A great mix of both the classic and modern style of Sonic game play. Sonic Generations is a great but majorly underrated game that more people need to play.

A decent game but the only fun parts of the game are the "classic sonic" parts, (ie. Act 1 of each stage). The modern Sonic "mach" stages are clunky to control at best, and down-right unfair at worst (eg. enemies hidden around corners without enough time to react). Worthwhile if you're a die-hard Sonic fan. Otherwise recommend you try before you buy on this one.

Good game, reminds me of good ol' sonic games on Sega console.

Problem with the controller support - glitchy and your char will dash to the left endlessly. No official fix so far, but you can find temporary fix to make the game playable at least.

3 stars out of 5 because of that.

Sonic - a fast blue hedgehog who can jump, hit and perform crazy stunts!

I really loved all previous sonic games and that's why i bought this one.

I love this game because it gives you another fresh gameplay mode which is the third person camera view, which allows you to feel the action better, and also have the classic sidescrolling mode, which is brought here perfectly. This game is awesome! :D

Sonic Generations is a wonderful nostalgic platformer.

The game is divided into two types of levels : old sonic levels(90's Sega) and new sonic levels(2000's). All levels are lots of fun, very fast paced and filled with alternate paths, shortcuts and secrets.

The new sonic levels are a bit more difficult but they pay off by showcasing some awesome setpieces such us running up a giant spiral as it's crumbling under your feet or desperately skating down a city street while a giant truck of death wreaks everything in its path to get to you. Most levels are heavily inspired by levels in previous sonic games but they always have a new twist as well.

Sonic can be customized with different perks you purchase with points gained upon completing levels and challanges. You can store multiple skill sets and then choose from them depending on what levels you'll facing and it's a nice, if somewhat tacked on, feature.

There is plenty of value for a platformer as the game should clock in at a minimum of 6 hours if you go straight through the story and can get as much as 10-12 hours if you do optional challanges(which reward you with artwork, soundtracks and optional skills) or replay some of your favorite levels and at least 20 hours if you're going for the 100%.

Being a big fan of sonic games since the first sonic on the megadrive, its sad to say that many recent 2d sonic games havn't quite hit the mark, yes they've been good, but just don't top the classic, thankfully sonic generations have done the games proud, with sonic adventure feel and classic sonic feel with plenty of polish on top its certainly, worthy of your collection. So don't give up hope after playing sonic the hedgehog 4, just forget that ever happened and get this!

Sonic Generations reinvigorates the franchise

By Masterdebator posted 9th March

I was a huge Sonic fan since the first game on Sega Genesis. Sadly, after the death of the Dreamcast, I completely lost interest in the franchise. Sonic Generations was the first game I was legitimately interested in since then. When I finally got my hands on it, I just started to smile because Sonic was back!

This game has really well designed gameplay, an amazing soundtrack with a lot of remixes from pretty much every Sonic title, lots of nostalgia and just the right sense of speed you would expect from a Sonic platformer. I really like the mash up of classic 2D Gameplay and the newer 3D Sonic Adventure style. The graphics are bright, colorful and very smooth, especially on PC. All the remixed levels and boss encounters are fun to play and are often enhanced from their original versions (like the Silver battle from Sonic 06).

The biggest disappointment has to be the lackluster storyline. The cutscenes are not particular thrilling and are merely treated as an afterthought. The overworld is really just a glorified level select screen. I would have liked some of the CGI magic of Unleashed or the humor of Colors (except for the last video with Eggman. That was hilarious!).

Overall, I think this is an extremely enjoyable game, not just for Sonic fans, and I hope it marks a new era of good Blue Blur outings.

Culling levels from Sonic's past adventures, as well as introducing a few of its own, Sonic Generations marks Sonic's return to form. Blast through classic worlds re-done in gorgeous 3D in either "Classic" 2D Sonic mode, or play them in a third-person mode with sonic gaining modern moves like the homing shot etc. Sonic Generations is a fast and very entertaining blast from the past that should delight Sonic and platforming fans alike.

A must for Sonic Fans

I am loving this Sonic game. I love all the classic sonic games, and I sure am glad I purchased this one.

Sonic Generations gives Sonic another chance showing us he can still be relevant and make an awesome game. I'm happy they listened to the fans on this one, they kept true to the classic sonic and I'm very impressed with how awesome and fun the new Sonic is as well.

This is a beautifully polished game, with amazing 3D worlds even in the side scrolling classic sonic mode and epic boss battles. I got to go back and collect all the Chaos Emeralds and try this game with Super Sonic!

After many years of awful sonic games with nothing but contrived gimmick, after gimmick, have we finally gotten a sonic game that takes us back to the good 'ol days of both Sonic Adventure and the original games?

Yes, and they've done it in style!

Going back through time to some of the older games and levels, both Modern (SA, SA2, 2006) Sonic and Classic Sonic must replay their old levels to rescue their friends from an unknown evil!

Whilst the game initially sounded, to me at least, like a re-hash of the older games marketed as something new, I couldn't have been more wrong. Whilst we do see the return of Green Hill Zone, City Escape and other fan favourites, they're not only revamped with modern graphics and added features and changes, they're also now playable as both Modern and Classic sonic, so whether your vice be Speed or Platforming, you're going to have a great time here.

It's not just the levels, however, that have been revamped. The music too has been re-recorded or re-mastered with 2 fantastic variations!

The controls are nice and fluid... if you're using a game pad. With Mouse and Keyboard, the game is just terrible. I can't even explain why it's so bad... maybe it's just the awkward positioning of some of the buttons or lack of analogue controls, who knows, just take my word for it. Don't buy this game if you don't have a control pad plugged in.

One of the best of recent Sonic games. Worth it for any Sonic fan, and fans of platformers too. The bosses may be a bit weak, but a good amount of bonus missions, well designed stages, eye-catchng graphics, and awesome remixes, plus fan service for fans of all ages.

The best Sonic game to come out in a long time for a non-portable system. Sonic Generations pays homage to all the games in the fastest hedgehog's history. A very enjoyable trip down memory lane for fans and haters of the Blue Blur alike.

Sonic generations will satisfy both the modern sonic players and the classic sonic players, the levels for both sonics are well designed and the older levels will hit the nostalgia button for those that played classic sonic.

It will also appease to both the casual crowd as every level is easily completable if you're not going for everything and the hardcore crowd with it's time attack mechanics and the sheer amount of challenges to do, be it gathering red rings or the actual challenges that are in each Act.

The game will fault in the sense that you actually have lives when doing a level, this will make some levels very frustrating to fully finish because you lose a life every time you start over as well as when you die, and the decision to have this is strange as when you're doing challenge level you don't actually have lives to account for.

Physics in this game are spot on, but the controls will make you screw up from time to time even if you're a skilled sonic player, but the controls are in no way hard to master.

The game is a good buy, but be aware that people have experienced lag spikes and the game has a tendency to crash a lot.

Awesome game. It was able to join the style of the classical Sonic games with good graphics, plus the ultra fast stages of the modern Sonic games.

As someone who played the original Sonic games in the Sega Genesis, to play the acts with the classical Sonic gave me a nostalgic feeling. The music, the stages, all is great in this game.

Sonic is back!

This is probably the best sonic game in decades. It combines classic sonic sidescrolling gameplay with the best parts of the 3D releses that came out over the last years.

Most of these had some crippling flaw, that dragged the whole game dwon, but this one is just fun all around.

It's fast and it's really beautiful.

If you're looking for an intense, graphically stunning platformer, then this is what you're looking for. Each stage in the game has two different versions for the modern and classic sonic, which means two different playstyles, double the fun! However you must play through each version of the stage at least once to get through the game.

If you want to go on online play you need to disable the steam overlay otherwise the game will crash.

Sonic and his furry posse haven't had the best run in recent years, but the ailing hedgehog finally returns in good form for his latest outing. Sifting out most of the cruddy elements from recent games that soured longtime fans and pushed some folks away for good, the development team hits a real sweet spot with Sonic Generations. Blending the tried-and-true classic 2D Sonic gameplay of the '90s with a refined, tighter version of Sonic's recent 3D jaunts yields a nostalgia-laden experience that favors blazing speed over schlocky gimmicks. When you add high replay value and a heap of extra goodies to that winning formula, you get one of the better Sonic games in recent memory.

Heralding back to the good ol' days of Sonic, Generations is a throwback to both generations of Sonic fans - from the Genesis to the Dreamcast.

This game is intensely fun. The 2.5D segments reminiscent of old Sonic are speedy and challenging, and the full 3D homing Sonic levels are just as fun, if not a little buggy at times.

Overall, this game is a must play if you've spent any time with the blue hedgehog in your gaming past!

Happy birthday sonic! we missed you!

It's really been a long time until a great sonic game and it's great to see a sonic game that can actully be called ''good'' now. If you haven't played the old school and last gen sonic games, this game wont have the increabile effect that it will usually have. But for long time fan's this is a must buy and is a great omage to past sonic games. I just wish it wasn't as short as it is and they could have added more levels!

Great game, overall 4/5

Normally, I don't bother even paying attention to Sonic games because they've lost my favour as time went by, but I heard really good things about this one. I've been really tempted to get the game for a while now, and when I saw it go on sale, I thought I'd try it out, and I was not dissapointed.

I've only just begun to play, and I am already having an amazing time with it. It's great to see a mix between the modern and traditional sonic style games, and it feels exciting to play! The game is beautiful, and it's great to see all the characters around. It's awesome to be able to play the same level, and yet have two different perspectives depending on if you're playing classic Sonic or modern Sonic.

Sonic Generations review

By Sycoraxic98_press posted 4th March 2012

I went into Sonic Generations cautiously optimistic. Sonic Team's exemplary work on Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors handily proved that not only does Sega learn from their mistakes and improve upon what works, but also that Sonic is still a franchise that can be known for its fast-paced, bot-smashing action. Having said all of that, my expectations were blown out of the water. Sonic Generations is an absolute masterpiece in every sense of the word. Even people that have been burned by awful Sonic titles in the past and as such have made up their minds to hate Sonic forevermore must grudgingly admit that this is the most refined and entertaining Sonic game to come out in quite some time.

During the celebration of his 20th birthday (marking the real-life 20th anniversary of the Sonic series), Sonic and his friends are attacked by a cosmic, interdimensionsal monster, who kidnaps Sonic's friends and KOs the hedgehog himself. When Sonic comes to, her finds himself in a sort of limbo dimension, which echoes of his past suspended in space and time. Meanwhile, Sonic's younger alter-ego also finds himself in this side dimension and he sets out to discover the source as well.

Bizarre time-traveling plot aside, what this really is is a vehicle for driving the dual-headed gameplay. Each stage in the game is a reimagined version of stages from Sonic's past adventures. And did they ever do their homework. During the course of the game you'll find yourself in locales from everywhere from Sonic 2, to Sonic CD (my all-time favorite Sonic title, though I think this game dethrones it), to Sonic Adventure and Sonic 2006. And believe it or not, the 2006 stage doesn't suck!

As classic Sonic, you play in a traditional side view reminiscent of the Genesis adventures. Classic Sonic has the super spin dash in his arsenal, but not much else. Which is perfect, and very fitting for the gameplay style.

But before we continue on, I might as well address the question that fans of Sonic 4 must already be asking: are the physics the same as Genesis Sonic? The answer is no. Classic Sonic feels slightly weightier than he did in the Genesis version, and consequently jumps and falls a little quickly. However, the issues of being able to accelerate uphill or instantly come to a dead stop seem to have been fixed. My feeling is that the overall result is actually quite BETTER than the Genesis outings. It feels less floaty and odd, overall. And one great little bonus is that once a spin dash starts to lose forward momentum, instead of slowing to a halt as he did in the past, Sonic is now able to flip himself back onto his feet mid-roll, allowing him to continue moving at full speed on foot. This really helps add to the pacing of the game, letting you move quickly and smoothly.

But Classic Sonic comprises only half of the game. When playing as Modern Sonic, every level takes on a whole new perspective, totally reminiscent of the gameplay featured in Sonic Colors. All of the trademark abilities in Modern Sonic's moveset are present and accounted for, allowing him to perform homing attacks, light-speed dashes, and slides as he could in his most recent 3D outing. And the level design is absolutely top-notch. There are lots of branching paths for both Sonics' versions of the levels, allowing for exploration and variety, and I almost never experienced deaths which felt unavoidable or glitchy (the hallmark of Sonic 2006). The stages are constructed so that you can blaze through at top speeds and still be able to react to things within a reasonable amount of time. And though I admit there have been a few times where a homing attack misfired or I accidentally charged into a pit that was very hard to see, overall I never felt cheated out of anything when I died, knowing it was usually my own fault, and driving me to improve.

The difficulty is rather balanced on this game. Which is to say, considerably more challenging than Sonic 4, yet not quite as unforgiving as the Genesis titles. And thankfully, the game gives you infinite continues and doesn't punish you too harshly for dying.

Upon beating a stage as both Sonics, one of Sonic's friends is restored to life (yes, yes, I know; but hear me out on this), and several bonus challenges for the stage are unlocked. Many of the stages also feature a special boss battle from Sonic's history. And believe me, seeing the all-or-nothing race between Sonic and Metal Sonic in the apocalyptic ruins that were once Stardust Speedway is as thrilling in this game is it was then. Perhaps more so.

(On that note, please allow me a brief tangent in which I commend Sega for including tracks from both the American and Japanese versions of Sonic CD, which sported completely unique soundtracks from one another. Both soundtracks were amazing, and the modern-day re-imagining of them is very impressive.)

So, there are several bonus challenges to each stage, and completing each of them gives you a special prize - either a piece of artwork or a music track from a previous Sonic game. The artwork is actually quite interesting, showing conceptual art for various stages (original and remade), as well as characters. The music is an even more impressive feature, as this game allows you to replace the track of any level with a track of your choice. You can even do battle against the final boss to the legendary (though sadly abridged) Sonic Boom. Now that's intense.

So, yes. Sonic's friends. Yes, they're here. Yes, they're as silly as ever. But... hey. They aren't playable in this game, nor do they fill any major role. And I for one think it's refreshing to see a company giving nods to ALL aspects of its past rather than sweeping the not-as-good stuff completely under the carpet.

And really that's what summarizes Sonic Generations in a nutshell: this is Sonic's life. As a matter of fact, Sonic is, in a lot of ways, a well-adjusted adult now. He started off as a precocious child with lots of potential and a bright future. He had a few stumbling blocks and outright embarrassments during his teen years, as teens often do. And now he's looking back on those times with the same amused retrospect as many adults look at their past exploits. There are even references to his past that might come as rather unexpected. In the opening cutscene, Sonic is seen enjoying a chili dog; a convention that was seen in virtually every American Sonic cartoon and comic, yet had never been mentioned in the Japanese canon until now. There's even an oblique reference to a debate about a certain character's name. I won't mention more than that, as the scene is funny enough on its own.

What is Sonic Generations, really? Is it a look at Sonic's past? Absolutely. But what I see in Sonic Generations is what I saw when I first locked on Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles for the first time: boundless potential. Sonic Generations is another step into Sonic's future. A game that, even as it looks back upon past exploits, continues to work on improving them and making strides in the series as a whole.

For Sonic fans, this is a must-buy. For fans of platformers and fast-paced action games, this is also a must-buy. For gamers looking for a game with lots of side challenges and unlockable content... well, you get the idea. This game is perfection. It is everything a Sonic game should be, and manages to combine nostalgia with innovation, which is a miracle in and of itself. This game takes an extremely in-depth look at Sonic's past, and playing it makes me look forward to Sonic's (hopefully) wonderful future.

This game is for people who like platformers, sonic, classic gaming. The game features many stages from many sonic games. So you can experience your favorite stages in updated graphics. Very good game. I shall review some key points here:

Gameplay: Play as modern sonic games ala Sonic Adventure 2 style or so. Or you can play classic Sega Genesis style. Which I think it's better. There are tons of things to unlock such as pictures, music etc.

Sound: Classic tunes from Sonic games but updated. They sound great.

Graphics: They look awesome and very detailed.

I can remember a very young version of myself, maybe 7 years old, playing Arcade Sonic The Hedgehog. Since then I have played most games and I can safely assure you this is a perfect 20 year anniversary tribute to our childhood blue hero. If you are like my young 12 years old cousin and have only played his 3D games: this game is for you also.

SEGA and Team Sonic managed to mix the old 2D with his new 3D style making this awesome fun game to appease all fans alike. It's fast paced. It's fun. It's challenging. So much replayability it's unbelievable. You gonna find yourself playing over and over to beat your own time. Or maybe your ring count. Or maybe just win a race against Tails. It's worth every dollar.
