Personally I find this quite difficult to get started on, this game has so many different ways to control the most basic function.

It is also quite difficult to learn what these large array of functions do and how it effects the country you control.

The Supreme ruler wiki is a great resource and this game is neigh impossible to play without.

I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys tactics, planning, diplomacy and furthering your own countries goals and the goals you decide yourself.

The nearest non-Supreme ruler comparison would be the Europa Universallis series. It is much like Europa Universallis but much more complex and difficult.

A good game. It's a pretty big game and you'll be able to play it for long periods of time. I still play it sometimes.

Choose a country with enough resources to begin with. This way you can earn enough money to build up you country (army). Also try to lower the taxes. Also a large country does make things a little easier. If you invade a country be prepaired to get invaded yourself. So don't forget to spraid some of your forces around. Buy technology from other countries (USA or Russia). Reseach takes a very long time.

The game is alright. It is very in depth almost to a fault but it can work if you have enough patience. The AI is dumb and the turns become very slow after a little while.

While Supreme Ruler 2020 does have a very high learning curve, it is well worth it for those of us who like real strategy games. The best way to learn the game is by playing. You will get frustrated as you try to figure out what everything is and how it all works.

Unlike many games, everything in this game is interconnected. Want to build a tank? You need to build a fabrication facility, which requires industrial goods. You can either buy those from other nations or build them yourself. If you build them yourself, you'll need power, oil, and money (among other things). In short, everything ties into everything else.

If you stick with it and just keep practicing, you will figure it out eventually. That in itself is a rewarding experience. I can think of no other game on the market that does a better job of simulating what it's like to run a country/region.

Good luck!

As with most "management" style games, there's a lot to do. But if you're looking for a longer, more "epic" game session, plan on the vanilla tedium that plagues an overwhelming majority of these types of games. The shorter scenarios are where the fun is to be had if you're looking for a quick fix.

As is my norm, after getting acquainted with the mechanics of the interface and the engine itself, I set to modding. The game is fairly easy to mod, with a few catches in how to rebuild the cache files to take advantage of this (takes a bit). There is plenty there to entertain yourself with.

Insofar as passive enjoyment goes, it's on par with Superpower 2 (which I also enjoyed, until it consistently went "belly up" after several decades of play, every time). AI administrators will pretty much handle the finite stuff, but they're not very smart, no matter how much you toy around with the difficulty settings.

Speaking of A.I. It's just plain dumb, no candy-coating it. It's effective at being an annoyance where warfare is concerned, ultimately relying on the overwhelming numbers strategy. It doesn't use nukes (that I've yet to see). Once you get the diplomacy going, it gathers momentum like an avalanche and after a slow start you can soon be allies with the whole world and live without fear of attack. And if you decide to go on the offensive, some pause-order-unpause cycles, coupled with a common knowledge of units available, will put you in a position to mop up the world with the A.I.'s low IQ.

A fun game still, but I suspect only for those of us who follow these types of games. And unlike the other (SP2), this one doesn't crash after hours and hours of game time. (My current game is several decades along, with me manipulating A.I. nations to see if I can get them consolidated together & built up before I break out WWIII on them...for some real challenge). Patience is always a virtue with management games, and if you're looking for something exciting to satisfy your fixations upon, you might want to go find a simulator or shooter.

Stable & replayable. Moddable. Not all that stimulating (but it's a management game).

My only major issue? A.I. is a push-over. You can tell it relies on standardized, static algorithmns and logic loops. It's that predictable.

It's a really addictive game which you play as one of nations in 2020. You can choose one of 3 campaign and the shattered world scenerio is really interesting. All the world is divided to many countries like east germany west germany. The gameplay is nice and It's a lor different from Hoi3 or Eu3. The diplomacy is good too.The production and researchs are very good. The units are from real units like t90 tank. The problems in the world are happening in the world. It's a sweet game that strategy fans will like

This is perhaps one of the most all-encompassing games I've player- but it's for that purpose that it becomes nearly unplayable in the short term. If you only have 20 minutes or so at a time to play this game- DO NOT BUY IT! However, if you can stay up all night, I reccomend it, as the this game is incredibly entertaining when you get the hang of it.

This is an excellent game that gives you a true glimpse into current and future military technology. From protecting your own country to launching massive assaults you can really show your skill to command forces in this game. A great blend of military technology gives the upper hand when used correctly. A great grand strategy game for those wanting more than the normal RTS action.

Lots of options in this game, but unfortunately the graphics and user interface/orders break this game for me. I can never get sea transportation to work or have any semblance of order over my units.

This game is a love-hate relationship to me. The idea of this game is truly grand - to copy-paste the modern world into a computer game. Basically all cities and even small towns of the world are in the game, more or less accurate populations, country debts, military units, other statistics. Thousands of various technologies to bury into and ability to control the economy of your country in depth. All this plus many other features in this game allow the player to play any country in the world in any way they wish. Well, this is the 'love' part.

The 'hate' part of the game is mainly the AI of other countries. While you can trade technologies, implement different military tactics and so on, the AI is very limited. It doesn't build new industrial structures, at war the AI is slow and weak. Also even though the game is very customizable, I still wish that religion, culture and law-making were also in the game. Currently it's all about economy, technology, diplomacy and war aspects of ruling a country. The game is definitely worth a buy as it is a unique experience. Thanks to BattleGoat for courage to create this great game.

As a big fan of grand strategy games, I dived in Supreme Ruler 2020 a while back and found good points, very good points and at the same time, terrible ones.

First of all, Supreme Ruler 2020 (SR2020) is a Grand Strategy game, that is, you chose among more than a hundred nations to play with and your job will be to lead that nation through the game, taking care of the economy, political and military aspects of the country, as well as dealing with your neighbouring ones.

The game is set during the near future, the year is 2020, where the world is at crisis. Shortage of oil and political instabilities are plaging the continents and, depending on the setting you play, war among countries is a common place in the scenario.

The game is difficult to grasp at first, there is a lot to do and you don't have the slightest idea of where to beggin with. But as soon as you cover the basics, the game become quite simple... more than simple, actually and quite exploitable. Diplomacy, for instance, is very flat. There are non-agression treaties, military access, you can trade products with other countries and techs, and that's where a lot of "gamey tactics" get in. Buy a tech from one country and sell it to all the others and you got yourself a very profitable tech business, and the AI will buy this tech no matter if they have a use for it or not. Buy a crappy tank tech from one country and sell it to the others, even the USA will buy it, for a low price, but it's enough to make a tiny little poor country into a economic superpower in a matter of in-game days.

The military part of the game is confusing at best. The good point is, there are a lot of weapons in this game. From M1 Abrams to T-55s and experimental chinese tanks. You've got an enormous arsenal of missiles, aircrafts, ships, special units and all that at your disposal. The bad point is... well, takes time to learn how all of that is usefull to you. The units in games are in the house of battalions, so in a major war, you got a lot of units to control manually. Try to keep trace of every single battalion you got in a front with over 300 units and you got yourself a big headache.

There is, of course, an AI that you can set to control your armies for you, but all it will do is throw your units in a big "human wave" and try to sweep your enemy into extinction, that is, if you got enough troops. If you're playing a minor country, the AI will limit itself to skirmishes. Even if you got enough to destroy your enemies, you'll only see a couple of your battalions advancing deep into enemy territory, being encircled and destroyed, while the rest of your army is sitting idle in your cities.

Aside from that, the game got a good economical system. There are a lot of products to manufacture and sell to the other countries. Military units needs special industrialized goods so you have to develop your country before you arm yourself (if playing a minor one) and the game keeps it simple. So you can take a minor, very minor country, industrialize it and then arm yourself to the teeth and begin a world conquering campaign, pretty unrealistic, but very funny to play, if you got the patience and time for it.

Summing it all, SR2020 is a good game that could be great. If you're willing to overlook the military micromanegement nightmare that it involves, simplistic diplomacy and dumb AI, you'll find a very enjoyable game, well worth its 10$.

Quite good game,

for the military aspect, conquering directly villages or factories on the map is a great thing, but it becomes unmanageable when controlling a huge territory and declaring war to several neighbours, I found it hard to control the naval transport of troops.

The diplomacy aspect is for me too superficial, it's a good point beeing part of the UN, and declaring war to too much countries means that you get rid off the UN, but there's anything you can do to get back or to improve the relations... the best you can do is to sign bilateral traities.

And also you cannot decrease Casus Belli on you, or hardly a country in war with you accept to sign a peace traity, this means:

when you get involve in a war, or you annex the ennemy or you get annex by him...

Last, economy and research:

it's quite challenging at the beginning to get your economy in positive, but after one or two years, starting earning money, allow you to open 20 reaserch site, and so finish all the available tecnologies in less than 10 years (there are 250-300 available). It's realist that a country who invest and open many reaserch sites gives to that country an advantage... but... I think in this case is too unbalanced.

So, it's a good game, but I really think that a game like this can be much much better with little modifications.

I became interested in this game after trying another political simulater, which turned out to be nearly impossible to do anything in. I wanted to find a game that was on the balance of realism, but still allowing you to actually enjoy the game without every citizen of your country going on strike and burning your cities to the ground. This is definately a good comprimise, allowing you plenty of govenatorial control, while still allowing you to have fun. I will say it does require some micro-managing, which I don't mind, but if you do then I would pass.

This game is best of a new kind of strategy, this is a new kind of game, i only play 2 games more like this and it is very entertaining. In this game you have to manage your own country, but not the simply things like army and two more things like other games, no, in this game you control everything you can imagine (buldings, politics, economics, laws, comerce...), is like the real life. Buy it!

Battlegoat strived to perfect this gem with the release of the Gold version and it is my personal opinion that they achieved their goals.

Sure the game has its limitations, mainly in that it still is before its time in processing power. However the changes to the AI and the increase in playability by adding Games for Windows support, amongst other things, has ensured that this once rough gem has been thoroughly polished.

Overall I would give this game a 7/10.

The scale of this game is very impressive with many countries and lots of ocean represented. The game itself is very detailed with mainly with 6 categories: production, research, finance, diplomacy, operations(espionage), military. Each category has its own minister to "help" you but unless you want your country at the control of idiots I lock most of their actions. It can be a challenge to balance everything perfectly, but thats part of the fun.

The tech tree and units are part of what makes the game so playable for me. Researching new technologies and units to take over countries faster and faster. Each regions/country has its own unique units (ex. Israel, South Korea, etc.). The researching of technologies is very good in the game as well as units, unfortunately the units are a little bland. Basically a lot of fodder, you only need to research the most current strongest tank, infantry, etc.

The the diplomacy is average. The amount of countries is very cool, and in one scenarios you can even play parts of Europe, China, Russia, the US, or Canada; England, Southern China, Moscow, the 50 states, Ontario, etc. However the UN in the game is a lame duck not really doing anything to help the game along, just kicking you out if you declare war without reason. You cant get back in even if you get your approval back up.

My biggest beef with this game is the AI, I can conquer the world in about a week only because its so big, the AI is not really there. Most units are around cities and basically most of the killing you will do is killing city garrisons(annoying buggers). The AI's way of fighting is send en-masse any tank, infantry, artillery, anti-tank. It doesn't use aircraft well at all, nor naval units. And preparing for a sea invasion, haha wont happen. Once you kill the units its just takes time to capture cities and stuff. A note tho, starting proxy wars is easy and fun, normally I sell all my old units(which are way better than the AI's units anyway) to another country. In a few months you will see most of your units on the line taking over an enemy, haha.

Its a nice thing to do because the time in this game can go really slow, if your not at war. Just sitting and waiting for stuff to research, or for production to build.

3 more beefs. #1: the graphics is a little 1990's. I can understand that its a big world and there are many units but at least make it not so 2D. #2: the country loyalty system. Each country or state has its loyalty which is always at 100% and never changes. With you conquer a country for instance its not loyal to you so the vision and production(2/3) is reduced compared to your own loyal country. Lloyalty never changes basically so conquering the world is sorta a handicap, with this reduced vision and priducion for the rest of the game. #3 road and rail, you are unable to destroy roads or rails that have been built. They cost maintenance and

This is an interesting strategy game focused on the near future. You are able to play with any country (including almost all of today's countries) in a "realistic" campaign, or chose to play with countries like California in other scenarios. The map is based on real world images, so it's as beautiful as our world - without the clouds obviously - however if you zoom in a lot you'll find that it could have more resolution, although it's completely understandable why it doesn't have. This is a hex based game but the real time gameplay and the smooth movement of units , as well as the map, hide that - you'll only figure out with the infrastructure building.

This game is complex and will require time to learn, you can research technologies and units, get resources as you can find them in your territory (e.g. Persian Gulf countries have lots of oil to explore), engage in several diplomatic actions with other countries and of course, war. This game has a HUGE pool of land, sea, air and missile units (including almost all, if not all, real world units), having different status and abilities, giving you lots of freedom to build your armed forces.

The biggest problem in my opinion is the speed - I warn you this game, even in the fastest speed, is slow. It's understandable as everyday it calculates new prices for the products to be sold, etc, but still I find it too much. However, if you are a patient guy, you'll find this an interesting game to try out.
