Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing review

By Dwagginz posted 26th June 2012

Until Mario Kart comes to PC (which it won't), Sonic & SEGA All-Stars racing will suffice as a stand-in product. It's a capable racer that suffers from a rather dull selection of tracks and power-ups, as well as a male-oriented set of playable characters (girls are, largely, left with just Amy Rose - though there are two unlockable females).

Good for a bit of single-player kart fun or split-screen co-op, but not for much else.

It's an ok port

Few things you need to know. First, no rebindable key's option, I'm not sure what it does with the game pad; second, no video options, I'm guessing it has a video decting system to automatically adjust to the systems spec's; thirdly, no online multiplayer.

If you can overlook these problems, it's rather good. The driving is really responsive with keyboard, and there is splitscreen. I rather think the console for the time is better, but give it a few years and it will be in the same place as the PC version.

This game is fun-tastic! If you like kart games and you're a Sega fan, this one is for you. Even if you're not familiar with Sega characters, you'll love this game.

The speed sensation is much better than in other games in the same genre, not just in the racing part, but if you fall from the track, you'll recover almost instantly. The drifting ability is also much easier to pull than in other games, where it becomes almost impossible and you WILL feel the speed boost.

The great array of abilities (including exclusive ones for every character!) and different types of vehicles makes this a game where every playable character actually feels different, unlike other games, where there's a minimal difference, if any.

The graphics are beautiful too, with smooth and colorful models and backgrounds and fantastic animations.

The control's response is magnific too (with the joystick, at least, I don't play racing games with the keyboard); you'll become good at the game in no time.

My only complaint is that it could have used more characters from other Sega games, since it has too many Sonic characters.

There are dozens of games in this particular genre out there. Ignore them and get this one, you won't regret it.
