hack and slash game play, then Torchlight is the game for you! Great fun, funny art design, and a very interesting setting allow for a level of free-spirited fun I haven't experienced in a while, and hopefully you'll join me in my opinion. Try Torchlight if you want a hack and slash fix before Diablo III!

Torchlight is simply a big piece of fun. With the destroyer class and the hardcore mode, you'll get back the thrills you had long time ago with the Diablo's barbarian. The skill tree is quite well balanced and will give pleasure to anyone who likes to hack... and slash !

Despite being a direct copy of the aging Diablo 2 this title (from former blizzard staff) succeeds in feeling fresh, fun, and addictive. The gameplay is simple and the story is almost nix, but the grind is soothing and the looting is exilerating. Some clever minor tweaks to the classic game mechanic and a cartoony look helps the game stand on it's own feet so you wont be bored if you have been revisiting the dungeons of Diablo recently. Pro: Fun, stylish, excellent value. Con: Too much like Diablo and not enough like Titan Quest. Conclusion: There now is a new device to pass the time untill Diablo 3 arrives, and it's name is Torchlight.

Be careful, because this game is really addicting. You'll immediately feel the urge to go forward, getting new items and gain new levels. Like others said, it's an Action RPG, by the same makers of Diablo 1 and 2. And it shows. The polish level is great and they communicate a lot with the community. They'll release the game editing tools shortly, so hopefully the community will pick the editor up and give this game some long legs. Not only a bargain, but also the sleeper hit of this holiday season.

The most addictive game I played in a long time. A beautiful RPG, which keeps you coming back for more, delving deeper into the dungeon and collecting bigger and better equipment. With a choice of three different characters, and many different ways of configuring those characters, there is plenty of replay value. The gameplay is relatively easy and would suit a more inexperienced gamer. If you have played this style of game before, I would recommend starting of one of the higher difficulty levels, where you will find more of a challenge. Although already a very solid game and free of major bugs, the developer appears very keen to provide ongoing support. The lack of multiplayer may be a miss for some , but the single player experience is compelling. In summary, this is a must buy, but make sure you got nothing pressing coming up in real life, as you be spending a lot of time with Torchlight

Anyone who enjoys Diablo/Diablo II will definitely want to try this title.

The price is hard to beat, and the gameplay is solid and addictive in the initial release.

I had an initial issue with long load times between levels, but found a quick fix on their forums that has helped considerably (reduced my load times by 50% or more), and the recent update should actually improve it even more.

At first, I was a bit taken aback by what seemed to be cartoonish graphics, but very quickly decided that this really wasn't a problem, just a bit different.

I have to express my thanks to the developers of this title, who contine to have a very open and active dialog with their customers, and are actively working to track down any issues which are raised. The quick release of the new build, bears this out.

For anyone who likes Hack & Slash games in the style of Diablo / DungeonSiege / Sacred / TitanQuest this is simply a MUST buy!

Torchlight is created by the people who originally created Diablo and Diablo II (ex Blizzard-North) and Fate (Travis Baldree), and they know exactly how to make a truly addictive action RPG game!

The production design is top-notch with a very attractive and polished look. The music is beautifully atmospheric and composed by the same composer who created the music for Diablo and Diablo II. The gameplay is very similar to the original Diablo game, with a lot of great elements of Fate mixed in.

Anyone who loves a beautiful dungeon crawler game that satisfies your greed for loot and makes you forget about the time because you can't stop playing should look no further and just buy this superb game!

This is a VERY solid game in the same action RPG genre as Diablo or Titan Quest. You pick from 3 classes all with interesting skill trees and subclasses, and the loot starts flowing.

I love the art direction of this game, everything is colorful and vibrant even though you are constantly sinking deeper into the mines of Torchlight. Animation is very smooth and the combat feels really well done.

All in all the only negative thing I can think to say about this game is the lack of multi-player support, but for the asking price of $19.95 it's hard to nitpick such a good deal.
