GAME SUMMARY

Strength & Honour 2

Rating: 3.1 (22 votes cast)

Strength & Honour 2 is an empire building turn-based and real-time battle strategy war game that is set in the ancient world. The game allows the player to take the seat of an ancient ruler. They have eight civilizations to choose from with over 25 nations from Rome, Carthage, Egypt, Persia and the Gauls in the West to China, the Huns and Maurya in the East. Rather than kill monsters and find treasure, Strength & Honour 2 takes the player back in history to a time when empires were built not just through wars and a life of the sword, but the player must face the real obstacle of ruling a nation; maintaining peace and unity within the empire.

Building an empire is one thing, but sustaining one is a whole other matter. As the player builds up the empire’s foundation through sword and might and expands across the world, the internal problems of running an empire start surfacing and requires more attention from the player. Local governors may demand more of their fair share of the wealth and land in the empire, the expedition marshal may overshadow the ruler’s popularity and became more of a threat to the ruler than foreign enemies or generals may start to form political parties that begin to dictate the direction of the player's commands and so on.

Strength & Honour 2 shows the player the trials and tribulations on the road to creating a truly successful empire.

Battle Mode

Battle Mode allows the player to organize and control their army and engage an opposing army in battle. They can enter this mode when they engage with an enemy army or when the player attacks a city or an enemy army attacks one of the player's cities in World Mode. The player will be prompted to personally lead their troops into battle or allow the computer to decide a winner. If the player chooses to lead their army, then the will enter Battle Mode which gives the player the power to set attack formations and strategize an attack pattern that will allow the player to beat their opponent even if the player's troops are outnumbered.

Using a 3-D terrain system the battles are in real-time and the cities and terrain in battle are both vivid and realistic with backgrounds from all over the known world. Weather patterns, the time of attack and the morale of troops all have an impact on the outcome of the battle and make for battles that are always interesting and surprising.

Facilities

In Strength & Honour 2, the facilities that a player can build in their cities are very important to maintaining a successful empire. Depending on the personalities and desires of the player's subjects, different types of buildings will need to be built to maintain a high level of happiness. If the player fails to satisfy the desires of their generals then a city may revolt and attempt to break away from the player's nation. Key facilities include: Farms, Courthouses, Schools, Barracks and Marketplaces.

Strength & Honour 2 review

I really wish I could like this title, but at this time it is the only GG purchase I regret. Strategicly, it plays and feels very much like an older Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but with a fraction of the polish. The UI isn't so much out of date, as just frustrating, with little attention paid to ease-of-use.

The Real time battles add something a bit different to the mix, but these, too, are very rough around the edges, and just don't compare to titles in the Total War series or even King Arthur. Battlefields are tiny, with almost no room to position your men for flank attacks, troop control is sluggish and awkward, and judging the performance of your troops mid-fight is difficult.

Balance was anouther issue. Some nations are designed from the ground up to be successful, such as Rome, while other more barbaric nations serve more as buffers between greater powers. As there are no independant, or neutral, cities to conquer, your only means of expansion is through war. As Rome, this is no problem. You can anger the whole of Europe and still succeed. As a weaker nation, your economy and military are so very far behind that the average player wont make it past the early game.

All-in-all, I really wanted to like this title. I appreciate a good strategy game, and graphics are a minor consideration, but Strength & Honour 2 was too rough, too imbalanced, and it felt too much late a poorly implemented clone of Romance for the Three Kingdoms. It simply is not worth the asking price of $35.

Instead, I suggest looking at these:

Romance of the Three Kingdoms series. This is the game S&H 2 mimics. RotTK does it with a much more intuitive interface, and infinitly more polish.

Total War series. While the strategic game is rather simplified, the real-time battles are the best around, and the entire game is well made.

Europa Universalis series. Nothing out the matches the sheer strategic depth of these titles. Nothing even comes close.

My first GG review: If you're more of an intellectual wargamer than a button-masher, this game is absolutely Great! It's an intelligent, turn-based, empire building, strategy game first. The real-time battles are actually an option (battles can be computer run, like the Empire series) to add another, expanded, layer to this very immersive, in-depth, highly deep and detailed opportunity for ancient world control. The more you dig into it, the more intricate it becomes. I have found it extremely tough (good AI), but very rewarding. Will definitely get the synapses firing!

this game is clunky, bad looking and has a terrible interface. the battles are awful looking atleast compeard to games like rome and even shogun total war. dont get this one its a waste of money and space on your computer atleast at this price.
