Beautiful game but kinda uninspired...

By 33miles- posted 23rd December 2012

To start off, this game is very shiny! I loved the graphics, although there are no advanced options to lessen them much which was sad because my GTX 660 Ti 2gb GPU and the rest of my beefy system had problems puting out a solid frame rate. The game plays more like a sim than anything, cars are hard to control and it's definitely not arcade easy. I was hard pressed to pass the first race in the silver era on easy mode. If you read the story it's fairly strange and you don't get rewards soon enough to keep you motivated. While there are over 50 cars and a fair number of tracks you'll get confused as to what unlocks what. I found my self scrolling through the cars and mission screens many times as they are not very self explanatory. Also note that most races except for quick race start you with a flying start, that was not always to my liking. Plus the guy who speaks to you was an absolute robot and very repetitive as he says the same thing at the same time every time you restart a race which you will do often. There are no flashback features like in GRID or Dirt. On a more positive note the engine sound was amazing! All your cars scream very realisticaly. So if you like Ferrari's like me you will probably try to ignore these faults, but overall this game gets a 3 out of 5 from me. PS if you hate GFWL then this game might bother you, it takes me about 35-40 seconds to log in each time I start it.

Test your tolerance to game mediocrity. Drive Ferraris.

So it's official: Slightly Mad Studios don't give a toss about anything that's not ProjectCARS anymore. After a long delay the PC version of TDFL is finally here, and sadly the extra months were NOT used to fix the console versions' multiple flaws.

- the game uses Games For Windows Live. WHY ??

- minimalistic matchmaking multiplayer, finding players is a chore, no ping info

- extremely limited graphics, audio and gameplay options

- worst blur and AA ever, lots of LOD pop-up, depressing track environments

- collisions are a joke and cause framerate hiccups

- odd difficulty spikes and stupid objectives that block progression through the campaign

- random race conditions: sometimes an inch of tyre out of the asphalt results in immediate disqualification, sometimes you can cut the track multiple times and win...

- can't turn off all driving assists, same ugly HUD for all eras

- no cutscenes or historical flavour of any kind

- the same english voice talks over the same comlink, whatever the era the race is supposed to take place in

+ very low system requirements

+ supports Eyefinity/Surround with correct FOV

+ replays can be saved (quite shocking in this day and age)

+ lots of career "missions", lots of cars (but it's a pain to unlock any)

+ quick race against up to 15 AI is kinda fun (except the AI is terrible)

Seriously, steer clear of this one. TDFL is "eternal backlog" material, an extreme example of a lazy port of a mediocre game. Don't be a fool, there are so many free/cheap racing games out there that look and play so much better than this...
