Shadowgrounds

Rating: 3.9 (71 votes cast)

Shadowgrounds is an epic sci-fi shooter that blends addictive old-school action and modern technology into one big, nasty alien-battling carnage festival. The game is played from a top-down perspective that gives you a better view of the battlefield and allows for different and unique combat tactics.

Upgrade those Weapons!
Use a devastating arsenal of high-tech weaponry to dispose of the alien threat. Each weapon has multiple upgrades that maximize the carnage. Unleash the flames of the Flamethrower's Fuel Trap, cause mayhem with the Grenade Launcher's Poison Grenades, slice and dice aliens with the Laser Rifle's Pinpoint Laser - and many more!

What lurks in the shadows!
Shadowgrounds uses cutting-edge realistic lighting and glow technology to light up the battlefield and create detailed shadows producing an atmosphere of fear. But the lighting and your flashlight also affect some aliens' behavior – take advantage of that and turn the tide of the struggle by using your flashlight effectively.

Destructable Environment!
What good are weapons and explosive special effects if you can't wreak havoc on the environment? Shadowgrounds lets you go all out - glass shatters, ground shakes, trees fall, crates explode and furniture is blown to smithereens. Use your environment to your advantage and survive the alien onslaught.

They’re big and nasty!
Shadowgrounds’ old-school action brings back the boss battles - big, brutal monsters are waiting for you. Prepare to face many different bosses who will do anything to stop your journey. They are nasty, blood-thirsty beasts, but don’t give in to fear - remember to use the environment and the lighting to your advantage!

Great isometric shooter. The gameplay is similar to alien breed or alien shooter, and is very functional. Major aspects of the genre are here: hordes of alien monsters, tons of ammo, and tight controls. The story is rather thin, but there's enough to keep it interesting, and the cut scenes are all pretty well voiced, no major complaints there.

For the sale price I'd recommend the game, you'll definitely get your money's worth!

This game is similar to Alien Swarm - a free game which is published last year, and may be Alien Shooter series ( same top down shooter). When i play this game, i notice Alien Swarm learned much from it (weapons: gun sentry, flamethrower,...; graphics style). Gameplay is quite good, graphics is not impressive, sounds is bad (i really hate voice acting).

At last, this game is worthy when it is on sale.

I just finished the sequel and I liked it so I immediately bought this one after finishing the sequel (Shadowgrounds Survivor) As expected, it is great as well. Although I miss new features that they added on the sequel, still this game is well done! In fact, I think I like the story of this prequel more than the sequel.

For the graphics side, unlike the sequel which can run at a resolution of 1920x1080, this one runs only up to a maximum resolution of 1600x1200, but its ok, it is expected from an old game. But even though I'm running on a much lower resolution, the graphics is still great!

For the sounds, I'm surprised that the menu offers a selection of Multi-channel 5.1 unlike the sequel which only shows 'Stereo' on the selection. But I think the sequel, although I didn't hear sound on my rear speakers, seems to have used the center channel. As for this prequel, looks like its the same, I don't hear sound from my rear speakers but the center channel seems to be working on dialogues. For me, putting the dialogue on the center speaker is very important since my speakers are really placed around me, if the voice are not placed in the center speaker, the dialogue would sound weird, and sometimes it is hard to understand the dialogue if the voice channels are scattered around you, so its really great that they did an extra effort in putting the dialogue channel where it really belongs.

Overall, I'm really happy with this game, I ranked it 5 over 5 and I wish they could create more of these title. Its great that they have this sort of 'mod' which allows you to make your own levels, I haven't tried it but its a good invitation for game replayability.

This game is a lot of fun. There is actually some strategy to playing instead of just a "run and gun" game. The story so far has been interesting and I kind of have the feeling of playing the "Aliens" game with the dark settings and strange creatures popping out all over the place. It has kept me entertained for hours.
