Space Hack

Rating: 3.2 (40 votes cast)

Monstrous overpopulation of Earth has forced its government to undertake drastic measures. Since there was no chance for voluntary migrations to distant colonies (life out there was primitive compared to Earth), a new, restrictive law was established to force people off the planet.

Men, women and children were transported in large colony ships that usually consisted of one small steering unit and a dozen or so huge biospheres. The latter were like whole autonomous lands, each one with their own ground, atmosphere and even artificial sun. A piece of Earth in a box! This way a biosphere could be dropped on virtually any planet and provide a home for the settlers until they manage to bring their foreign environment under control.

Maximus XV was one of these transport ships. Colonists lived inside biospheres and had no idea of where they are going to end up. They were given basic equipment that could be of used when colonizing a new land. No one suspected that they'd be better off with weapons...

The colony ship, Maximus XV was on course. This was supposed to be an uneventful trip. No one on board expected to find the most dangerous predator of space; the Black Nebula. The Black Nebula is a gravitational entity that sucks in everything within its grasp. It quickly swallowed Maximus XV.

The colony ship and its passengers were not the only race that was captured and trapped within the Nebula. Ships loaded with creatures of unknown species have been trapped for years. They have learned how to survive by feeding on newcomers.

They quickly attacked Maximus XV, taking over one colony biosphere after another. The passengers were caught unaware and barely put up any resistance against the merciless invaders.

The last biosphere was different. With impromptu weapons colonists managed to fight off the attack, but they were still under siege, surrounded by countless enemies. Now, the only way to get out of this alive is to get to the emergency capsule and use their powerful engines to break free from the Nebula. But the capsule is at the other end of the ship and the path leads through all the biospheres, now colonized by alien creatures.

This is a one person job. Only the best of the best will have any hope. Hope has a new name – Space Hack.

Space Hack
An ex-officer of the Space Marines; strong, proud and maybe a little too hot-tempered was honorably discharged from service, but upset the wrong people and ended up ‘volunteering’ to join the colonist on Maximus XV.

He became well known and received his nick name after a daring take over of a pirate ship in a spaceport of Mars. He walked on board armed with nothing but a machete and a set of sideburns that would make Elvis jealous. He killed 30 pirates and rescued 150 hostages. After that, people started to call him Space Hack.

Thought it would be a fun hack-n-slash to waste a few hours with. I got less gameplay than I thought I would... the gameplay is very drab. Well, everything about this game is. Weapons, abilities, tactics... I had more fun with Harbinger than this one. I'm not exactly sure what turned me off about this game so fast. Normally I'm more of a forgiving gamer but this game just wasn't fun.

From the first moment I really liked the setting and the atmosphere. I always had something for Colony & Generations Ships that go to hell. The Gfx are still ok so far. Nothing spectacular, which also means a Netbook will run this nicely.

The controls need some time to get accustomed to, though. Click to walk and Mousewheel to turn is not exactly ideal. And the worst part is, the Keyboard cannot be remapped (as far as I see). Any WHY is there a rule for this genre that you cannot walk & shoots at the same time???

But there are also some nice things in this game. One is Quicksave & -Load. And if you get bored with the soundtrack, just replace the .ogg files.

Also the RPG elements are ok and fun, but nothing to waste too much time on.

Someone said about this game: "This is as easy to pick up, as it is to put down". Personally I think, in this case, this is actually a good thing!

If you liked Diabolo but got sick of all those fantasy clones that even don´t come up with something new visually, Space Hack servs your need.

Space Hack is an interesting game. It's a shameless Diablo clone, but it's interesting because it's in the future.

There are no classes per se. No random levels, so the replay value is debatable. Your character is only defined through the statpoints you give him. However, the creators have made a good job of synergizing different traits.

For instance, strengh is needed for armor and melee damage, but it also increases ranged damage (you pull the arrow farther maybe? Doesen't make much sense for crossbows though).

Dexterity is needed for higher-end ranged weapons, but also increase attack speed and damage for every weapon class.

Endurance is health and stamina. You need health for a melee fighter, and stamina to run around for ranged characters.

Intelligence is needed for energy weapons, which seem better then ranged weapons but cost "mana". They also permit you to use "spells".

So your "mana" is energy cells, which also count as money. Seems bad that you spend money to in lieu of mana, but then again, you won't need to repair your items.

So there's quite a bit of depth in your character customization, and that's good.

The story on the other hand.. well, don't expect much of one. The translation, though not plagued by errors, still has some. The real problem is that the translation comes as akward.

There are 15 "biospheres", each containing two levels : one underground, and two "natural habitats" that go from forest to swamp, mountain, ice, volcano, and plain mechanical. There are also three races of aliens, which will change it up a little bit, but it's mostly just different skins on the same type of aliens. Every biosphere also comes with one mission that will give you a reward. They serve to break the monotony of simply slaughtering every alien.

Nevertheless, I enjoy Space Hack a lot. For fifteen dollars, it's good for people missing the feel of Diablo 1, but wanting a Sci-Fi atmosphere, better interface and acceptable graphics.
